He does not exist in reality - From the album "No Jacket Required" The song is addressed to someone called "Billy" whom the singer is hoping to find (and hopes Billy still has his number). Collins has said that he actually wrote most of the song during the recordings for his very first album, Face Value, Collins also states that the lyrics were improvised, and that he himself does not fully understand what they mean.

True. His main fan page should be the first place he could check. He has over 1 million fans there... many of whom I'm sure are named Billy (or William for that matter)... lol

There is no difference between a Billy and a William! UGH WOMAN! They are the same! Hopefully you're not cluing him in on his hints...he won't know what's Billy from William, from THE SAME DARN THING!
