PETA Is Mad That Honey Boo Boo Named Her Chicken 'Nugget': Understandable or Overreaction?

Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson has a new pet chicken, but PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) aren’t too happy with the name she has chosen for it: Nugget. According to E!, the organization has sent her a letter suggesting a different name "in order to honor her as your friend and protect other chickens just like her."

Getty Images

The letter, written by PETA rep Michelle Cho, says that “chickens are smart, interesting animals with personalities of their own," and suggests that Alana rename her chicken “Not a Nugget” so that people know that “they should be nice to chickens by not eating them."

Cho also says that Alana doesn’t have to stop eating chicken nuggets, because "there are yummy vegan-chicken nuggets in grocery stores today that taste just like meat.” Perhaps she hasn’t seen “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”? Do you think the letter is understandable or a total overreaction?

First of all, fie to you PETA for forcing me to take sides with Honey Boo Boo. Your treachery will never be forgotten this day.

Second, does PETA even take themselves seriously? No one else does.

PETA is worried about a name of her pet nugget, They don't have anything better to do. I find this strange because I just heard on TV, that china is getting there ivory from africa. Now, do I think it is wrong to kill a Elephant for Ivory, yes, Where is PETA on that one.

Oh, why do we have such a society that has to bitch (oopsie! Is that derogatory to dogs or something?) about just EVERYTHING? Obviously a child that age doesn't have any idea about the unhappy process whereby a chicken becomes a McNugget (if in fact there is a measurable amount of chicken in it). Most kids don't. (The late humorist Sam Levinson said he and his siblings thought cows laid meatballs like chickens laid eggs.) When it's age-appropriate, kids need to be clued in to the process whereby food comes to their plate; it ain't pretty, and we shouldn't dodge that reality or become insensitive to it (like the dad I know who though it was funny that his kid wanted to name pigs "Chops" and "Bacon").

I don't necessarily demand we all become vegetarians. I'm an old farm girl and know perfectly well about where and how meat originates. I was raised, however, to respect deeply the fact that another being had to die so I could have sustenance, not to waste food in acknowledgement of that sacrifice and the efforts of the people who had to do all the dirty work, and most of all, while that animal was under my stewardship, to take the best care possible of it and to assure as best I could, that its death was swift and humane. Dr. Temple Grandin has done tremendous work on this and I wish the livestock industry would uniformly adopt her recommendations.

While I myself am not a fan of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo", I think that this is just ridiculous. I am a vegetarian. I believe in the humane treatment of animals but I do NOT believe in forcing your opinions on other people. Suggesting that she change the name of her pet? Ridiculous. Suggesting that she stop eating meat? Even more ridiculous.

Who cares what PETA thinks? I mean I don't want to see animals hurt or tortured, but I eat MEAT, I like the look, feel and smell of top quality leather, and I used to make my living tooling leather...I even wore what became my signature gray rabbit fur poor boy hat at one time! So, PETA is once again just knee jerk reacting and/or attempting to grab some sensational headlines...as usual. Again...who cares?

PETA seems to be constantly overreacting. It's a cute name made by a small redneck child. What do they expect? That's kind of like when I was in 4H when I was younger...I had a hog named bacon, and steers named lunch and dinner. But of course, I'm a farm girl, and we eat animals. And they're delicious.

Hello, where do they think nuggets come from? At least on this issue her parents have educated her about the REAL world!
My parents have chickens and my 4yr old daughter wanted to watch my dad butcher it when it was killed by our dog. She loves animals and had raised them as chicks, but knew at the end of the day they are food, not friends!

Damn PETA, get a real life. How many of your members wear any type of leather, and know the exact source of that leather? How many of your members know the exact source of everything that they eat, or buy? Move on to another universe, please!
