Penn State Slammed With NCAA Sanctions: Did They Deserve It?

Many player's career opportunity shattered by this perv and the over reaction of the NCAA.

Why are we punishing all the players too insn't that nonsensical..

When sports are more important than the people in the sport, then it is time to reconsider the place sports has in our schools.

In time, most will forget, like Kolby raping that girl.

Yeah, sure. So Penn State never won all of those games. And the Steelers never won a Superbowl. And Lincoln was never assassinated. And the World Trade Center is still standing. Give me a break. Sandusky was the criminal, take it out on him. What they have done to Penn State and Joe Paterno's legacy is wrong. If they want to make an example they should hang Jerry Sandusky by the testicles in State College and let his victims use him as a pinata.

Sandusky got away for as long as he did because of Paterno who actively prevented university officials from reporting his assistant coach from being reported as far back as 2001.
Sandusky was an abuser, Paterno was an abettor and only one'll face the music.

As demonstrated in court, not only was a crime commited on campus, but because of the systemic corruption within Penn State's athletic department as well as the senior administration a conspiracy to conceal that crime took place. Beyond that, by not pursuing the proper course, they enabled those crimes to continue thereby becoming co-conspirators in future crimes. I'm not sure the sanctions go far enough. The program didn't become corrupt in just four short years. I doubt if four years will be enough to make that house clean enough to trust.

Everybody involved in the wrongdoings deserved to be punished. I just don't understand what people will get out of erasing Penn St's victories from 1998-2012. That didnt have anything to do with the scandal. The kids playing the games had nothing to do with this and they are being punished for no reason. They need to just hammer Sandusky and the administration members who knew individually.

I think the logic is wrong. Jerry Sandusky is guilty, not the coach, not the school. Having Paterno accused might be fair if it's proven that he was somehow aware of Sandusky's sexual abuses with Penn State's football players. But with this kind of logic pushed to the extrem, then the state that finance part of the school is guilty, then the federal government is guilty, then the people who finance the government is guilty...

What are you gonna say to the players, "We know you've been abused, here is justice: you also gonna lose the title you earned."

lets look at what we DO agree on..
sandusky is guilty of rape of children, sodomy with minors. given.

the president and the other guy will have their day in court to see if they are guilty of a crime.

paterno's estate will have their day in civil court.

side note : penn state chose to accept the sanctions for a reason .. and I think the reason is because they agree that they earned the sanctions..

no appeal, no squeling , not a mummer ,,, just took it as , IMO , they should and accept the fact that the university failed , for 15 years , those young boys...

I have to agree here. What's the difference? Both are ridiculous.

My prayers are with the young men who were molested. However, I do not feel that the mistakes, by the adults, should take away the wins of the players and post season games.

The school wasn't the ones making the decision not to come forward but individuals within the school. Hold the individuals accountable that made the decision both criminally and civically but by punishing the school as a whole you're including individuals that had no part in the coverup like the student body, employees, and administrators/trustees (appointed after the fact) who had no part. I can see the $60 Million fine to establish a Foundation but the rest of the punishment impacts those after Sandusky left in 1999, the currently foremention as well as those entering the university in the next 4 years who were never involved in this case.

the $60 mill. might harm the students , but probably not.. penn state does not pay $60 mill, the $$ will be taken out $12 mill at a time from the big 10 proceeds.for 5 years.
for the next 4 years , students can elect to go to an other university, it is not mandatory to go.

seems like you have attempted to have an innocent victim here, in the school or the students.

and you may have been blinded to the actual victims.. the children raped in the football locker room , then penn state officials hide , suppress , the actions for 15 years..

penn state did not deserve the punishment ... penn state EARNED it....

The folks that EARNED it are no longer at Penn State and will be served justice in due time. Those that are remaining were not at fault. You don't punish innocents to set an example, that is the logic of tyrants and dictators.

the university is made up of ... buildings, teachers, students.. that some would benifit from the actions of a few .. football $$ ,,, academics , etc. goes with the terriority ..
and so does the results of the bad things that happen.. it is a University ,
every one gets the good along with the bad..

transfer out of penn state , do not go there , what ever , I do not see the big deal , in compairson , to the punishment the children had to endure , over a 15 year period , due to the actions of the " university "

To the leadership and coaching staff in those years of abuse, it may have been enough. For the students and players victimized by the scandal it was a massacre, massive overkill. I have detested Penn State for years over the condescending attitute of Penn Staters towards others and their educational choices, but I stand beside them here because the NCAA essentially gunned down the Penn State student body, past, present and future!

I grew up watching 'JoePA',so it's sad to see his legacy torn down.However,it's not NEARLY as sad as what these poor young boys went thru!

The poor boys went through hell because their coach and their administration valued the 64 million dollars the football program brought to the school every year more than the lives of the boys who were raped by a man who used the PSU facilities. Every time a team in a college loses scholarships and post season eligibility it is because those in charge of their sport betrayed them.

Unfortunately Joe pretty much gunned his own legacy down by his inaction.

It's been a sordid coverup by all, especially Joe Pa.

I realize this is a minority opinion but let's look at who broke the law. Sandusky obviously. And then the upper administration at PSU. The Grand Jury pointed at them and exonerated Paterno. Yes, Paterno should have reported the allegations directly to the police but instead took it to the administration who had a legal obligation to report it. They did not.
The city, county, and state law enforcement and judical people knew about the first allegation and they were unable or unwilling to pursue it and Sandusky walked and continued his child molesting.
So, yeah, throw the book at the football program if you want but the whole of Penn State is at fault here. And the whole athletic dept. Don't give me this crap about the power of Paterno. A superior is supposed to be in charge and the superiors failed. They could have fired Paterno in 2001. Instead they fired him in 2011, proving that they could.
