Parents Protest Lady Gaga Anti-Bullying Video: Understandable or Absurd?

An anti-bullying video produced by David Lloyd George Elementary and Churchill Secondary in Vancouver, Canada is under fire from a civic group called Burnaby Parents' Voice. The video in question depicts groups of students from nine schools dancing to Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" while wearing pink shirts with the word "acceptance" on them, meant to mimic the success of a recent anti-bullying flashmob. Burnaby Parents' Voice is concerned about the implications of the message, and the incorporation of Lady Gaga's music, in particular.

One Parents' Voice member said in a press release, "Will this project reduce bullying? Not likely. They claim this sends a 'positive social message' of acceptance of self and others. Not for overweight kids, anorexic kids, or those who don’t dance well. Not those who resist their school's promotion of Lady Gaga's 'sex sells' worldview." Last year, the group explain that it "questioned the legality and the educational purpose of posting students' images on the Internet, as well as the appropriateness of Lady Gaga as a learning resource in public schools." Are these concerns understandable -- or just plain absurd?

If Lady Gaga stops one kid from packing a gun off to school or from contemplating suicide because of excessive bullying, then her campaign was a success. If the pink shirts cause positive or negative controversy, then I think its stil a win-win situation for the kids. Who really cares what the parents think? Their days of being bullied by classmates are behind them.

I'm sick of the hypocrisy. If I HAVE to accept your religon for what it is, then you HAVE to accept my beliefs for what they are. You may not have to participate in them, but sorry... you have to accept them. If this gets one kid to not bully another, its served its purpose, end of story.

Speaking as someone who was bullied all through elementary, junior high and high school. we need more people to speak out against bullying and it doesn't matter who does it either.

This video does not promote anti bullying but is, in itself, a bullying tool. Lady GAGA, and to me she is no lady, is promoting the gay lifestyle and bullying people by saying if you disagree you are a bully. Everyone on here who says I have to accept the gay lifestyle is a bully yourself. It should go back to when kids were kids. Somebody bullied you you could stand up for yourself. Now we have to tell our kids that if they are bullied they need to go to the teacher. The teachers, who are in some casses bullies themselves, label the very kid that did what they are telling them to do a tattle tail. If a kid is bullied they need to stand up for themselve and stop the bully. If they must do it physically then so be it. If you were bullied all through school you must have been, and probably still are, a whimp. There comes a time in life when you have to stand up for yourself. If you don't you will be runned over all your life.

At first I wasn't, I used to be a bully myself till my elementary school teacher made me change my handwriting style. It changed my personality from the bully to the one being bullied.

I love what she is trying to do here. I dont see anything wrong with being gay... A lot of people are debating about that in here. But for me the song is just saying just be proud of who you are no matter what "faults" people believe you have, ie sexuality and race. I like people for who they are and how they treat me...not by "what" they are

I tip my hat to Lady Gaga. Here is a young, rich famous woman trying to make a difference. If anyone has ever been bullied, or any parent has seen their child been bullied, you KNOW the scares that bullying leaves. If you've never experienced bullying, then you either are not paying attention and hiding your head in the sand, or .... perhaps you are one of the bullies? We need to bring attention to bullying and put a stop to it through education in the schools. Ultimately, the education should begin at home with the parents, but if the parents won't educate their children on the dangers of bullying, then let's have our teacher do it!

As far as the video, I think it says it ALL. Hope this video goes "viral", and hope the media gets behind Lady Gaga and her efforts. My sincere thanks to you, Lady Gaga. You are one of the good people.

The video's a revelation to those watching that a fair number of people collectively are okay with same sex interests and that that perspective shouldn't be coerced to change their feelings on those issues through derision, threats, beatings, abductions, and murder. I don't feel that including those who are LGBT sympathizers and part of that community with an anti-bullying theme is a poor way to get their message across. I support any serious attempt to point out that bullying those who are innocent of any wrong-doing to others is an action that won't be put-up-with.

Born this way is a twisted song lyrics wise. Yes homosexuals may be born with a TENDENCY to more attracted to thier own gender but that doesn't mean that that tendency has to be followed, encouraged, or treated as normal. So I find that them dancing to this song could be very easily be offensive for kids to be dancing to even for a noble cause such as anti-bullying. If they'd have danced to Michael Jackson's ''Heal the World'' or Chris Rice's ''There is a Candle'' than their probely wouldn't be quite the outrage by the parents. The lyrics of ''Born This Way'' and Gaga's well known support of GLBT causes are what caused the parents anger over this video. If they would have changed the song and the artist and not worn pink shirts (perhaps purple shirts instead) than most parents would have applauded this noble campaign against bullying. Also this anti-bullying ''this get's better'' type of campaigns are too focused on the GLBT issues and not on those who get bullied for other things which is sad.

Yes, the song mentions LGBT themes, but it also mentions being accepting to other races as well. People focus on one line of the song and assume the entire campaign is focused on homosexuality.

That's one of the two problems of this video. #1) The song has GLBT themes that are explicitaly stated in the lyrics that parents can pick up/not agree with. #2) Lady Gaga is known for supporting the GLBT community...... As for the Racial themes, well the group DcTalk handles this much better in songs like Walls and What Have We Become for example. Heck, even Cyndi Lapher's song True Colors would pass the sniff test more with parents because it doesn't explicitly mention homosexuality and some people don't know who Cyndi is. Picking such a popular song by a currently well known singer that is known to support the GLBT movement AND to use a song of hers that contains explicite homosexual endorsing lyrics are two strikes against this video then add in the pink shirts and this video can become ''offensive'' to some. If the song & artist chosen weren't so controversal then the good message of anti-bullying wouldn't be overshadowed by the controversal song & artist & people would see the positive message instead.

