PUBLIC OPINION > Octomom's Kids Should Be Taken Away

SodaHead Celebs 2012/04/26 13:00:00
Nadya "Octomom" Suleman has 14 kids, and her money troubles are no private matter. When she posed nude for a tabloid in December, she said it was for the money. But just how bad is she hurting? Based on a handful of photographs TMZ got a hold of recently, pretty friggin' bad. Her walls are covered in graffiti, she's got training toilets out back, the kids appear dirty and pantless, and there are even some shots of a door wedged shut by a chair. It was bad enough to get the Orange County Department of Children and Family Services on the case, so we asked the public if she should lose custody.

octomom

As much as it pains some of us to say it, those kids might need stability more than they need their mommy. The pictures are bad, and her public persona doesn't do much to quell suspicion. The pictures were reportedly taken by her hairstylist, and the Top Opinion noted, "[Am I] the only one who has a problem with her being able to afford a HAIR STYLIST while her kids live this way?" There are clearly some confused priorities in place here. On the other hand, it's tough to condone prying kids from the hands of their mother, especially when you don't know the whole story. Not everyone was willing to make the call.

No Sympathy From Young Voters

Not only did the youngest voters support taking Suleman's children away from her, but pretty much every age group under 45 was two-thirds in favor. Older voters were about 21% less likely on average, but even then it was a few points below a split decision. No demographic weighed too heavily in Suleman's favor.

Parents Get a Little Protective

Though support for removing the kids from her custody ran well into parenting age, when we separated the parents specifically we found less enthusiasm. Parents were 21% more sympathetic to Suleman. Few parents can bear to pull kids away from their parents. Those without kids were less able to put themselves in her shoes.

Drinkers Don't Trust Octomom

Interestingly enough, the voters you might presume to have the most questionable judgment were significantly more likely to throw up a red flag. Drinkers were 18% more likely to say Octomom's kids should be taken away. Smokers also leaned more toward lost custody, but only by 5%.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit our poll about Octomom. We'd love to hear from you!

Let the welfare system support her no different than any of the other welfare cases we now support as private citizens. The government wants to dictate our lives so let them pay the lady and then they can tell her when and how to raise her kids and live her life. I never heard of welfare when I was growing up now over half of the public gets food stamps and support of some kind. I certainly do not know the answer however, it seems the government does not know either.

I totally agree.. It's as if somewhere I missed class, because it's like everyone is on welfare and everyone seems to be dependent upon government these days. What happened to taking risks and figuring it out on your own.. Today, if you did figure this out and are successful, you get screwed.. What's the point, might as well be like everyone else these days and get government money.. I mean tax payer money. It's ridiculous

The government we have now wants everyone to be dependent on them. That way they can control us. Is that what you want? I certainly don't. They are making families lose their homes, lose their jobs and everything they own or ever hope to own. Did you know that our government is putting a ban on kids under 18 helping their parents on farms? There goes the food industry. We can't just give up and let it happen.

My husband was a career military that meant with all of the moves we made it cost us more money than the gov. allowed for the move. I had to work to survive we desperately wanted more than one child however, we could only afford one even that was hard. Most of the time I was alone caring for a child and working a full time job. I still do not know how we made it but, we did. Our daughter turned out to be the love of our lives and very successful that is our blessing. We had no idea the gov. would pay for our child care and food stamps that I could also have my nails and hair done at the expense of the taxpayer WOW we were really stupid to work so hard.

This is a tricky question, take the kids or not? In reality mothers have been rasing large brroods of children without a father, some have done well while others have failed. This lady needs a very high income potential to raise this brood. Personally I never understood why a lady would birth children out of wedlock, but it happens.
Afams sisters have been doing this of a longtime this is a crime and a damn shame!! Taking her children will solve nothing, she can start her family all over again. This lady needs to be put on the RED CARPET OF SHAME AND USED AS A EXAMPLE FOR OTHER LOOSE LEGGED UMARRIED LADIES. NO MORE FREE BIRTHS FOR HER.

