Parents Protest Lady Gaga Anti-Bullying Video: Understandable or Absurd?

An anti-bullying video produced by David Lloyd George Elementary and Churchill Secondary in Vancouver, Canada is under fire from a civic group called Burnaby Parents' Voice. The video in question depicts groups of students from nine schools dancing to Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" while wearing pink shirts with the word "acceptance" on them, meant to mimic the success of a recent anti-bullying flashmob. Burnaby Parents' Voice is concerned about the implications of the message, and the incorporation of Lady Gaga's music, in particular.

One Parents' Voice member said in a press release, "Will this project reduce bullying? Not likely. They claim this sends a 'positive social message' of acceptance of self and others. Not for overweight kids, anorexic kids, or those who don’t dance well. Not those who resist their school's promotion of Lady Gaga's 'sex sells' worldview." Last year, the group explain that it "questioned the legality and the educational purpose of posting students' images on the Internet, as well as the appropriateness of Lady Gaga as a learning resource in public schools." Are these concerns understandable -- or just plain absurd?

If Lady Gaga stops one kid from packing a gun off to school or from contemplating suicide because of excessive bullying, then her campaign was a success. If the pink shirts cause positive or negative controversy, then I think its stil a win-win situation for the kids. Who really cares what the parents think? Their days of being bullied by classmates are behind them.

I'm all for celebrating diversity and I'm in favor of practical anti-bullying measures in school, but I see a contradictory message in the video. They claim to support diversity, but everyone in the video is wearing the same clothes and doing the same dance moves ~ it looks almost communistic, like pink is a gentler version of red. I found the overall effect creepy.

"Don't be a drag, just be a queen." Hardly the only options available, but whatever, right? I mean it's a pop song. But it's not the message I would choose to encourage children to be themselves.

I think its absurd that Parents' Voice think that it should promote acceptance of ALL kids, overweight, anorexic and 'those that can't dance'... The song says "Born this way" it is obviously a video to promote equality and support the gay community. You aren't born fat or anorexic, (at least not if your parent is healthy) you BECOME that way. You can't control whether you're gay or straight, you're born that way, just like the song says, and you can't be a 'natural' on the dance floor, you LEARN to dance, just like you learn to crawl and walk. A baby's bounce to music, is them learning rhythm, and to dance, it doesn't really count - at least in my book - as dancing. I think the video's just fine, you can tell the kids are having fun, and there's no vulgar dance moves that I saw, unlike the Abraham Lincoln kid in the JC Penny commercial that has been airing recently.

The kids should also be taught that we should look beyond this life even as there is an eternity beyond this life. Teach that there is an eternal reward for those that give good things now preparing for eternity in God presence. We can't see Gods glory right now because God who gave us all good things has not said it is done. In this life those that do bad not being repentant will get bad in the end, and those that do good will get good in the end. God is equal. Gods light when it shines is what hell is to the wicked. That light when it shines will purify all things in the universe changing even the topography of the earth.

I understand the parents not liking this song. It's not trying to do anything for Bullying but trying to promote the gay lifestyle. That is what this song is about anyway. People can sit and grip about parents not liking Lady Gaga but it's understandable. If you listen to the words it plainly says "Don't be a drag just be a queen". It says this over and over. It is a clear reference to the gay lifestyle. The media is already promoting the gay lifestyle as normal when it isn't. Here words "Baby I was born this way" is also trying to make people accept the gay lifestyle. I do not agree with this video or the message it is bringing. The Bible clearly speaks against homosexuality and as a Christian I also do not accept the lifestyle. I welcome homosexuals into my church where they will hear the truth. Trouble is they know it's wrong and will come to a true Christian church for no other reason than to cause trouble and scream "HATE CRIME" because we do not agree with the lifestyle. This video has a double meaning and bullying is not one of them. I know that there will be people who disagree with what I am stating and I understand that. That is one of the things that made this country great, being able to agree to disagree. Trouble is too many want to push their agenda and can't tak...

If you agree with it so be it. I will be more than willing to let God sort it out in the end.

Trying to make young people feel okay about who they are does more help than harm. No one should be scared of ashamed because of who they are attracted to. Everyone does have the right to an opinion. Yes, but there is one little problem. The Bible has and or should have little to do with how people should be treated. Not everyone believes in the Bible and I , personally, do not believe people who support acceptance of homosexual are trying to push an agenda. Homosexuals should not be viewed in a different light simply because of their sexuality. At least not in the eyes of our government. Individuals can think whatever they want but the gay community just wants to be treated like everyone else. It is not like they are asking permission to marry in a religious institution. They want to be married by law. Not religion and they don't want to be looked down on.
  • Paul Leslie 2012/03/02 06:46:52
    Paul
The trouble with your statement is that you believe the government should tell us what is right and what is wrong. I totally disagree. Our government says it is ok to kill an unborn child, this, to me, is murder. The government has totally destroyed morality in this country. I do not believe that a couple should be looked at as married when they are both of the same sex. That is not morally acceptable. You may think they only want to be seen and accepted but they have another agenda. Open your eyes and your ears. They want us to support them even if we disagree with them. That isn't freedom that comunism.

Government's job is not to promote "morality." Both sides want to control it, and both sides want to hold you suspect if you question it.
  • Leslie Beat Ma... 2012/03/02 13:51:10

Exactly! Morality seems to be stemmed into religion for most of the people I see here. HAs everyone forgotten that church and state are seperated?
  • Paul Leslie 2012/03/03 06:12:58
    Paul
Seperation of church and state is NOT in the constitution. People need to understand that and stop this lie that has been perpatraited by the liberal media to stop people from saying anything against the governments mandates against humanilty. This country has gone down hill since the day that Ted Kennedy won the bill to allow the minority to rule theis country rather than the majority. I agree that what someone else wants to do is their business. I also feel that if that right causes me to pay for their rights with the tax dollars I pay then no they should not have the right. People of same sex marriage have no legal grounds to be married. It is law that a marriage should consist of ONE MALE and ONE FEMALE. Not the bible, LAW.

According to you. You don't have to get an abortion. You don't have to get married to a person of the same sex. We shouldn't try to limit other people's freedom simply because it doesn't appeal to our "morality". As long as they do not cause injury to another, Who should tell us what is right and wrong? God? A suprising amount of people are proclaiming themselves sgnostic or atheist. What about them? who should they look to?

If kids are trying to express how they feel creatively, I see no problem in it. The point they're trying to get across is that everyone is different & should be accepted. They like Lady Gaga & this song was adopted by them to effectively get their point across in a fun way. It's getting notice, even though more can be done to relay how Bullying effects them & those around them adversely. I know the song expresses that people are born to be who they are, but other circumstances & personal choices should also be included.

This is no surprise. Parents, teachers and school administrators have given their approval to bullying for decades. They promote it, allow it, turn a blind eye to it and almost never do a thing to stop it. Of course they object to Lady Gaga defending the kids. Bullying starts at home and the parents of the bullies don't want their kids cured of it.

This is an anti-bullying video trying to send a positive message, and parents are complaining about it just because they don't like Lady Gaga? Ridiculous. They say it won't likely help prevent bullying? They don't know that. If they don't like the video, than fine, than they can go make their own! But they shouldn't sit there criticizing another's video, just because it features a Lady Gaga song.

Basically Lady Gaga is Bi sexual and she supports anti Bullying on anyone for the world, but she still gets bullied because she likes women. Straight men seem to see lesbian woman as more excepting then gay men because they like women to begin with. Also religion plays a big part of the way the world works....
