PUBLIC OPINION > It's OK for Beauty Pageant to Disqualify Transgendered Contestant

SodaHead Celebs 2012/03/27 21:00:00
The Miss Universe Canada beauty pageant found itself in a strange situation when the organization discovered that Jenna Talackova, one of 65 finalists, was not born a woman. The 23-year-old Vancouver native was disqualified because she did not "meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form." Officials say the rules require that contestants be "naturally born females," but Talackova argues that she has considered herself a woman since the age of four and has undergone reassignment surgery. Good Morning America asked the public if Miss Universe Canada officials were discriminating when they disqualified her.

jenna talackova sodahead

Unfortunately for Talackova, the public is not on her side. However, in this case it's especially important that we pin down the reason behind the public's decision, as this is a controversial issue despite an apparent consensus. The key factor in ruling the disqualification "fair" was not the public's stance on the LGBT community, or even the public's stance on what should be allowed in such a pageant -- though both obviously influenced some voters. The deciding factor was the rule book.

We couldn't find a digital copy of the Miss Universe Canada requirements, but one official did say that the rules specifically require that each contestant be a "naturally born female." Since "female" denotes chromosomal makeup, there's really no way Talackova can evade it. Perhaps she can present an argument against the rule book for future pageants, but this year she's out of luck.

Teens Support Talackova

Even though the overall results suggest a consensus, there was little agreement in the demographics. Age, for instance, had an enormous correlation. Teens were inversely adamant about allowing Talackova to participate in the pageant, while some older age groups were nearly unanimous.

Liberals Relatively Reserved

The political spectrum is a good illustration of why the results turned out so heavily against Talackova. Not surprisingly, liberals were far more likely than conservatives to call the ruling discriminatory, but they were not nearly as decided as conservatives. While an overwhelming 92% of conservatives voted "fair," liberals were still very close to a split decision, presumably because of the rule-book argument.

Males Make a Statement

Gender mirrored the political spectrum in that men showed a strong opinion and women were relatively undecided, but the reasoning here is a little less obvious. We suspect the primary factor here is that men don't want to accidentally oggle someone who used to be a man. Even for men who are reasonably progressive, the idea might seem a bit awkward.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit Good Morning America's poll about Jenna Talackova. We'd love to hear from you!

I think the reason teens are for it is they don't really understand what goes into a sex change. You can't reproduce female organs, nor can you reproduce the male organs. You can make someone LOOK like they have female organs but A) they aren't functional, never could be and B) they will still have a Y chromosome.

"well what about women born infertile?" Do you really want to make the comparison between a man who cut off his junk and flipped his penis inside out to a woman who was born with female parts but is infertile?

This is why you had all the people in the comment section asking for us to "define male and female" as though it hasn't already been defined.

If I took a dog, chopped off it's legs and shaved it, cut its tongue to make it forked and did plastic surgery to make it look like a snake, would it be a snake or a dog?

There are things you just can't change.

She is a woman and I am a man. And you know what, I don't even have a problem calling her gorgeous. It was completely unfair for them to disqualify a gorgeous young woman from her rightful entry.

It's anyone's right to do whatever they want to their body. That being said, however, a man who FEELS like a woman can do just that and even make themselves LOOK like a woman all they want to, but in the end, he is just a man with mutilated sex organs. Sterling's comment about the dog and the snake is spot-on. The Miss America beauty pageant is for women, as clearly stated in the rules.

that is just SO bigoted! She was NEVER a man, she was never even a little boy, she was ALWAYS a little girl trapped in a boy's body, and then a woman trapped in a man's body and now she is finally free to be the WOMAN she really is and has always been in her heart, mind and soul. Is that really that hard to understand?

It is unfair to disqualifié the being for not having the propper sex part. Think about how real woman are so opinionating about look. It is the world going up à click higher on insanity. Everytime one side does not want to keep up with the job that the were made to do nature just keep going in décliné. Why would you say she is not qualify, is it because she cant have children or because she cut one part off. Heck you have twin born with share organ or two heads one body how do you define that.
Some woman think they look too much like à man they have surgery so they can make it complète, be à lesbian. It just keep getting better. It woolly keep getting more interesting. I say she is beautiful she won. Hey what is the fuss is all àbout they are competing for beauty not for who can be à good woman or good mother. Lets all woman learn how to be à lady. She look more féminin than many of these woman. More power to him or her. I am sorry just à commentaire. Le maringrin ap volé ou pa kon sak mal sak femelle.

As a woman, I'm insulted that a MANUFACTURED female would be allowed to compete in a beauty pageant for women born as women. There are other pageants for transgendered women and that's where these gender misguided people should go to compete.

Mr. Talakova, you are not a woman and never will be. Somewhere in your sad life you were traumatized into believing that you were really a girl. You're beauty is not genuine. It was falsely created using a lot of money which gives you an unfair advantage in the beauty pageant world.

