Justin Combs, son of rapper and record producer Sean "Diddy" Combs, is under fire for receiving a full $54,000 scholarship to UCLA. Combs received the scholarship for graduating high school with a 3.75 and doing well enough in football to make the Bruins, but some argue that he shouldn't be eligible to receive the scholarship because his dad is worth upwards of $500 million.

The core argument is over whether or not Diddy's fortune should play into the equation at all. UCLA released a statement explaining, "Unlike need-based scholarships, athletic scholarships are awarded to students strictly on the basis of their athletic and academic ability -- not their financial need. Athletic scholarships, such as those awarded to football or basketball players, do not rely on state funds. Instead, these scholarships are entirely funded through UCLA Athletics ticket sales, corporate partnerships, media contracts and private donations from supporters." What do you think P Diddy's son Justin Combs should do?

Nothing wrong that this young man is making his own way. To me it says that his father did a good job with him.

You interpreted that rather oddly, hmm? If he's sitting on $500 million, and takes a free pass at college, when another student could use that to better their future, it's selfish. It has nothing to do with glorifying your hard work, like you're suggesting.

I also find it odd that a Christian is arguing that "pride," a deadly sin, is more valuable than charity.

Envy is just as bad as pride.

Envy is irrelevant here. He's not giving it to a student who's been harrassingly vying for his scholarship/money, but a student who needs it. Could be random.

The envy is being addressed on the part of all these people who think that just because his daddy has money that he shouldn't take an earned scholarship.

That's not envy... What do you think envy means? XD
  • Marcus ... Omni 2012/06/02 21:03:13
    Marcus Clark
There are two kinds of envy.
    1)I want what he has.
2)Because I don't have it, he shouldn't either. (This is even worse than the first.)

The second is displayed quite prominently in many of the answers to this question. One example is resorting to name-calling... "he's narcissistic, greedy, selfish,"... if he doesn't give up what he rightfully earned.

It is also one of the common denominator themes of the OWS movement. ~"How dare that CEO make $$$ per year to run that successful corporation."

This is B.S. The kid earned a scholarship based on his own merits, who his parents are makes no difference. That's how scholarships work.

P.S. The guy's name is "Puffy". I just can't call him "Diddy", it feels wrong.

Whether or not he deserves it (I'm sure he does), doesn't mean that he should get it. He (or rather, his father) can easily pay for any college he ever wants to go for. Leave the money for kids who work hard who can't pay for college. This coming from a girl who wants a lot of college and whose family has no money, this isn't fair. But, to be fair, if my family *did* have enough money to send me without scholarships, I wouldn't even bother trying for any. I would definitely leave the money for the kids who really actually need it.

If he earned it, he earned it. Look, too many scholarships are need-based and it leaves kids who worked very hard out in the cold. Could dad afford to pay his way? Certainly. But I am a conservative because I believe that people are entitled to keep or give away the fruits of their labor, not have those fruits taken from them against their will.

Now, if I were his parent, I might encourage him to consider asking the school to give the financial portion of the scholarship to a needy student with good grades. But if the financial portion is irrevocably attached to his participation on the Bruins squad, he should keep it.

For dignity's sake, his dad should pay for his college and he should make sure that a truly needy student gets the "free" money.

What is up with the rich and famous RIDING the system.

I earned scholarships and I financially needed them, but I still rejected them for the benefit of people who needed them more.
My SAT score alone qualified me for Harvard or MIT.

Since this is an athletic and not a "needs based" scholarship he should take. UCLA thought he was the best so they gave it to him. end of story/

I would be my tennis shoes that there was a far amount of pressure from daddy to GIVE him a scholarship. Or face a verbal blast at every chance by the overblown daddy.

Rich people like him always demand freebies, especially if their name is attached.

So it should be given to a poor person just because he/she is poor and did nothing to deserve it? Even the poor have to earn their way. Diddy did! Grew up in the projects in Harlem.

Good, he should flaunt his success by paying for a mega lavish apartment for his son and his son's tuition.

Isn't Diddy a big obama supporter? isn't obama always saying the rich should pay more? well, here is diddy's chance to prove he is on obamas pay more team./

again, sound byes and politi-hype. They wanna give more money to the government? Just write the damn check and shut up. It's not like they won;t cash it. Better yet, give more to charity! It's better to decide yourself where your money should help since it's an absolute fact that the government is absolutely retarded when it comes to finance!

Agree. Interestingly enough, Buffett has fought a multi-million dollar tax bill for years. Guess he wants to pay more in theory, not reality.

Sounds good on TV, but not when it is time to write the check.

Even though he could obviously could pay for it, he earned that scholarship. His daddy won't be paying for everything he does forever. I find it better that he is going to UCLA on a scholarship rather than having his dad pay for it.

While it is true that P is wealthy - - his son is not! and just because Justin is P's son, doesn't mean he is going to get any of daddies money!

My parents didn't give me anything other when what I needed to survive.

Side note: I love it when girls from a poor family, marry some guy from a wealthy family thinking they are going to live out their lives not having to work - - only to learn later they have been disinherited from the estate and get nothing. (or poor guy marrying a wealthy family girl.)

While I understand scholarships of this type are not need based... I think it's kind of crappy if you're worth half a billion dollars, you don't have to pay for your kid's education. But on the flip side, he earned it just like anyone else.

I would hope that the money P Diddy saves on his kid's free ride gets donated to a need based scholarship fund. Win/Win.

What might be works, is when you are worth a half billion dollars and WON'T pay for your sons college.

I'm middle income management, and I paid 1/2 of college for 3 kids.

He put in the work and he earned it, therefore he is just as entitled to it as anyone else. Of course if he were able to give it to someone in real need, then that would just be a really awesome gesture on his part.

People who work for their success should reap the benefits.

Besides... Nice payoff to get Diddy in the stands. We will see if the boy can actually play ball.

Wonder if Diddy put out a nice "nice donation" to the University?
