PETA Is Protesting the New Show 'Animal Practice': Whose Side Are You On?

There’s more trouble brewing for the new NBC series “Animal Practice.” First, they pre-empted The Who and Ray Davies at the closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics. Now, PETA is protesting the show. The animal rights group feels Crystal, the monkey star of the sitcom, is being exploited and have rallied the troops to let NBC know they are not pleased.

animal practice

They posted on their Facebook page this morning and asked their followers to join in protest today in Burbank at the NBC studios. They were also looking for volunteers to wear monkey masks, which they provided to willing participants on site. For anyone who couldn't make it in person, or who didn't see the post in time, it's not too late to support the cause. They can still join in the fun by wearing black in support of Crystal.

They pleaded with fans, “We would love to have you come out and hold a sign and help hand out leaflets!" PETA is bringing up an age-old question in the entertainment industry. Is it cruel towards animals to put them in front of the camera solely for our entertainment? Crystal, who has starred in both “Night at the Museum” and “The Hangover Part II,” has not commented on the alleged exploitation. So, whose side are you on: NBC’s or PETA’s?

Probably because you don't bother to read about the reasoning behind PETA's tactics and prefer to get your information from industry front groups.

I don't care what the reasoning behind PETA's tactics are. Any group that uses fear and terror to gain followers to their way of thinking is a terrorist group. That is what PETA does, and that is what PETA is. I don't like associating with terrorists, just on principle. Not to mention that PETA protests things just to get in on the hype and popularity of something. So...when fear doesn't work, they resort to pathetic tactics like protesting popularity, which makes people even LESS likely to listen to them.

How do they use terror, exactly?

For one, they like to hand out flyers to school children showing mutilation of animals. They like to use fear to change people's minds. Have you ever played any of the games on their website? They're mostly bloody, gory, and focus on mutilation and torture to try to get their point across. Or just go look at the videos they put out. They use the most extreme images and video clips and attribute them to all circumstances, even if they don't apply. They act like all farmers everywhere keep their livestock in the tiniest cages they could find and regularly beat their animals and stab them just for good measure, which simply is not true. Animal cruelty happens, but that certainly doesn't mean that the entire industry needs to be demonized for what relatively few people do. PETA never supports animals being used for anything, even if no cruelty is present.

You do realize I've actually done the research right? You realize there's a good reason why I back groups like the APSCA and the AHS (Which both, by the way, work closely with Hollywood and other groups that use animals to ensure animal saftey and humane treatment occurs) right?

Or is PETA just your god and you must challenge any "heretic" that comes along to besmerch their "good" name?

Not sure what the AHS is, so I can only assume you're talking about the AHA, which is the organization that monitors the animals that are used in movies. I agree that their intentions are good, but they don't provide adequate oversight. For one thing, they only monitor what goes on on the set, not how the animals are trained. There's also this: http://www.latimes.com/entert...

Ok, well, AHA (American Humane Association) is the one that monitors animals on movie sets and provides that little 'no animal were harmed in the making of this movie' endorsement in the credits.

Perhaps do some research on monkey behavior. "Smiling" can mean a number of things, and the rest of the body language is what really determines the actual meaning. It can mean fear, this is true, but it can also mean anger or happiness, so you can't just put a blanket meaning on it.

Not to mention that how wild monkeys and apes behave really hold no bearing on the behavior of a hand-raised monkey. She's been raised around humans, and trained in such a way. There are certain cultures around the world that smiling is a fearful or nervous reaction, that is how they were raised, but that doesn't mean that when you smile because you're happy that it means the same thing.

Yes, I am aware of that fact. I do admire their beauty, but yeah, when I see one close up (or sometimes even on screen!) I shall run away screeching like an old time horror movie girl. XD

See, these are the things that PETA should be going after, but they don't. They might complain about it on occassion (with the exception of ANYTHING having to do with fish, who apparently don't feel, so don't matter), but they don't actively protest these things, they don't go out and try to stop these things from happening. They don't even support humane euthanasia of animals (no matter the industry), instead just lumping all the bad in with the good.

Not a problem. I totally support people not being cruel to animals, but I think that PETA is just looking to gain popularity, rather than face the real issues head on.

    And I love sharks.

regardless of how you feel about PETA, this is about the animals who suffer for a few fleeting moments of "entertainment." I think we can all agree that animal abuse is unethical and slavery is unethical, so please explain to me how it is necessary or justifiable to abuse a terrified monkey into submission so he can perform "tricks" for a stupid show?

I'm just curious but have you ever personally worked with or trained a Capuchin Monkey? Obviously that's a retorical question because there's no way you could have. I have however, worked with and fed and loved and trained several Capuchin monkeys and they were so happy to come out of their HUGE habitat to play with me. They lived in a family group so they were not secluded in a "cage" and they loved to learn new things. They would all vie for my attention and do tricks and silly acrobatic movements to make me laugh. I didn't even have to use food to train them. They copied my actions and then got excited and happy when I clapped and laughed. They would cuddle in my arms and pick through my hair like I was one of them. There is NO way in the world that "Crystal" is grimacing in fear. I have seen a scared monkey and they WOULD NOT stay on the set!!

Peta took thousands of dogs from the humane society and euthanized them in the back of a van, then threw them in a grocery store dumpster. Now thryve closed down a wonderful cat rescue here in Fl.called Caboodle Ranch. They chased down 700 terrified little cats for days, just to throw their weight around and draw attention to themselves.Peta sux.,however animals should not be exploited.

PETA is a whacko organization that places animal life and rights above human life and rights! These people are as radical and crazy as the Islamists. Most animals used in television are better off than they would be in their wild environments.

if PETA took the animal, they'd just leave it in a cage for a while, then kill it... it's way better off where it is, even if it's being beaten every day! Those PETA people make me sick!!

As long as they are being treated well, I see nothing wrong with having animals on TV and in movies. PETA kills thousands of animals, and yet they are worried about a monkey on TV? Those people are crazy.

Look the monkey isn’t being beaten or starved or harmed in any manner. What is wrong with these people? I certainly don’t approve of abusing animals but, come on PETA; most of us across the country eat animals for dinner. Keep your nose out of other people’s business.
