PUBLIC OPINION > Disney Won't Combat Obesity With Its Junk Food Ban

SodaHead TV 2012/06/07 13:00:00
Disney is launching an initiative that will ban junk food commercials from appearing during their children's programming by 2015. They announced that all food and beverages advertised on the Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Radio Disney, and Disney.com must meet certain standards to air. We asked the public if this initiative could help fight childhood obesity.

junk food commercials

It's a nice thought, but not many people think it will make a difference. And not many people think it's something Disney should be worried about, either. The Top Opinion read, "It's the parents responsibility what their kids eat no one else's." Even those who said it could help were typically underwhelmed, saying things like, "It couldn't hurt," or, "Every little bit helps."

Reluctance on the Right

Even though Disney is a private corporation imposing its own rules on itself, conservative respondents were much less likely than any other demographic to say their junk food commercial ban will help fight obesity. It could be that they're just bothered by the fact that Disney is potentially forfeiting profits for standards set by the government, even if the government isn't enforcing it.

Smokers Are Skeptical

Smokers were also much less enthusiastic about the ban than most demographics. It must have something to do with health -- smoking, like eating junk food, is obviously unhealthy, so maybe they're sympathetic. But it's not like smokers are worried Disney will stop advertising cigarettes on Channel Disney.

Athletes Aren't Convinced

Strangely enough, the healthiest weight class (athletic) was least likely to say Disney can help fight obesity. It wasn't by much, only about 5% to 6% less than any other weight class, but we found it odd that healthier voters shrugged off Disney's shift toward health-conscious eating. Maybe they're suggesting a healthy lifestyle takes a lot more than new commercials.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit our poll about Disney's junk food commercial ban. We'd love to hear from you!

Whatever happened to parents being parents and controlling their kids or is that not allowed anymore. It's not the commercials fault that children are obese, its the fact that parents are out getting them the junk food while the kid is sitting on his bum in front of the television, computer, or whatever.

true, and the root cause of it all is today's fast paced highly technical world we live in.. People are so impatient, they want it yesterday and not now or in 30 min to an hour or so.. It is so easy to play the blame game because again no one wants to take responsibility for themselves or there children because they just don't have the time to do so and it is easier that way..

Present the facts, not your own bigoted opinions laced with your disappointment that we didn't go along with what you'd wanted or expected. A good reporter and presenter of facts is exactly that.

Anyway, it absolutely is up to the parents. To be a parent doesn't mean simply having a kid (or kids) and letting the TV and Government raise them for you, contrary to that being exactly how the majority of post-modern parents raise their kids as such by leaving themselves mostly out of it. I was raised that way in the 90's, but the difference between myself and most of my generation was that I matured very quickly and didn't sink - but swam, teaching myself and questioning EVERYTHING I heard or was told, forming MY OWN opinions. It's a dying phenomenon to be sure.

But to get back on topic here... I want you all to do something the next time you go to the grocery store, the fast food joint, or whatever other place you go to get your food. READ THE INGREDIENTS! It is NOT the "Nutrition Facts" that you need to be concerned about, that is actually the LAST thing you should consider when making decisions on the foods that you eat.

If you think that eating man-made, processed and reprocessed and chemically-laced, "artificial" (including GMO or GENETICALLY MODIFIED), hormone saturated foods is what you really need to be putting into your body, then think again. Now I am not saying that you have to only eat fruits and vegetables, raw and all day long. Not at all, but you DO need to educate yourself on exactly what it is you've been putting into your and your kid's mouths! I guarantee you that more than 70% of the things you have been eating, have absolutely NO Nutritional values whatsoever, that is to say that they have next to no, if any, vitamins, minerals, and even micro-nutrients (i.e. Chromium, a very crucial element that USED TO be provided in the human diet from whole grains and whole wheat, but is now as much as 80% depleted from our soils, and which isn't found AT ALL in processed or refined grains and wheat - it is the largest helper of INSULIN AND SUGAR functioning).

Many people think the Nutrition Facts is all that they have to pay attention too, but it really isn't. Fats are also not the enemy, believe it or not. The Mediterranean peoples eat three times higher fats than in any other peoples, but the difference is that their fats are UNSATURATED (and most of them come from EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL - not vegetable oils, not cristco, but EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL). They also consume a lot of SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES via pastas and breads, but again, the difference is that their pastas and breads are NOT made with processed flours - but with WHOLE GRAINS AND WHOLE WHEAT! More than half of anything they eat consists of FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND NUTS AND BEANS. And their primary sources of protein comes from FATTY (UNSATURATED OMEGA-3) FISH! And instead of eating high fructoise or/and corn syrup coated in refined sugars, they eat DARK CHOCOLATE OR NATURAL SUGAR CAINE (it looks like a piece bamboo, you cut it length-wise and you chew on it to release the natural sugars).

Why am I telling you how the Mediterranean people's eat? Because this is how human beings are SUPPOSED TO BE eating, by and large. This is how just about everyone on this planet USED TO EAT! That is why it is relevant, and it is only one example of how to eat for your health (and the food tastes GREAT if you take some time to learn how to prepare it!!!)

