A heartwarming video about a 9-year-old boy named Caine went viral this week. The video tells the tale of Caine's handmade cardboard arcade, and how Nirvan Mullick, his first customer and the creator of the video, turned the arcade into a massive event. The games, made completely out of household items like cardboard boxes and plastic army men, are adorably clever; and the crowds that form for Mullick's "flash mob" are touching. We presented the video to the public and asked who wanted to play at Caine's Arcade.
Was there ever any doubt? It's a human interest story for the ages. Caine is innovative, persistent, humble, savvy, adorable -- and nine. Nine! One commenter wrote, "YES, and I'm a 30 year professional arcade and pinball game tech." Not everyone was impressed. The Arcade is lacking a DDR machine, which lost a few potential customers, and there were some respondents who felt Caine just got lucky in meeting Mullick. But if 63% of people want to play, it doesn't really matter how they found out about it. This kid is in business.
The Ladies Love It
Caine's Arcade is a hit with the ladies. They were 19% more likely to support it than men. The most likely explanation is that women were going "Awwww" through most of the video, although the Los Angeles Times article about it claims the video also makes "grown men cry."
Young at Heart
Age had an even stronger correlation than gender, and there was a very distinct line between supporters and skeptics. Support for Caine's Arcade dropped about 30% at 35 years old, and it was pretty consistent before and after. That must be the age your inner-child dies. Take note.
Without Substance
Smokers and drinkers weren't Caine's biggest fans -- especially smokers. Perhaps they were worried smoking or drinking wouldn't be allowed at the Arcade, or maybe they would just rather spend their money elsewhere. Maybe if Caine had a few brews on tap...