It is pitiful that our society has become so politically correct that the legal powers that be want to force perversity on us as an acceptable way of living. Mr, Talakova, is misguided and it is very sad that no one early in his live tried to counsel him into accepting who he was, a boy.

Personally, I think Miss Universe has already become too artificial with all of the women having undergone some degree of cosmetic surgery. Beauty pageants should be about a woman's natural beauty and not something they bought with their Visa card. I think Jennatal can compete in beauty pageants for transgendered people but not Miss Universe. Can an unaltered woman compete in Miss Transgendered? Why should transgendered then be allowed to compete in Miss Universe but not the other way around? I think Miss Universe is for naturally born women, that is, their DNA shows at least XX and not XY. To use surgical and hormonal means of superficially changing into a woman does not change her genetic makeup so her chromosomes in the end will always be male. So no, I don't think Jennatal should be allowed to compete in Miss Universe nor would I want her or any other transgender to represent Canada as Miss Canada. And regardless of the amount of training and hormone therapy she's gone through, her behaviour and body language is very typical of a transgender.

It’s pretty sad and gross that so many people are still judgmental jerks towards others that they do not even know. Don’t worry! There are a lot of resources for you to educate yourself. Here is a brief rundown of some simple things to remember:

    1. Gender is fluid. That means that it can, and does change. It can seem like a slow change or a sudden change- or maybe it won’t change at all. It’s one of life’s mysteries! It is none of your business if someone’s gender suddenly shifts. Use the correct pronouns and move on.

    2. Gender does not mean conforming to stereotypes. A male or androgynous person can wear dresses or like cute things, and they are still male or androgynous. Someone who identifies as female does not have to like dresses or cute things, and she is still female. Accept their preferences and interests and get over it.

    3. If someone you know does not seem to fit into the norm for trans* people, it can be confusing or frustrating. If you think that your friend or acquaintance is just confused and not really the gender they identify as, if you think that they are just going through a phase, or if you believe that they only want attention, follow these simple steps to handle the situation:

Realize it is none of your business

Realize it is none of your business

Do not talk about how “obviously” fake their identity is

Use the correct pronouns and let them be happy with their life.

    4. If someone you know seems to be confused with their gender, that’s okay. Not everyone can leap out of bed and declare themselves one gender or another and be sure of it. A changing gender and identity can be confusing, and it is perfectly okay to be unsure, to question oneself, and to go back and forth.

    5. If a person does not appear to be the gender they identify as, that is also okay. An androgynous person might have a large chest or a large bulge. They are still androgynous, not a he or a she. Please respect them and use their preferred pronoun, not whatever pronoun you assume will work. Gender is not based on appearance, and you should not make assumptions on a person’s gender because of the way that they look.

    6. Finally, please remember that no one’s gender is your business but your own. Do not push yourself into someone else’s space to tell them why they are wrong to identify as the gender that they do. Identity is a very personal thing, and you are not “solving” or “fixing” the other person by refusing to use their pronouns and insisting on disrespecting them.

    Also!
    there is a difference between

    -having a penis
    -being a male
    -presenting as male

there is also a difference between

    -having a vagina
    -being female
    -presenting as female

YOU CAN BE ANY COMBINATION OF THOSE!

you can be a transman who wears dresses! that’s okay! you don’t have to bind if you don’t want to.

you can be a transwoman who has a beard! that’s great!

your genitals do not determine your gender, and your gender does not determine what you wear or how you want to be seen by others.

I think that covers the basics! Now that you have a basic understanding, please get on with your life and be a little bit more respectful to people.

That's one of the problems with society today. This guy (genetically, he's a he, no matter how he dresses or how much mutilation he's undergone) decided to lie on his app to be in a women's contest. It doesn't matter how stupid the contest is (and it is phenomenally stupid--I'd even say that to a niece of mine who was a national finalist... somewhere ;-)), lying to get in is even stupider... and completely, totally, absolutely unethical.

Unfortunately, the People that do that (like "Lucy Sparkles :3.") do that to deflect from the Real Issue that both You & I have pointed out. They scream that it's about "Beauty," "Fairness," "Discrimination," & all the other lousy, poor, & overall dumb excuses to make a coherent Argument. No! It's about (1) Lying on an Application & (2) The Rules that are set up by the "Miss Universe" Organization. If they want to have that type of Contest, simple solution. Set Up Your Own Beauty Contest. Then, You can make up "Your own Rules" to be broken. Don't break someone else's "Rule Book!" Your comment "Raved."

I praise the disqualification. There are transgendered beauty contests...it is more than able to join there. Not to mention that it is a mental disorder.

The people that think it is discrimination are apart of or for some reason support the radical LGBT crowd and you listen to their propaganda and apply logic, scientific evidence and common sense appropriately to it.

This sick taunting from radicals do this on purpose: http://www.guardian.co.uk/med...
