PUBLIC OPINION > Octomom's Kids Should Be Taken Away

SodaHead Celebs 2012/04/26 13:00:00
Nadya "Octomom" Suleman has 14 kids, and her money troubles are no private matter. When she posed nude for a tabloid in December, she said it was for the money. But just how bad is she hurting? Based on a handful of photographs TMZ got a hold of recently, pretty friggin' bad. Her walls are covered in graffiti, she's got training toilets out back, the kids appear dirty and pantless, and there are even some shots of a door wedged shut by a chair. It was bad enough to get the Orange County Department of Children and Family Services on the case, so we asked the public if she should lose custody.

octomom

As much as it pains some of us to say it, those kids might need stability more than they need their mommy. The pictures are bad, and her public persona doesn't do much to quell suspicion. The pictures were reportedly taken by her hairstylist, and the Top Opinion noted, "[Am I] the only one who has a problem with her being able to afford a HAIR STYLIST while her kids live this way?" There are clearly some confused priorities in place here. On the other hand, it's tough to condone prying kids from the hands of their mother, especially when you don't know the whole story. Not everyone was willing to make the call.

No Sympathy From Young Voters

Not only did the youngest voters support taking Suleman's children away from her, but pretty much every age group under 45 was two-thirds in favor. Older voters were about 21% less likely on average, but even then it was a few points below a split decision. No demographic weighed too heavily in Suleman's favor.

Parents Get a Little Protective

Though support for removing the kids from her custody ran well into parenting age, when we separated the parents specifically we found less enthusiasm. Parents were 21% more sympathetic to Suleman. Few parents can bear to pull kids away from their parents. Those without kids were less able to put themselves in her shoes.

Drinkers Don't Trust Octomom

Interestingly enough, the voters you might presume to have the most questionable judgment were significantly more likely to throw up a red flag. Drinkers were 18% more likely to say Octomom's kids should be taken away. Smokers also leaned more toward lost custody, but only by 5%.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit our poll about Octomom. We'd love to hear from you!

The definition of what constitutes abuse is sliding so far that soon picking one's nose in front of kids will be considered abuse worthy of State intervention!

There are definite cases in which the State needs to protect kids from their parents. But unless the kids are in physical danger, sexual danger, or their health is in jeopardy, parents should pretty much rule how their kids are raised without fear that some government agency is going to snatch the kids.

It is one thing to have a large number of children and have the ability to adequately support them and then suffer a livelihood issue like losing your job or having an unexpected illness. I do have sympathy for people in these types of situations and do think that as a civilized society it is our duty to help. This, however, is not the case here at all.

"Octomom" has seriously crossed the line and because of social welfare laws the already strained taxpayers have to foot the bill. She already had six kids before she took the bizarre detour to become artificially inseminated and have more. She has been outright irresponsible, selfish, plain reckless and single but what man would want to have anything to do with her at this point. The doctor who agreed to fertilize her should be stripped of his license and not allowed to practice anywhere in the US and Suleman should be sterilized.

Those of you who think we should not judge and who haven't walked in her shoes are idiots. No, as a taxpayer and a parent it is my right to judge this woman and what she has done. You, who believe that we should help her out, i have a proposal. We raise your taxes enough to cover Suleman's expenses and you pay for it. Don't go dragging responsible people down with the irresponsible lot.

I am not a Big Government person by any stretch. At this point guess her kids should stay put but if it becomes apparent that there is psychological and health issues then it is also societies duty to remove them from harm or neglect. Neglect is a form of abuse whether intentional or not. Judging by the many responses from clueless people here we, as a society, might be in more trouble than I thought.

My favorite author said something to the effect of, "If you aspire to be an octomom, know that you have crossed the line between uterus and clown car." Truer words have never been spoken.

Unless the kids are in danger they should be left with their mother. She really shouldn't be allowed to have more children, though. That would just be selfish and irresponsible. She shouldn't have been allowed to be artificially inseminated without proof of substantial and sustainable income either - but, since she was and this is what happened - unless the kids are in actual danger then no agency should have the right to bother her.