She can't be described as a loose woman because she had all those children through A.I and a donor. When the story first broke she said she had never had sex. She was a virgin. I guess we have to find a new way to define a loose woman. Personally I don't like her having all these kids without visible support and its on the public. There must be a way for someone to give her a decent job where she can afford child care. She apparently has two college degrees. Its getting the expensive hair-do's and clothes are another story.

No matter what I might personally think of her based on the media, I couldn't judge that. I think this case should be carefully investigated. These kids need to be safe. As far as things like kids graffiti on the walls, well, if it's her home and she doesn't mind, graffiti won't harm them. As far as dirty faces, well, I don't know a kid that doesn't have a dirty face a few times a day. And the toilets out back, maybe they are going to the trash. We don't know.

Ok, I know some might question me for what I’m about to say and maybe rightly so but here it goes:

I do not agree with how she conceived here little ones, but the truth is that she gave birth to them and they are here; it’s not the children’s fault. I do feel bad for their situation and if
I had money I’d help them.

She might not deserve anything, but her children are truly innocent of her choices. I pray that they get financial help and that they are not taken away from their mother.

Lastly, I also pray that this matter wakes her up and she does the right thing for her children.

    God Bless…

According to the Newspapers out here the fact is that her parents have helped her financially to some extent. They say nothing about brothers or sisters although there may be some. But fifteen children are a lot to support. She just seems to lack common sense.

She must love them, or she would most likely put them up for adoption when she found out her plans failed. Doesn't love count in this situation? I wonder how all of you that suggested the kids be taken away from her would feel if you was down and in the same situation and the system wanted to take your kids away. You can't say that she treats them bad, because you don't really know. If I had 14 kids to care for, I think I would deserve to have my hair done once in awhile. Maybe she does need to fix things up, but love for the kids is more important. Love will bring you through anything. The kids in the picture look fine to me.

The only reason I would consider voting yes on this is because of how much welfare she is receiving for these kids and the obvious negligence of actually having the kids in the first place. If you have no job, no family helping you out, already have like 6 kids, and then go and get IVF so you have a hundred (or however many she has) more, that is some serious negligence.

Well, emotional danger is pretty important, too, but I'm inclined to agree with you.
So her house is messy... it's not like she's living in filth. Potty chairs in the back yard? Sounds smart, considering she has little ones who would be at toilet training age... probably prevents them from soiling themselves and sitting in a mess. We're awful quick to make snap judgements.

I didn't include emotional danger because that's where the scale slides the worst. Scolding children is emotional abuse. Jumping out and saying "boo" is emotional abuse. Monitoring their activities to make sure they're toeing the line is emotional abuse. Bah! I understand case workers even consider walking into a kid's room without their permission is verging on emotional abuse.

So while there is such a thing as emotional abuse, I don't think it should be considered except in very, very extreme cases.

Good point... true emotional torment is much more than any of those things. We're really quick to come down on parents now for such trivial matters.
I spent a few years working in childcare and was stunned when I was scolded for putting a child in time out (the child had her pants down and was rubbing her bottom on another child's face). What the hell are parents and caregivers supposed to do??

I was in a case where I was emotionally abused by DHS. I was very honest, they acted like I was brainwashed. That time was harsh on everyone, because not only did DHS abuse me, they brought abuse on me. I got to see the impression of my grandmother's ugly side, I empathized with her. What sad is that those were my last memories of her alive and well. After everything passed, some of my feelings towards my family putting their emotions on me kind of stuck with me for a bit.

My concern with these kids is how greedy their mom is. Unsanitary conditions, no plumbing and their mom using the money to stay "beautiful". Lack of money responsibility she has, gives the appearance of neglect.

I am two minds of this. One she did it to herself. She was hoping for a big payday and it fell short. Even defying docs to do so.

But if the kids are cared for.. more power to her.

The reason for my response to you is when I was a kid I built a toilet in my back yard in the bushes. That was my potty.. well till the parents found out.
