SLIDESHOW: Which Film Should Win Best Picture?

4 of 9

"Zero Dark Thirty"

Some say "Zero Dark Thirty," about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, still has a shot at Best Picture, despite the controversy about whether it endorses the use of torture.
  1. "Silver Linings Playbook"

    "Silver Linings Playbook"

Some oddsmakers think "Silver Linings Playbook," which has been praised for its handling of mental illness, has a shot at the top prize. It's all about Jennifer Lawrence these days, isn't it?

  2. "Les Miserables"

    "Les Miserables"

It got some flak for the bad singing, but "Les Mis" is up for eight Oscars. Will it take home Best Picture? Not likely, but Anne Hathaway is considered a shoo-in for Best Supporting Actress.

  3. "Lincoln"

    "Lincoln"

"Lincoln" had early buzz for Best Picture, but less so now. The film is up for a leading 12 awards, and Daniel Day-Lewis is the frontrunner to win Best Actor (which would make him the 1st person to win it 3 times).

  4. "Zero Dark Thirty"

    "Zero Dark Thirty"

Some say "Zero Dark Thirty," about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, still has a shot at Best Picture, despite the controversy about whether it endorses the use of torture.

  5. "Argo"

    "Argo"

Oscar snubbed Ben Affleck for a Best Director nomination, but he may get the last laugh: the dramedy about 1979 Iran hostage crisis is favored to win Best Picture.

  6. "Django Unchained"

    "Django Unchained"

The Quentin Tarantino pic has been criticized for making light of slavery.

  7. "Life of Pi"

    "Life of Pi"

The Ang Lee film, based on the beloved 2001 novel, is up for 11 Academy Awards.

  8. "Amour"

    "Amour"

The foreign film about an elderly couple is up for five Oscars.

  9. "Beasts of the Southern Wild"

    "Beasts of the Southern Wild"

The fantasy flick is up four Academy Awards — and nine-year-old star Quvenzhané Wallis is the youngest-ever Best Actress nominee.

Jennifer! Anne! Jessica! Sure, we'll be watching to see what (and who) Hollywood's biggest stars are wearing at this Sunday's 85th Academy Awards, but we also want to know who will walk away with the top prizes — including Best Picture.

This year, nine films are nominated in Oscar's most coveted category: "Silver Linings Playbook" (featuring megawatt stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper); "Les Miserables" (the one Anne Hathaway got super-skinny for); "Lincoln" (Daniel Day-Lewis may go down in Best Actor history for this one); "Argo" (the one Ben Affleck has been snubbed for); "Django Unchained," Quentin Tarantino's controversial "slavery comedy"; "Zero Dark Thirty" (the bin Laden movie); the big-screen adaptation of "Life of Pi"; octogenarian romance "Amour"; and fantasy flick "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

Despite all the talk about Affleck's snub in the Best Director category, "Argo" is considered by many prognosticators to be the top contender to take home the little gold bald guy. But should it?

Best movie I've seen in 2012. It was even better than the Hurt locker.

Well its unanimous even though its too late. Lincoln certainly got snubbed. Zero Dark Thirty, Life Of Pi, and Django Unchained were others who were worthy. Argo did not deserve the win. No disrespect. I like Ben Affleck. I liked the movie. It was an ok movie. But it didnt have much in it like i thought it was going to and should have. It needed to touch more on the mission for one. And it needed to touch more on their fake movie was another. It needed more action. And it was too long and dragged out. Enough said there. I havent even heard of the last two. But Amour sounds like a chick flick and oddly enough another Silver Linings Playbook won. Beasts of the Southern Wild looked good even though i dont know what its about. I really can not believe Lincoln did not win. What bull. What is wrong with Hollywood nowadays? Seriously. And Batman would have been awesome to see as a nominee of course but superhero movies dont usually get nominated for best picture, unfortunately. Also just if i wasnt clear enough on Argo it was not excellent. People need to seriously get over it. It is overrated. Zero Dark Thirty which i have yet to see looked a lot better based on the trailers and previews i have seen. You cant compare the two. Jessica Chastains performance, and the action and storylin...

Zero Dark Thirty which i have yet to see looked a lot better based on the trailers and previews i have seen. You cant compare the two. Jessica Chastains performance, and the action and storyline and come on we were hunting the most wanted man in the world. Enough said there. Les Miserables two words:chick flick. They dont deserve to win, but somehow they do. Must be a lot of chicks out there votin. But Lincoln was probably the best one. Daniel Day Lewis just knocks it out of the park. Non one the other actors except Denzil nominated could even be compared. Seriously. And as much as i enjoyed The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers was much much better. Who cares what the percentages are of who watches them? I just really enjoy the show. And Zero Dark Thirty was really good huh. I have yet to see it. Heard good things about it as well as The Hurt Locker. I really like Jeremy Reinner.

"Oscar voters are nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male, The Times found. Blacks are about 2% of the academy, and Latinos are less than 2%.

Oscar voters have a median age of 62, the study showed. People younger than 50 constitute just 14% of the membership."

Amour is about an old woman who's suffering from paralysis. It's not a chick flick.

SLP isn't a chick flick either.

Lincoln without a Doubt. The reason it didnt win best picture was because most people dont like period pieces.

So The Artist and The King's Speech won why....?

Also, doesn't Argo count as a period piece?

The one that should did! I think the fact that the Academy snubbed Ben Affleck in the directing category did a lot to ensure the win in the Best Picture category.

I tried to watch Beasts of the Southern Wild, which was horrendous in my opinion, and I could not get past about 35 minutes. Everything else has to be better, but I've not seen any of the rest. Just picked one.

A bio pic about our 16th and one of our greatest and most important
Presidents in America's history should definately win that Oscar for
best picture, along with some other Oscars.

Why should "based on reality" have any bearing at all on the decision of which film is best?

In hindsight, I see where you're coming from. The best film involves the actors, director, producers...... Not my "idea".

Actually, none of the above. My vote is:
    The Dark Knight Rises
Even though it wasn't nominated, it's still he best of the year in my opinion...

I think it would have done much better if the metaphor of the rich and powerful (Bruce Wayne) battling and overcoming the "occupy movement" (Bane) had been made a bit clearer.
Certainly, movies that promote American patriotism (Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln) seem to start with a clear advantage.
  • Ms. Mac... Silverl... 2013/05/06 23:12:14
    Ms. Macabre
Sure, but I do kind of like the iceberg filming style that it portrayed.

"Iceberg style"? What's that, making a moving real-life tragedy into a flimsy love story as in Titanic?
  • Ms. Mac... Silverl... 2013/05/14 23:11:07
    Ms. Macabre
It means that only a portion is stated and most of the story's mean is "between the lines" if you get what I'm saying. Only 1/7 of an iceberg is above the water and that's what we're submitted to.

The Bourne Lagacy should win the Oscar because Jeremy Renner shoots down a drone with a rifle. If you don't have a gun you can't shoot down a drone.

I personally wait for the film to come on tv it has to be something I really fancy to go and see it at the cinema. If they were cheaper maybe. Why do they have awards seems a waste of time and money. Everyone knows if the film did well by the sales of tickets.
