Paterno To Remain in Brown Hall of Fame: Did the University Make the Right Decision?

Late Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno's reputation has taken a hit of epic proportions in the last year. The statue honoring him outside of Penn State was removed, as was his spot on a famous on-campus mural. The NCAA also took it upon itself to vacate his wins and college football records. Paterno's alma mater Brown University, however, has opted to take a different route.

The Ivy League university has chose to have Paterno remain in its Hall of Fame, despite damning evidence that linked him to knowing about child molestation going on at Penn State and refusing to take proper action. Brown did remove Paterno's name from awards he won while at the school. He attended Brown from 1946-1949 and was inducted to its Hall of Fame in 1978.

Paterno passed away in January, but not before his legacy became completely tarnished due to the Jerry Sandusky scandal. His family has vehemently denied the accusations brought against him. Brown has received heavy criticism for keeping Paterno in the Hall of Fame, but it was agreed upon by its governing board.

"The decision to remove the statue came ten days after the release of a scathing report by former FBI director Louis J. Freeh which found that Paterno had conspired with three other top Penn State administrators to conceal allegations of child sexual abuse made against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. According to the Freeh report, the motive was self-serving: to shield the university and its football program from negative publicity."

Whatever the motivation or cause for Paterno's actions,, they were nevertheless IMMORAL and ILLEGAL and the VICTIMS of his actions were Children.. ACTIONS have consequences and Paterno's are no different..

If EVER there was a PRIME example of that old saying,, " A Lifetime of GOOD works can be cancelled out by ONE heinous deed.." THIS is one of them..

Paterno should be a lesson to ALL of us.. "All that is necessary for EVIL to Flourish is for GOOD men and women to stand by and do nothing.."..

ALL the MORE so if that man or woman takes a willing part in HIDING it from view..

    I agree,,

    what is the saying,
I came to bury paterno, not praise him

I would think, for all involved, to bury paterno , and move on, of course it is a little tough for those 12 or 15 boys that got raped to move on .. or their families to forgive and forget ,,

Well, one thing i do know for sure Patric, is that it's possible to move on from such a traumatic experience, especially when an individual has the kind of support these young men appear to have and that's a very good thing to aid in helping them to move on from this, thank goodness!

So does Brown University support pedophiles like Paterno does? Hmmm, I wonder if other pedophiles are in the Brown Hall of Fame?

No he didn't get bent over the table! It is the student body of Penn State that got bent over the table by a self-righteous NCAA crusade!

When one has a case of cancer, the doctor uses methods to attack the cancer, you don't just gut the patient and brag that you got it all!. We see from our slaughter houses that only a carcass exists after such treatment.

I used to hate Penn State because of the arrogance of those Penn State grads and rabid supporters I knew, who seemed to have a passion for making other feel small. No one, not even Penn State deserves to be effectively stated out on an ant hill to be stripped of its life!

Shame on Penn State. The cowards threw Joe Pa under the bus to try to save their own sorry asses. One who think that Joe himself was the molester by the way he was persecuted. It's so wrong to see such a decent man disgraced by those unwilling to take their share of the blame. God Bless you,Joe. You were a class act, so matter what the cowards what people to believe about you.

yep, forget about the investigation, forgot about all the evidence over a 10 year period, forgot about the ncaa , the courts , etc,

he is joe paterno and I do not care what he allowed , it does not matter if he permitted a child rapist to do his molestation ,with paterno's knowledge in the football locker room ..

none of that counts , he was a foot ball coach , that is all that counts..

wow, how can some people live with them selves, the rapist , the accomplice , the people that accept child ass rape as ok.. damn,

He sacrificed kids for the sake of wins, a record, and his reputation. He ruined the school's rep and cost them their wins and millions of dollars in fines. He should be wiped from their books.

Yes, actually. Although I don't think they should give ti to the family, but to the victims. I think the university should place as much distance from him as they can (although I don't think for a second the administration isn't just as complicit in looking the other way).

..... naughty, naughty EW 37, you're almost sounding like the guy at 1600 ... giving to a victim and not returning the money to the actual senders has a strange smell of BaRobin Hood about it.

The Law will compensate the victims with Jerry Sandusky's estate if the case should be heard ..... and a Defamation of Character suit by the Paterno family should add a few million to the 6 million Penn State owes the Patern estate.

Want cash for the victims .... Body Parts .... start dismembering Sandusky and auction the parts, starting with the least life effecting and working right up to his still pumping heart ..... if he has a rare Blood Type, keep him going for a few pints more.

You didn't think I came by the name ' Intolerant ' by accident, did you ?

.... I know I'm somewhat alone in this thought, but I contend that Paterno did exactly as he was required ... Reported to the Top Dog.

Reason I say this Dave .... what would the Top Dog do to you if you circumvented the Chain of Command at your employment .... Whistleblowers usually end up with the short end of the stick.

Paterno wasn't about to go to the police and jeopardize his job so he followed Chain .... and the Top Dog wasn't about to go to the police because they were fearful of repercussions from the LGBT Nazi's who have the Media by the short-hairs .... may I present Chick-Fil-A as Exhibit A in the repercussions department.

I think we all know that Joe Pa was a pretty upstanding man .... can you picture him letting some kid(s) being used as an anal cum dumpster without entertaining the thought of getting his knuckles bloody .... me neither. I give him credit, I'd have handled it somewhat differently.

Leaders don't do 'only what is required'. Good human beings don't do 'only what is required'. People who deserve to have statues in their image aren't those who did 'only what was required'. Did he do anything illegal? Maybe not. Did he put his record and the school's rep ahead of children being molested? Absolutely.

....... you do know that there is a Presumed Dead/Missing District Attorney in this case, don't you ?

.... a D A who was investigating the Charge years earlier .... rather coincidental that a man the size of Sandusky with a D A peering into his history suddenly has No Charges and no D A behind him any longer ..... ya' think Paterno may have been just a little nervous of a guy who likely ' Off'd ' a D A ?

But an articles shows that prior to it all, the DA himself was looking into ways to destroy hard drives and whether water would wipe one. He may have been paid to leave and take all his info with him. He also may have been a pedophile himself and wanted to get rid of all evidence, whether for trial or before an enraged parent grabbed him. Who knows? His turning up would make things interesting though, regardless of the Penn State fiasco.

It does negate it. That's the point. Hitler could have donated all he wanted to charity, but is still a monster. JoePa is not Hitler, but I hope you get my point: 50 years of helping a school win football games and donating money while you let children be molested and give a job to a pedophile where repeatedly there are accusations and issues? Sorry, but no amount of money or football wins or notoriety excuse that. His statue, a symbol of dedication, should be taken down as he is now a symbol of winning at any cost, even if that cost is the innocence of young boys.

Boat ramp implies he got on a boat, he or someone took the hard drive, and he left via boat. Its not that hard to disappear, especially with a few million in cash.

He and his statue were a symbol of the school, its programs, and being champions. He and his program are now symbols of putting winning ahead of the kids, and putting personal and institutional fame ahead of being good human beings. The school admin looked the other way as well and is equally complicit, but the new admin should set the correct tone: we will not put pedophiles or those who look the other way up on pedestals, literally or figuratively.
