Pamela Anderson Cast as the Virgin Mary: Awesome or Offensive?

No, this isn't a joke. As many of us already know, Pamela Anderson is anything but virginal. But that doesn't mean she can't play one on TV. And the former "Baywatch" babe isn't just playing any virgin: she's currently cast as the Virgin Mary in an upcoming Christmas special.

Sure, the TV special is more a comedy than anything else. But we think it's still a little strange. The former Playboy playmate will portray the Virgin Mary in "A Russell Peters Christmas Special," which will air on CTV -- a Canadian TV channel -- and The Comedy Network.

The Canadian show will feature a mix of stand-up comedy, sketches, animation and some musical performances. In addition to Pamela Anderson and Canadian comic Russel Peters, the special will also include guests like musician Michael Buble, actor Ted Lange and Saturday Night Live alum Jon Lovitz. Russell Peters will host the one-hour special on Dec 1.

Whether it's meant to be a funny joke or not, do you think Pamela Anderson being cast as the Virgin Mary is pretty awesome or downright offensive?

I think the whole idea of doing a funny version in a comedy show of the birth of Jesus Christ is offensive. Not that God doesn't have a sense of humor, but I wouldn't entrust this story to the likes of a bunch of TV comedians. That said, Pamela Anderson would certainly not be my first choice as the Virgin Mary.

Anderson is supposedly an actress - she can portray anything she wants. How believable she it depends on her capabilities. And the imagination of the viewers.

And, just because I find it offensive to parody the birth of Christ doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. I wish it wouldn't be, but more than that, I wish people would stop sanctioning and banning those who make stupid or offensive remarks. Or simply, have different opinions. In the case of offhand remarks, after the obligatory apology, life does not go on as before, for those who have offended those of certain "special" groups or people. I find THAT offensive.

In the broader case of a parody of something another person holds dear - we ALL have a right to do that - or NONE OF US DO. As much as I dislike the thought of someone with the image of Pamela Anderson playing the Virgin Mary - I'm glad she has that right.

As a Christian, I do agree with your stance (*I'm sorry atheists*), but Christians don't curse or use words like "dumbass." And they aren't necessarily "dumb," they just don't believe. Comments like this tend to make atheists madder at us than they already are. Please try not to make the rest of us look bad...

I don't remember any portraits of the Virgin Mary as a blowsy, big fake breasted, tattooed trollop. But then maybe I haven't seen every portrait of her. If that isn't enough to knock her out of the running her age, the bimbo must be close to 50 by now and the fact that she hasn't been a virgin since the age of 9 might make this casting just a little far fetched. By the way has anyone seen any porn videos of the Virgin Mary? I know Pammy is famous for her acting ability. I could give you a blow by blow account of her home movie career but will let you use your imagination.

I hardly think getting Hepititis from one of the most notorious rockers in the USA is something the Virgin Mary would do. Besides Mary should be played by a plainer person.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, she's bringing to life the mother of the man who many believe died for the sins of man so that his followers and believers can be forgiven for their sins so that they can be granted eternal life, so shouldn't her being a sex symbol be forgiven? or should I say who without sin cast the first stone? or how about don't judge lest you be judge? She's an actress people get over it.

She doesn't look the part, she's making no effort to act the part, and that vapid grin...! That's what's offensive about this: that she doesn't even make an effort.

She is simply an ACTRESS hired to play a roll! Who gives a damn about her personal life anyway.... not that any of you have any first-hand knowledge? Just another example of the puritanical pseudo "morality" wereby everyone has the right to critisize another person's lifestyle EVEN THOUGH you have never met that person! Get a life out there!

"nobody in Hollywood is morally qualified to play her", I guess somebody in, say, Oklahoma City would be qualified, oh wait, they are getting hit by earthquakes, they must be bad too. Geez, seems like I can't find any non-sinners to play Mary.

Just a actor playing a role, I am a Christian and I try to keep a Jesus perspective, not a pious, self-righteous perspective.
