SLIDESHOW: Which Film Should Win Best Picture?

"Silver Linings Playbook"

Some oddsmakers think "Silver Linings Playbook," which has been praised for its handling of mental illness, has a shot at the top prize. It's all about Jennifer Lawrence these days, isn't it?

  2. "Les Miserables"

    "Les Miserables"

It got some flak for the bad singing, but "Les Mis" is up for eight Oscars. Will it take home Best Picture? Not likely, but Anne Hathaway is considered a shoo-in for Best Supporting Actress.

  3. "Lincoln"

    "Lincoln"

"Lincoln" had early buzz for Best Picture, but less so now. The film is up for a leading 12 awards, and Daniel Day-Lewis is the frontrunner to win Best Actor (which would make him the 1st person to win it 3 times).

  4. "Zero Dark Thirty"

    "Zero Dark Thirty"

Some say "Zero Dark Thirty," about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, still has a shot at Best Picture, despite the controversy about whether it endorses the use of torture.

  5. "Argo"

    "Argo"

Oscar snubbed Ben Affleck for a Best Director nomination, but he may get the last laugh: the dramedy about 1979 Iran hostage crisis is favored to win Best Picture.

  6. "Django Unchained"

    "Django Unchained"

The Quentin Tarantino pic has been criticized for making light of slavery.

  7. "Life of Pi"

    "Life of Pi"

The Ang Lee film, based on the beloved 2001 novel, is up for 11 Academy Awards.

  8. "Amour"

    "Amour"

The foreign film about an elderly couple is up for five Oscars.

  9. "Beasts of the Southern Wild"

    "Beasts of the Southern Wild"

The fantasy flick is up four Academy Awards — and nine-year-old star Quvenzhané Wallis is the youngest-ever Best Actress nominee.

Jennifer! Anne! Jessica! Sure, we'll be watching to see what (and who) Hollywood's biggest stars are wearing at this Sunday's 85th Academy Awards, but we also want to know who will walk away with the top prizes — including Best Picture.

This year, nine films are nominated in Oscar's most coveted category: "Silver Linings Playbook" (featuring megawatt stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper); "Les Miserables" (the one Anne Hathaway got super-skinny for); "Lincoln" (Daniel Day-Lewis may go down in Best Actor history for this one); "Argo" (the one Ben Affleck has been snubbed for); "Django Unchained," Quentin Tarantino's controversial "slavery comedy"; "Zero Dark Thirty" (the bin Laden movie); the big-screen adaptation of "Life of Pi"; octogenarian romance "Amour"; and fantasy flick "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

Despite all the talk about Affleck's snub in the Best Director category, "Argo" is considered by many prognosticators to be the top contender to take home the little gold bald guy. But should it?

Best movie I've seen in 2012. It was even better than the Hurt locker.

Django was crap. Tarantino is a buffoon. But you're right, Skyfall was unfairly ignored.

Was Lincoln even historically accurate? From the scenes I've seen and actual Abraham Lincoln quotes I've seen, it doesn't match up.

I hated "Silver Linings Playbook" & "Les Miserables" was good but not as good as Lincoln. Didn't see the others.

Les Miserables SHOULD win. But it simply will not because you can't have a Catholic/Christian themed movie getting attention in the age of Obama.

I'm going to put my money either on Argo, another picture worthy of Best Picture, or Lincoln. I might even put more money on Lincoln because a leftist such as Spielberg redefining a Republican president has liberal Hollywood licking their chops. Watch what happens. Then come back here and rave me and say, "Geez Frog! You were right!"

    How did he redefine Lincoln?
  • Simmeri... Elephan... 2013/02/23 04:14:15

Well, just wait. They did it with MLK jr. They'll do it with Lincoln. Your question is fair. I don't think it was anything obvious but I had one eye closed watching for bias while watching this film.

Read thiis. Ben Shapiro can articulate this far better than I ever could. I'm very suspicious that all the Hollywood leftist blowhards are suddenly embracing Spielberg's Lincoln.

I haven't seen any of them, so I'm not really qualified to vote, but the only one I've heard my friends raving about was Argo.

Literally none of them. Haven't had time to or the money to go to movies lately, I'll rent them when they come out on DVD (I'm a very patient person). :)

It was a true edge-of-the-seat thriller--enjoyed it very much. Well done and believable--loved it. Don't think it will win, though. Suspect Amour will win, since the Academy has taken a liking to obscure love stories.

Zero Dark Thirty was the best! I'm seeing Silver Linings Playbook tonight, but I can't imagine that it will be better. Django Unchained was amazing too, as was Lincoln...I saw them all (except for SLP) and I almost don't care which one wins as long as it's not "Beasts of the Southern Wild" or "Amour"

Daniel Day Lewis is awesome in a great movie. I would say Zero Dark Thirty (excellent movie) would be my number 2 and Django Unchanied as my 3. I hope Christoph Waltz gets something for Django.

I still think Batman should be in there over Amour.

I guess that's funny. It had some of last years best reviews and was one of the best of 2012. No one even heard of Amour until it was nominated.

what is often a popular hit is not always a quality movie. I look for critically acclaimed. I think they got it right this year for Best Picture Actor and director. Maybe Batman in the future but I doubt it. The studios love it since it brings in 100's of millions in profits.

ikr he's amazing, he's one of the best directors out there but just isn't as well-known so therefore he'll less likely to be nominated
