Paterno To Remain in Brown Hall of Fame: Did the University Make the Right Decision?

Late Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno's reputation has taken a hit of epic proportions in the last year. The statue honoring him outside of Penn State was removed, as was his spot on a famous on-campus mural. The NCAA also took it upon itself to vacate his wins and college football records. Paterno's alma mater Brown University, however, has opted to take a different route.

The Ivy League university has chose to have Paterno remain in its Hall of Fame, despite damning evidence that linked him to knowing about child molestation going on at Penn State and refusing to take proper action. Brown did remove Paterno's name from awards he won while at the school. He attended Brown from 1946-1949 and was inducted to its Hall of Fame in 1978.

Paterno passed away in January, but not before his legacy became completely tarnished due to the Jerry Sandusky scandal. His family has vehemently denied the accusations brought against him. Brown has received heavy criticism for keeping Paterno in the Hall of Fame, but it was agreed upon by its governing board.

"The decision to remove the statue came ten days after the release of a scathing report by former FBI director Louis J. Freeh which found that Paterno had conspired with three other top Penn State administrators to conceal allegations of child sexual abuse made against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. According to the Freeh report, the motive was self-serving: to shield the university and its football program from negative publicity."

Whatever the motivation or cause for Paterno's actions,, they were nevertheless IMMORAL and ILLEGAL and the VICTIMS of his actions were Children.. ACTIONS have consequences and Paterno's are no different..

If EVER there was a PRIME example of that old saying,, " A Lifetime of GOOD works can be cancelled out by ONE heinous deed.." THIS is one of them..

Paterno should be a lesson to ALL of us.. "All that is necessary for EVIL to Flourish is for GOOD men and women to stand by and do nothing.."..

ALL the MORE so if that man or woman takes a willing part in HIDING it from view..

Joe's accomplishments as a coach should be honored to be in the hall of fame but he should've done something to have helped the boys

Paterno is Dead and he has been convicted without a trial and found Guilty. I'm not saying he is not guilty because I really haven't seen a trial and I thought a person is innocent until proven guilty. I personally believe he is a convenient scape Goat, he can't defend himself. I believe all the actions against Paterno may have violated his legal rights. I believe some higher ups have been spared going to trial, Joe paid the price for their wrong doings. What a tragedy, almost as bad as Obama and liberals killing the unborn, oh but that's ok, Right?

Even though he did not take the right actions he's not the one that did the molesting. Penn state covered it up as much as he did. The man was a great football coach and taking away his awards for football has nothing to do with what he did off the field.. Good job Brown and it is rediculous that he got his wins taken away. Jerry sandoski is the sick one

Why do people insist on acting like the people that wanted Jesus dead like the Scribes, and chief priests? That is how they are treating Joe. Why do people want to hang out with people with a murderous mentality? What is the brown hall of fame anyway. It sounds degrading to me. I think I clicked the wrong one.

If you were in his shoes, would you have stopped at just reporting it and watching it continue a the 'higher ups' refuse to take action and more and more children are attacked??? Do you think that everyone would think it was all good?

If I were him, I would have done what he did; reported it to my superiors.

If I were the people that VISUALLY WITNESSED IT, and nobody seems to have a problem with these guys, I would have stopped it myself and called the police.

You and I both. And i DO have a problem with these guys, but the ultimate responsibility lay with Paterno. It was his watch. Me, I'd have quit, or made a big enough stink for them to think I was going to quit, over the situation and the retention of that member of my staff. EVERYONE @Penn State smells aftr this one.

Let's be clear. You are not responsible for someone else's sin or crime. Even if you heard about it, or saw something. You are not responsible for someone else's misdeeds.

And what the hell is this Joe is going through.?Now tell me you America nim-wits, what would be Joe's punishment if he did what Sandusky did? I don't see how it could be any worse than what you have done to him now. If he kept quiet and did not want to get involved, it is more than likely he did not want to harm the Reputation of Penn State.

And if you hear someone screaming in a hall, and hear a shot, do you you open the door and see what is going on? Maybe. And stand over the body, where the killer dropped the gun on the floor, and then someone else see's you, and they think you are the one who killed the person. And the Police come and arrest you, because you had concern for someone who was shot down.

You think innocent people really want to get involved with someone else's Crime?

So look what you are doing to Joe. Not the same type of crime, but crime is crime, and now you are destroying a good man, who was only standing in the Hall. The Hall of Fame.

Thank you for laying out for us so clearly, much that is wrong and sad in America today. Where footballs reputation is more important than children's lives and sexual health, where our own selfishness is far more important than innocence lost and abused, where no one need take responsibility for anything other than their own self interests. Make all the excuses you want for JoePa ignoring the rape of all those children - he IS guilty of contributing to their lifelong pain, and rest assured, if there is indeed a hell, he has a special place in it. May I never know you.
  • TheR Morrison 2012/09/17 00:34:27 (edited)

Well you are a sick vengeful Morrison. I would like to know your definition of preserving innocence? As we get older we are ridiculed for being so naive. It's OK to support a President and people who are Gay, but when a guy does not want to get involved because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, you deem he is guilty. I see your reasoning. I suppose God who see's all and knows all, is also guilty and God should be condemned too right?

I have a problem with Hall of Fame's in general that remove or refuse to induct somebody based on something they did or did not do off the field that had nothing to do with why they are in the hall or were inducted.

Hiding what was going on in my books is just as bad as the act itself. He could have stopped it years ago but it seems to me football comes first. Very sad.
I believe the rule of law would also look at it that way.
