Peter Jackson to Split ‘The Hobbit’ Into a Trilogy: Brilliant or a Blatant Sellout?

Last week, director Peter Jackson announced that the forthcoming prequel to his massively successful Lord of the Rings series would be split into three films instead of the planned two. The first movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will hit theaters on December 14, 2012. The second film, There and Back Again, will be released in December 2013. The third and final installment will come in summer 2014.

Jackson wrote on his Facebook page, “It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'“

But does The Hobbit really warrant three full-length movies? Or is this just another Hollywood attempt to squeeze as much money as possible out of a franchise? We believe it’s the latter.

To begin with, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is only 304 pages. In comparison, each of the three Lord of the Rings books was longer (together they totaled 1,241 pages) and none of them received the multiple film treatment. Jackson argues that he’ll also be drawing from related materials that appeared in the appendices of LOTR, but we’re still skeptical.

What do you think SodaHeads? Is Peter Jackson’s decision to split The Hobbit into three parts brilliant or a blatant sellout?

Stretching it into two movies I could handle because they would be able to cover more of the story. Stretching it even further to THREE movies is just being greedy !! All I can say is since they ARE doing this then they better not leave out a SINGLE sentence from the book !!

If I didn't actually see the first movie I'd say blatant sellout... but no, it was surprisingly worth every penny and for those of you wondering- yes they include everything in the book and then add some stuff which would lead one to think "hmm... fail", but the added content actually turned out to be really good and improved the depth of the story.

If PJ wants to add stuff not from the exact book of The Hobbit then he shouldnt called it The Hobbit, he should have called it PJ's Attempt At Things That Happened Before LOTR Trilogy Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. People pay for the movie to see The Hobbit not other characters in the canon. I watched The Dark Knight to see Batman fights the Joker not to see what Superman is doing at the same timeline as Batman fights Joker.

not to be picky.. but my copy of the return of the king is 277 pages, 2 towers 322 pages, the fellowship of the ring 377 so the hobbit at 304 pages is pretty close to them all.

It will be brilliant if they really cover a lot of the backstory, and at (probably) over 8 hours in total better be pretty faithful to the book... i think each of the LOTR films was around 3.5 hours on the extended versions so will be fascanating to see how they can get more than 8 hours out of this...
Not brilliant is having to wait for 2 1/2 years till ive seen them all

Anyone who is even passingly familiar with Tolkien's work knows the HUGE backstory that went into the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.

To me, the more of the story Peter Jackson tells, the better. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is my favorite trilogy ever.

I'd rather see it broken into segments rather than 2 really long films. Plus, it's Peter Jackson so I'm sure they will be well done & entertaining.

The book is not long enough for a trilogy -- perhaps a two parter, but not as a trilogy.

Wow Hollywood. Why not start with the hobbit then make LOTR.

By this Math we should have 9 LOTR movies. And ya know, i bet people would be ever pleased with that, but to make Hobbit into 3 movies, WTF!!!!

It's a brilliant sellout. There are 3 books to the Lord of the Rings and only one Hobbit. The Hobbit will be so watered down by the time he is done with it I think it will turn more people off than on. However, I'll still probably go see them.

What you don't see, is that the Hobbit told a far richer story than most people appreciate, to the point where Tolkien practically rushed through it. Three movies, each about two hours long, would just about do it justice. Don't forget that each installment of the LOTR trilogy ran for four hours. (Or at least, their Director's Cuts did.)

Most epic novels such as "The Hobbit" cannot be done justice in just 2-4 hours.

If i member,r the Hobbit was not has long has The Lord of The rings, but yet its a trilogy.
First time i read the LOTR i went half way forgot who was who started again with a pad to keep notes on who was who.
Did not do that with the Hobbit, will all the books be trilogy's,just think a bit of a overkill to make it into a trilogy.

Well, what most people fail to understand is that he's covering more material than the book. The book covers Bilbo's journey and nothing else. There were loads of other things happening in Middle Earth at the time- enough to warrant two movies. The third movie takes place *between* the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, in order to connect it back to the Middle Earth we know. He is not stretching it at all. He is simply compiling several of Tolkien's lesser-known works that have to do with the Hobbit, but are not found in the Hobbit proper.

I've read the Hobbit. Yes it isn't as long as the Lord of the rings books. But given the time of the movies, major parts of the books would have to be cut to make 1 movie. While I think two might suffice, I have no problems with three movies.

Although I list The Lord of the Rings trilogy as one of my all-time favorite movies and books, I found, at time, it to be a bit long and drawn out. I don't know what the thinking is behind dividing The Hobbit into three films (other than financial), but it seems to me that the story could be told in only one film. Partly, I don't want to wait for two years to see the conclusion. I'll probably wait until it comes out on cable.

Yes i have to agree with you, loved Lord Of The Rings book, but it was rather protracted still loved it, and the film was fantastic.
I cant see how they will make it riveting over 3 films if they just stick to the Hobbit, unless they involve the other parts of the books by Tolkien into the Hobbit.

If anyone's ever read the hobbit, it's easy to see how this story can be picked apart into 3 distinct segments. Remember that this is the LOTR prequel, so hopefully Jackson is planning on adding a lot of character content to the background of Hobbiton and the Dwarven clans.

But also, Jackson tends to shoot a LOT of content. Anyone who's seen the true extended version of LOTR on DVD saw over 2 hours of added footage that was cut from the theatre release. It was a completely different trilogy after seeing all of those edited scenes back in. And I'm hoping Jackson & others on this film project realize how much better the first series was with the extended scenes left in, and are deciding to just make 3 movies out of it instead of 2.

I'm just curious, what are this three parts? I'm going to guess, beginning to end of goblins, end of goblins to end of wood elves, end of elves to the end.

First Gandalf goes to Bilbo & introduces him to the Dwarfs, then they decide to go on the journey.

The second part is Bilbo, proving his worth to the dwarfs and almost being eaten. meeting Smeagal, & rescueing the dwarfs from King Thranduil. (I think)

The third part (without giving away the ending) is getting back to Hobbit town.

Actually, i though it was something along the lines of this: PJ is adding things that weren't in the Hobbit, but DID happen. He is also covering several of Tolkien's background works. It was mentioned briefly in the book, but there were big things happening in Middle Earth besides Bilbo's journey. They are just unknown to you unless you read some of Tolkien's short stories and background works. This extra material makes two movies. The third movie has to do with linking the Hobbit back to LotR.

I'm not certain, but I think the works you are referring to came from the 'Simillirian' which Jackson will be tying into the Hobbits. I read that book as well.

    Thanks for explaining.

hahaha please dont give away the ending... oh wait.. ive read the book...

It could be hard to stretch out from meeting to start of journey into one film.. that would really be dragging it out... surely till end of the goblins would make a more logical point. then second could end with them arriving at the dragons lair.

The Hobbit was a single Book

The three books of the trilogy were actually two books each..
it would have made more sense to have made the trilogy into more movies.

Jacksons Trilogy left out so much of the First anf last books , he turned the hobbits into minor characters.

Lord of the Rings story line was so crammed, compressed in some spots, and overly drug out in other spots-- just too darned long. I hope this venture will remedy the 'numb bootie' syndrome we all suffered with L.O.T.R trilogy.