Shade of a China policy . Who would you have establish a rule that a woman can only be permitted to have x # of kids ? How would you have it be enforced ? Can you explain how it would be selfish ? Or irresponsible ? What buisness is it of yours anyway ? I do agree with you, if the kids are in no danger, the agencies should leave her alone.

It's selfish because she doesn't work and can't afford the children she has...she has no support..no husband..and 14 children...her mother has had enough..it's selfish to lean on your mother to the point of knocking her down! have you seen the interviews? - the government and our tax dollars are supporting her and those children because she PURPOSELY chose to be inseminated...It wasn't an accident..or a mistake..it was a purposeful decision that was seriously financialy irresponsible and emotionally irrational. Selfish at the very least. It is selfish to keep having children if you can't provide for the ones you have..That is beyond irresponsible. And, this is a special circumstance...I don't propose that the government has guidelines on how many children we can have..but I do NOT believe that an unemployed person should be ALLOWED to be artifically inseminated..as a matter of fact, I believe there should be limits placed on welfare given to people too...maybe they can pay for up to 3 children..that would stop people from having more chlldren to get more benefits...or encourage people to use protection since they have obiviously fallen on hard times..protection is less expensive than another child..And it's my opinion..not my business..I could ask you the same thing..How is it your business??? This is a site where you state your opinion..DUH?! That's the whole point???? Are you serious?

I agree, it is difficult for me to express emotion with the written word.I think it may be for others also. Misunderstanding's happen to easily. I`m far from perfect in every way. I try to project someones stance on an issue to it`s conclusion. I error and sometimes apologize. Most accept the apology. When I do, it`s sincere. And I thank you.

Before voting or judging this young mother put yourself in her shoes. All of her children are under the age of 12 and it's 14 of them, the government should be a shame of theirselves for not helping this young mother. This mother is doing everything she can to support her children,by any means necessary.Don't judge her until you have walked in her shoes, have you ever been hungry? That is one of the worth feeling in the world, her children shouldn't be taken away. Taking her children away might ended up harming the whole family, let this woman keep her children and give her the help she needs!

How about leave this woman alone. If she wants to pose nude to feed her kids so what?!? If she is a terrible house cleaner and has poor home maintenance skills, so what?!? She is prbally no different than 40-50% of the people that responded to this poll! Have you people never seen the hoarders shows on TV?

Her kids are not in any immediate danger. Her kids look healthy and developing at a normal rate. Her kids do not appear to be physically or mentally abused.

Mind your own damn business people. And leave this woman alone! She is doing the best she can with the lot she was dealt.

I am always leary when others have the opinion that someone's kids must be removed...the arrogant presumption of inherent inferiority of others is disturbing. I believe now as then that she was not altogether the brightest crayon in the box for her decisions, but do I do not quickly conclude we are to ecourage bad behavior by easing the consequences of poor decisions.

Interesting poll results. Drinkers and non parents lead the way to have the kids removed. Go crawl back in your bottle and for goodness sake, don`t reproduce. No offence intended. The drinkers won`t remember in the morning, and the childless are to busy being busy about other busy things.

Who will really be the one who suffer if these children are taken away from their mother? That's right the children! Taking them and putting them in the state hands they might be mistreated, abused, neglected and sexal abused and there's no telling what else will happened to these poor children. We know their mother "LOVE" them and have their best enterest at hand. This mother only need financial "HELP" and the government spends millions of dollars on "WAR" something we don't need! Why not take some of that money and help this woman out with her children! DO A GOOD DEED!!

    NO!

I’m sure Ms. Suleman is doing the very best she can and to me using this young woman life as a joke doesn’t say much about the human race. Nadya needs understanding not ridicule I will not argue that she did this to herself but she’s young and young people don’t think long term. But taking away her children isn’t the answer; I rather see my tax dollars helping her than hurting her and her children. Maybe the state could offer Ms. Suleman some childcare while she looks for employment or get some training? She and her family are not jokes, Nadya just needs a friend and probably a shoulder to cry on.

"Life is not the way it's supposed to be.. It's the way it is.. The way we cope with it, is what makes the difference.
