Paterno To Remain in Brown Hall of Fame: Did the University Make the Right Decision?

Late Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno's reputation has taken a hit of epic proportions in the last year. The statue honoring him outside of Penn State was removed, as was his spot on a famous on-campus mural. The NCAA also took it upon itself to vacate his wins and college football records. Paterno's alma mater Brown University, however, has opted to take a different route.

The Ivy League university has chose to have Paterno remain in its Hall of Fame, despite damning evidence that linked him to knowing about child molestation going on at Penn State and refusing to take proper action. Brown did remove Paterno's name from awards he won while at the school. He attended Brown from 1946-1949 and was inducted to its Hall of Fame in 1978.

Paterno passed away in January, but not before his legacy became completely tarnished due to the Jerry Sandusky scandal. His family has vehemently denied the accusations brought against him. Brown has received heavy criticism for keeping Paterno in the Hall of Fame, but it was agreed upon by its governing board.

"The decision to remove the statue came ten days after the release of a scathing report by former FBI director Louis J. Freeh which found that Paterno had conspired with three other top Penn State administrators to conceal allegations of child sexual abuse made against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. According to the Freeh report, the motive was self-serving: to shield the university and its football program from negative publicity."

Whatever the motivation or cause for Paterno's actions,, they were nevertheless IMMORAL and ILLEGAL and the VICTIMS of his actions were Children.. ACTIONS have consequences and Paterno's are no different..

If EVER there was a PRIME example of that old saying,, " A Lifetime of GOOD works can be cancelled out by ONE heinous deed.." THIS is one of them..

Paterno should be a lesson to ALL of us.. "All that is necessary for EVIL to Flourish is for GOOD men and women to stand by and do nothing.."..

ALL the MORE so if that man or woman takes a willing part in HIDING it from view..

The assistant coach who witnessed the abuse did his job and reported it immediately to Sandusky's superiors. Sure - many feel he should have confronted and assaulted Sandusky immediately and I can sympathize with that position. Paterno on the other hand made a choice - report and damage the school, or don't report and damage the children. He made his choice.

The young man / assistant coach went to Joe and later the AD. He was young and not in a position of authority. He should have beaten Sandusky with a bat, but panicked. Joe is NOT the least culpable. He was the most famous person there, arguably the person with the most power and say, the face of he school, the one going for the record, and the one who talked the AD into giving Sandusky more offices and a greater role. He put his record ahead of the kids. He should go from being an example of great leadership to be an example of how horribly wrong it is to pt fame and personal goals ahead of kids, even when those goals are within reach. We must ALWAYS strive to do the right thing, and no where is that more important than with the safety of children.

He enabled the abuse to continue by choosing to avoid law enforcement and protect the schools reputation.

...... if Penn State officials, like all Bastions of LeftLoonism, weren't so fearful of repercussions from the homosexual community, they likely would have honored your request .... fear of those repercussions cost kids like your kids dearly

So just who or what is the real bad guy in this .... Paterno or the community that practices it ?

The thing here, more than honor, not tomany kids would had been hurt IF this were to have surface early. Like the late actor Lorne Green used to say in " Bonanza " , : There's no such thing as HONOR, just decency ".

...... but in those days, Sandusky would not have made it off the Ponderosa for a Trial in town, he'd have died with his kadabster still in the kids butt .... try doing that in todays world, even though it is the ' decent ' thing to do.

Although in a senior position, Paterno did as he was supposed to do ... Report it to the Top Dog.

Suppose he had circumvented rank and gone to the cops, ya' think he would have been Labeled by the homosexual community and fired .... I do .... may I present Chick-Fil-A as Exhibit A for tolerance by said community.

Go around your direct superior and drop the dime on him to the Top Dog and see who gets fired first, you or him .... if they don't fire you they'll make you want to quit real quick.

Not even for a game. For a guy's record. Trophies. Personal fame and having his name in the record books. And while I would hate anyone who could have stopped it and didn't if a child I knew were molested, there is a special place in Hell for those who do he molesting. I don't know how any of them live with themselves, but Sandusky should suffer physically as long as he remains alive as far as I am concerned.

I know what you mean, anyone who has kids has to think the same way. I have 4 , and God forbid it ever happenned to me , I would definitely take the law under mt hands, when it comes to your kids, wife, parents, if the law wasn't there to protect them, guess what ? " You're the law ". His rigth nest to Michael Jackson in hell.

As a huge, and objective, JoePa fan the punishment leveled against him appears to be extreme. There are too many unanswered questions for me at this point to come to a conclusion about a lot of this stuff. One thing for sure though is that off the off field incident with Jerry had nothing to do with wins and losses and therefore no wins should be forfeited. That is absolute absurdity.

I live in the South now, and when you look at the corruption and cheating that goes on down here in the SEC, for almost ANY school at ANY time, what went on PSU is nothing when it comes down to w's and l's....

Proof? Multiple people have all corroborated discussions they had, acknowledging who knew and when. JoePa even apologized and tried to act like he was 'hands off' on decisions, but knew of the allegations. If you worked with a guy and all those charges came out, wouldn't you watch him closely? If more suspicious events happened time and time again, could you just look the other way and hide it all from the authorities? I hope not and think you should be ashamed of yourself if you think you could.

You say you are a huge fan and then say you are objective. Then you say you think he suffered too harshly. It appears you are the huge fan but not nearly as objective as you think you may be. Sandusky is the molester and I hope he suffers greatly for his deeds. But those who look the other way are almost as bad: they do not have the compulsion or sick mind yet manage to put it aside and allow the crimes to continue in order to save themselves some trouble, win a trophy, gain financially, etc. Disgusting excuses for human beings. Sandusky was a great defensive coach. Rather than fire him or turn him in and lose him as an employee, JoePa kept him (even got him promoted and got him more offic space, and a greater role dealing with kids!) as he didn't want to risk the record he was building. They absolutely should lose all the records and wins as neither Joe nor the school should profit by their actions.

The thing about records is.. It doesn't matter what someone has done outside of sports. They set the records.. You have to keep them otherwise history is bunk. That's why i always say History is just like another form of storytelling. Its mostly a lie and told by biased people who want something to be true. The truth is crazier than you want it to be.
