P Diddy's Son Got a Full Ride to College: Should He Take It or Leave It for Someone Who Needs the Money More?

Justin Combs, son of rapper and record producer Sean "Diddy" Combs, is under fire for receiving a full $54,000 scholarship to UCLA. Combs received the scholarship for graduating high school with a 3.75 and doing well enough in football to make the Bruins, but some argue that he shouldn't be eligible to receive the scholarship because his dad is worth upwards of $500 million.

The core argument is over whether or not Diddy's fortune should play into the equation at all. UCLA released a statement explaining, "Unlike need-based scholarships, athletic scholarships are awarded to students strictly on the basis of their athletic and academic ability -- not their financial need. Athletic scholarships, such as those awarded to football or basketball players, do not rely on state funds. Instead, these scholarships are entirely funded through UCLA Athletics ticket sales, corporate partnerships, media contracts and private donations from supporters." What do you think P Diddy's son Justin Combs should do?

Nothing wrong that this young man is making his own way. To me it says that his father did a good job with him.

That kid isn't rich, his dad is. Kids generally have to pay for their own college schooling, and so it shouldn't matter on the parents financial status. It depends on the kids.

That's not totally true......the loans are in the kids name, however, when a student fills out a FAFSA (Free Application for Financial Student Aid) application, they are asked a series of questions that determines whether the government will use their information or their parents. Based on those answers, if the student is still financially dependent upon their parents, as most teenagers are, the government uses the parents income as criteria for need. Because UCLA is a private school, their scholarships may be given by donation or other ways and thus, they can give scholarships to whomever and how they want regardless of financial need. Some parents pay those loans for their kids to finance their education when they can afford it and others tell their kids it's on them because legally it's the kids that are legally responsible anyway. I think the U.S. system of financial aid sucks anyway.

His father's wealth has nothing to do with it. If it were funded by the government, then maybe not, but UCLA's private funds are just that....private.

If he earned it, then he should take it. There are a lot of poor kids who didn't earn it. Being poor is not a prerequisite. The kid was obviously talented and was a fit for the team.

And plenty of less fortunate kids who did earn it though. Sure he was fit for the team, great...awesome...wonderful! But leave the $ for others whose Dad's pockets aren't overflowing.

He earned it through hard work, if the school thinks he's worthy of it, then why shouldn't he make his own way?

I think the kid should be rewarded for doing well in school and trying hard. HOWEVER, There are kids who do just as well if not better, who can not afford to go to collage and NEED the scholarship. Give him an award, a car, but save the scholarships for Americans that need it. Not Americans that don't. I say Americans because I also do not think illegals should have the free ride either.

I won't throw a fit if he takes it but I were in that situation I'd "donate" it to another scholarship fund so someone who might qualify on another basis might get the benefits.

First of all, people shouldn't be allowed to be this rich. Secondly, if he earned it, does that mean it would be RIGHT for him to take it? What about the poor high school student who has a 4.0 and can't afford to go to a college without loans or a full ride? Don't you think they deserve it a little more?

So those students don't know how to apply for scholarships anymore? I got 3 scholarships before I graduated high school with a weighted 4.5, that along with Financial Aid paid off my all my years of college, books, etc. plus has some left over for extras.
  • Mechelle Maximus 2012/06/03 23:32:46

Good for you. But I think that even if they apply, they may not get it because the rich kid is getting it. Some can't get enough money to make it all the way through college, and some end up half a million in debt before graduating. Is that fair, when this kid is already a multi-millionare/

That's a private scholarship for the athletes though, if he didn't accecpt it, they probably wouldn't give it out to some other kid that didn't deserve it, or doesn't meet the requirements. They'll keep the money he didn't accept and wait for the next great deserving kid. It feel like disrespect if you don't accept money when its rewarded to you. His dad paid his taxes, and donates so why complain? Justin will take that money and do a good job at the University because he earned it.

That money is only for the chosen athletic players that will be attending UCLA. I'm guessing others that doesn't qualify should get the money huh...Besides its great to go to school at a big discount or for free. Kids shouldn't always depend on their rich ass parents to support them, thats called being spoiled. Don't you think you'll be better off knowing that your kid earned that money by themselves despite all that money you got.
  • Gothica... Maximus 2012/06/04 02:58:31

Yep, I agree. But I still think that the money should be given to someone who really needs it. And nothing will change my opinion.

When it comes down to it, yes he COULD afford to pay for college tuition- but UCLA wants him to play for them, and he's obviously earned it, so he deserves the scholarship. Like they said, it's not based on financial need, so it must have gone to the guy most suited for the job. He worked hard and he deserves to be recognized for that.

I believe in merit, if he EARNED that with his own hard work, does it matter if he has a rich parent?

Last i checked a bright mind gets nurture, a dull mind gets to flip burgers for the rest of their life.

i say take it because he earned it, and it means that he doesn't need his daddy to pay for him cuz he can do it himself.....

and its better than those kids that just leach off of their parents, whether the parents are rich or poor

I don't see why he shouldn't take it. If he can play well enough and loves to play, no ones opinion should be stopping him from pursuing that dream. His father's fame may have played into providing the opportunity, but I think he'd be a fool not to take it if that is his dream.

At the same time there are other kids that do not have the benifit of a VERY wealthy parent. 54k is an outfit to this kid but an education to the rest of us....

I think it is fantastic that this young man is smart and athletic enough to earn this scholarship. But since he does not need the help, I think he should pay his own way and let someone else have the opportunity. This is money that the school could use to help someone else that really needs the help and also has worked hard and deserves a chance.

If he is as smart as his GPA shows him to be, he knows full well he doesnt need this.I applaud his achievement and efforts, however pass this opportunity on down the line to the next kid who worked just as hard and whose parents arent worth millions.

He should be ashamed of himself for taking money from someone who can't afford college. More shameful, is the college who is willing to give him that free ride.