So really, all it takes to be healthy and for your body to NOT freak out on you and glob on the pounds (and try to KILL YOU) because you're not feeding it what it wants and needs (i.e. trying to put in food that is not actually food at all, because it is only chemicals and filler - you can literally think all of that boxed crap as being DOG FOOD FOR HUMANS), is to eat NATURAL FOODS!!!

If nature didn't make it, don't eat it! Bottom line. Now it is OK to 'cheat' and eat some of that commercial and fake food, but NOT ALL DAY EVERY DAY, THAT IS WHAT IS KILLING PEOPLE!

Parents, it is UP TO YOU. YOU are responsible for the health, welfare and education of your own children. STOP letting the Government, TV and society at large do YOUR job for you. Be the parent, learn when to say NO. Discipline your children, set BOUNDARIES. And good luck, parenting is not easy (never said it was, not that I am a parent but I CAN empathize). It is the toughest job in the world... even tougher to start being involved when you hadn't been before. But you have got to do it, you have got to set the example for your children whereby they can follow it.

Do not let your children end up like me, with the Metabolic Syndrome and insulin resistance, high blood pressure, racing heart, high liver enzymes (liver damage), sky-high bad cholesterol, very low good cholesterol, EXTREMELY high Triglycerides in the blood, and facing a lifetime of health problems that will eventually put me into the official Diabetes Type II, and from there, heart, liver and kidney DISEASE and finally... death. This is what I am facing and I am ONLY TWENTY-TWO YEARS OLD, ORIGINALLY DIAGNOSED AT SIXTEEN YEARS OLD - MY ATTEMPTS TO REVERSE THE UNDERLYING CONDITION, EVEN WITH RADICALLY CHANGING MY DIET AND EXERCISE REGIME HAS FAILED!!! IS THIS THE FUTURE YOU WANT TO GIVE TO YOUR CHILDREN? NO? THEN DO YOUR JOB, FOR THEIR SAKE! THEY AREN'T GOING TO MAKE THIS CHOICE FOR THEMSELVES, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO ASSERT IT FOR THEM BECAUSE YOU LOVE THEM AND DON'T WANT THEM TO WIND UP EXACTLY LIKE I DID, BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE ANYONE THERE FOR ME TO TELL ME WHAT I WAS DOING WAS GOING TO CAUSE MY VERY PREMATURE DEATH. YOU HAVE GOT TO DO IT FOR THEM!

Up to you. Hopefully I've helped someone, I sure hope I have. Good luck and good health to you and yours.

Don't know. I'm having to take meds for the blood pressure and heart rate as of last month, probably will be on cholesterol meds soon if I can't get it down. I could live to 50 (and that's a conservative estimate) but just don't know, there's a very high risk of stroke and heart attack with this thing so it's a big question mark and it largely depends on if if or whenever it progresses into the diabetes. There's a 20% margin with this where it won't reverse and I suspect I'm in that percentile because it happened when I was so young and it hasn't regressed much since changing lifestyle stuff around (cutting out most of the fake foods). This is usually reserved for those in their 40's or 50's so I might have had a genetic predisposition that these poisons exploited. They've only known about the metabolic syndrome since the 80's so not much is really known about the prognosis and such of those who simply can't get it to stop. Don't be sorry though, its people like me that are going to be the ones to cause some things to change (once others start to realize what this is doing to them too), as soon as the medical establishment stops claiming this is just because of empty calories and weight and lack of exercise... it isn't. I wasn't overweight until I started getting sick with this, perfectly healthy up until that point and very active too. Not much anymore obviously, lack of energy is one of the lovely benefits of this thing.

Jeez! I can make my own mind up....just leave me and my family alone. I'm a good parent, and I take care of my responsibities in raising my daughter. But that being said, if Disney wants to limit exposure of fast foods...leave them alone too. It's thier right. I just don't want to see government getting involved (at any level).

I don't have a problem with an influential organization like Disney wanting to do what they can to help combat obesity. If it results in even a small portion of their audience not choosing the wrong foods then that's a good thing. What can it hurt?

If you look deeper, money is at the root of almost every decision, from corporations to government. I have no proof, but I'm sure someone somewhere is "lobbying" Disney. There is no doubt in my mind that there is money to be made by this decision somehow.

I just think that it falls on the parents .. and I hate the idea of kids missing out on all junk food. It is like the promotion of nothing but educational games. While educational games can be fun .. sometimes you just want to fight a huge turtle, who kid napped your girl friend .

The WholeGrain is GMO who knows what values they decided to keep or discard when they made it genetically insect resistant raising the plant toxin levels to deadly enough levels that bugs die after ingesting it. They are able to (in cereals case) advertise it as healthy by surrounding it with fruits and juices then calling it ''part of this balanced breakfast'', when in most cases it is all the kid will get and way more than 1 serving at that. But again these are personal/parental responsibility factors like portion size and frequency of consumption resulting in sickness not the product so much... well except for the organ damage from the GMO but that's an whole other tin-foil-hat rant. p.s. warp whistles are for cheaters...! warp whistle