I can understand that. But my point is that, the idea is to get through to the kids. Parents aren’t the ones bullying or being bullied…it’s children. And like it or not, kids already look to popular artists like Lady Gaga and what she stands for. It makes it more relatable to the target audience and more likely that kids will actually think twice before bullying anyone for being different in ANY respect, not just homosexuality.

Man! You sound like the poster child for bullying. you have a hateful "If you don't agree with me you're wrong" attitude. Take some of your own medicine and lighten up. I do not agree with people being bullied for any reason, I also don't believe that, just because I don't agree with the "GAY" lifestyle, i am wrong because I don't agree with this video and song. That doesn't make me ignorant or bigoted. I believe in the premise of "Live and let Live", but just because I disagree with you doesn't make my opinion hateful, just different.

The explanation and question is misleading. This is not about bullying. It is about indoctrinating children in an attempt to make homosexuality acceptable to everyone. The song says, "Don't be a drag, just be a queen... because you were born this way." What the homosexual community wants to get rid of is more than bullying. They want to do away with all peer pressure that would steer people away from homosexuality. They are obsessed with getting everyone to accept their unnatural and sick behavior because they think if that happens then they will stop feeling shame and guilt. What they don't realize is that even if the whole world "accepts" their demented behavior their innate knowing of what is not natural will still condemn them.

Fortunately some things in our society are taboo and they bring on persecution, such as child molestation and bestiality. If the homos have their way those taboos will erode and our society will completely collapse into a quagmire of confusion, emptiness and hopelessness.

Persecution, bullying and peer pressure are real and effective deterrents to deviant behavior. I don't approve of bullying, hatred or violence but positive peer pressure needs to stay and our kids don't need to be wearing pink shirts with "Acceptance" written on them while singing that homosexuality is natural and normal.

There is nothing wrong with being homosexual. If one person loves another person then they should have the right to be together. Saying homosexuality s wrong is like saying women working is wrong. Well you know what us women got our right to work, and so the homosexuals have the right to be who they are. If you have a problem with that them go take it up with a few gays yourself. How would you like it of some told you that you could be with a person cause of who you are. Think about it!

What if a boy loves a man or a woman a girl? What if we conclude animals can love? We know what is right by nature, not the latest fad and idea. Everyone in the world knows homosexuality is unnatural whether they want to admit it or not. By the way, women working and men shoving their penises in other men's poop shoots is drastically different. If they want to do that then they are welcome too but getting our children to promote it so they will feel better about it is what is wrong, wrong, wrong!.

Imagine if the animals begin to rape their children and they look at humans and say their behavior can be found in the human race so it must be natural. Your argument is equally absurd. Actually your argument is much more absurd since we have intelligence to make better choices than animals do.

According to your reasoning, we are just animals that live by instinct, correct? And of course if our instinct leads us to do something then it must be right, correct? Therefore bestiality is ok, incest is ok, pedophilia is ok, correct? Where do we draw the line? What is the percentage of animals that we see engage in "homosexual" behavior? Is it larger than the percentage of pedophiles among people? Animals live by instinct and they have no moral reasoning ability. You want to believe you are an animal so you can live like one and not take responsibility for your perverted actions. That is plain to see.

For your information they already are. I am a hetero sexual in a marriage I have been in for 32 years. They are now trying to take my benifits and lower them because gays feel they have a right to marriage and marital benifits same as hetero sexual couples. I don't believe they are.

First, you don't know me so don't start calling me names.
Second, the only people who believe there is a "homosexual agenda" seems to be those who don;t agree with it for one insane reason or another.
Third, it is still baffling how you managed to pull such a theory out of a question about bullying. Bullies target everyone and Lady G. happens to one celebrity (like her or not)who is trying to give the situation more light. Stick to answering the question at hand and then write your comments on another question that is more fitting or creat your own. Not saying you have no right to your opinion or anything, it just doesn't fit with this topic.

Are you serious? Watch this video more closely and listen to the lyrics instead of living with a head full of helium and believing what you initially read. You need positive peer pressure to wake up! The song is about being born homosexual and not being able to help it. The pink shirts saying acceptance are about homosexuality, not bullying. if you think this is reaching you are living in a make believe bubble.

You are seeing what you want to see and hearing what you want to hear. I've hear the song and while some of the lyrics do elude to sexual orientation the core theme of the song encompasses much more than that.

I am sincere though slightly sarcastic. If you don't think the video is promoting homosexuality then you are simply incapable of comprehending reality and I feel truly sorry for you. Telling me I am seeing what I want to see is completely blind and ignorant to say the least when the song and video is so blatant and open. Green is still green, blue is still blue, my wife is still a female, the world is still round, etc, etc. and all this is true whether you can see it or not. In your way of thinking blue is only blue if you think it is. It may be green to me. Who is to say?
Wearing pink shirts singing, you were born a homosexual, lesbian, transgender, bisexual person is about as blatant as you can get. They simply throw in a few other issues like the color of skin to further promote their agenda. People of different cultures and colors don't sing songs about being born that way to encourage themselves. Wake up.

I never said the song did not allude to certain elements of alternative lifestyles, it does. It is not promoting it. You are only focusing on that one aspect. I am not blind or ignorant. I can see beyond the tip of my nose.

Undoubtedly not. You can only see what YOU want to see. You are getting angry because he doesn't see what you think you see. This video is nothing more than an add for the homosexual life style. It is bad enough that you cannot say anothing about certain people, the rpesident to name just one, without being labeled a racist. Homosexuals can live and love who they want, but don't tell me I have to accept it. That is just another form of bullying.
