PUBLIC OPINION > Music Award Shows Are Better Than Film Award Shows

SodaHead TV 2012/02/29 23:09:01
This year's Oscars were a success, as usual, but for the first time since 1984, the ratings didn't match up to the Grammys. Some say it may have had to do with the nominees -- Grammy nominees like Adele and Lady Gaga tend to get more attention than critically acclaimed films like "The Artist" and "The Iron Lady" -- but it could have been due to any number of reasons. We thought this would be the perfect occasion to ask the public which kind of award show they prefer.

grammys oscars sodahead

It was close, just like the ratings for the Grammys and Oscars, so these results may just be a product of their time. Not a good year for movies, it would seem. Based on the comments, it seems like the main reason music award shows are getting the most love is because music in general is more popular. Plus, musicians tend to be less... opulent. They're more entertaining to watch, even if most people seem to agree that the Grammys are more of a popularity contest than a talent show. The Top Opinion read, "Think of it this way, why would SO many popular artists be in the Grammys, while in the Oscars they show more obscure films?"

Women Prefer Music Awards

The overall vote was close, but female respondents voted decidedly in favor of music shows -- which is interesting, because another recent poll found that females are more likely to go to the movies on a regular basis. Male respondents leaned toward film awards, but were still pretty split.

Age Fluctuation

The age demographic fluctuated drastically. Teens were far more likely to dig music shows, but by the time voters hit their thirties they were strongly in favor of movies. The trend reversed again in favor of music when respondents hit their fifties, then swung back up toward film for the over 60 crowd. Maybe people just go through phases. Or maybe different generations have different views on entertainment.

Music for the Unemployed

Respondents with full-time and part-time jobs were split 50-50, but unemployed voters were strongly in favor of music shows. It might be an odd place to bring up "Working Class Hero," but music does tend to be a bit more inspiring, on average, than film.

I prefer music award shows because the nominees and winners don't seem like they are as stuck on themselves as the elite Hollywood movie actors, who think they are the best thing to come along since sliced bread. Artist in the music field don't seem hell-bent to force their will on the rest of us like the so called movie stars, are always trying to do.
They should live their lives the way they want, and let us do the same, and stop buying their way in politics and taxes.

My only problem with the Grammys is they get flavor of the month acts most of the show to perform. (If people haven't bought the record yet, it's a little late to promote it. You aren't going to be nominated mid-show.)

I'll watch a Film award show way before any music award show. The music I listen to isn't ever considered, so I don't even bother most of the time. Plus I hate all of the live performances.

All award shows suck, BUT, at least actors display some form of talent, the music business these days, is one big digital, software driven joke !! ( a sad joke, not the ha ha funny kind of joke) Take away pro tools editing, and clever marketing, and a team of songwriters (mostly the guys from the band ToTo) and you've got cocktail waitresses who won a karaoke contest.

Personally I find all these award shows incredibly tedious.
Perhaps the reason for the ratings for the Oscars going down is that recent films have been a bit lackluster and no one really cares who wins.

Honestly, I don't watch neither! Especially, the "Academy Awards" ("Oscars"), "MTV Music Awards," "Grammy's," etc. All these "Award Shows" (if you could truly now call them that) have turned into a Comic former version of themselves. Politics have slowly seeped into them over the Years & "I had my fill of them." Whenever they're on, I'm either at work, watching TV (at Home), watching a DVD (at Home), or on the Computer (at Home). I've got better things to do than be "bored to Death."

I have reached ‘critical mass’ with award shows, where millionaires bestow honors on other millionaires, as stupid people are mesmerized and clapping like a bunch of seals waiting for their next anchovy; bring back the Gong Show, now there’s entertainment!

    Really?

I find music awards can be chalked up to ''who sold the most records? Let's give them an award'.

Music award shows are more entertaining with the musical performances and less talking. Film award shows are advertising 90% (possibly an exaggeration) of movies that nobody has heard of, or can't go see because it's not in wide release.
