Offended Over a Video Game: Are People Too Sensitive?

Are some people just looking for things to be offended about? Or does a North Carolina man have a valid beef with the game Portal 2?

In the new game, an adopted character is the butt of a couple of jokes. One of the main characters, Wheatley, says "Alright, fatty. Adopted fatty. Fatty, fatty, no parents." Another character then says "For the record, you are adopted, and that's terrible, but just stick with me."

Neal Stapel says he was playing with his adopted Chinese daughter when he heard the jokes, and he was outraged.

“If you're an adopted parent, it's literally the worst thing you could have possibly heard,” Stapel told a local news crew.

"It throws the question, the most ultimate question that child is ever going to have for you, and it just throws it right in your living room," he continued.

Stapel claims his daughter told him she didn't hear the joke.

Well, then, inviting a news team into your home so you could tell the world about it might not have been the way to go.

People have a choice over what they find offensive or not and while the comments in this game may be a little inappropriate I think calling them "offensive" seems a bit too melodramatic.

Maybe if Valve truly believed adoption was awful and meant it as truth, it would be offensive. But clearly the people complaining have never played Portal 2- Wheatley, who says Fatty fatty no parents, is an artificial intelligence core designed with the sole purpose of being the biggest idiot in the world. I don't think it can get any more obvious that you're not supposed to take him seriously. The dude freaking breaks a window and tells you he "Hacked the computer system" to open it. GlaDOS is the one that says being adopted is horrible and makes fun of you for having no parents, but she's a murderous and completely insane artificial intelligence core that killed everyone else in the entire laboratory, and hates you with a passion because you "Killed" her in the previous game. Of course she is going to say horrible things to you, and unless you value the opinions of dangerous psychopaths, you're not supposed to take her seriously either.

Oi, people need to suck it up sometimes. None of the jokes were meant to hurt anyone! I should know, I said them! It was all in my script. If they're mad at me for sayin' what was in my script, then they're a bit over-sensitive!

Waaay too sensitive. The character actually isn't adopted, she was abandoned by her parents. She was made fun of through the 1st Portal game. Get over yourself. Way to shelter your child too much.

"Daddy" irritated the hell out of me. Sorry darlin'.....sheltering child will not help. Try explaining what was going on? Bet he was more upset than his daughter was. What does that say?

Sure why not? The world in which we live is too violent, too insensitive, too immoral anymore. No one respects anyone else. Hell, you don't even respect that I have my opinion and that's all it is. You keep coming back to bother me. A little sensitivity and respect can go a long way towards making this world a better place.

Good bye to you... It very nearly feels like you're stalking me. You're attacking me on two different topics on this site. Ba'bye Control Freak.

It really is amazing that some people can't just let it be and allow others their viewpoint. Control freaks tend to be relentless thinking that any other viewpoint is stupid and they are going to force that change even if it kills them....Really now, who's stupid?
  • Ara Victoria 2013/03/09 02:37:04

It's over-sensitive because of the context of the insults- the character who calls you "Fatty fatty no parents" is an artificial intelligence core who was created to be the biggest idiot who ever lived. Throughout the entire game everything he says is hilariously stupid, and so is this. It can't get any more obvious that you are in no way supposed to take him seriously. The other character who makes fun of you for being adopted is GlaDOS, and she is a criminally insane, homicidal artificial intelligence core who killed everyone else in the entire laboratory, and hates you and wants to kill you because you "Killed" her in the last game. Of course she's going to say horrible things to you, and unless you take advice from homicidal maniacs, you're not supposed to take her seriously either. If a sane, intelligent person in the game seriously told you that adoption is bad and Valve (the company that made the game) really believed that, then it would be justified to be offended.

This is life. Move on from it. Sitting around and complaining about some words said...get over it! Why fight to get your point across? Don't play the game if you don't like what was in it. PERIOD. The END. Moving on.....

    My daughter is 3. Why?
  • Victoria Phant4sy 2011/05/29 19:43:53
    Victoria
Why? Because your daughter is only 3, she hasn't been exposed to the kind of cruelty that exists in school. Your protective instincts haven't truly been challenged until someone you don't know strikes out at your kid. What makes it worse is when there is next to nothing you can do about it. My daughter just graduated from high school yesterday. I've lost count of how many times over the last years I've wanted to go and pull teeth out of someone because of how she was treated or a word that was said. I've tried to teach her how to deal with children her age, only stepping in when needed. With adults, there have been times when I've had to step up. I know of one woman that is currently being taken to court because she was being too sensitive/protective, she crossed the line though. A father bringing attention to this video game may seem like an over-reaction, but you really can't bash a guy for loving his kid. In this guy's situation it's doubly hard as a parent. She's 1. adopted 2. she's Asian and doesn't look like her parents. Those 2 things make a parent even more protective beyond the norm. My daughter isn't adopted, so I wouldn't like the game, but I wouldn't have called in a news team. But I can understand his position.

NO ONE was striking out his kid. Get over the game and move on. That's what's wrong with people. They hold onto petty things. It's a game. A lot of games have graphic material. If that was the case, he should have played the game before he played it with his daughter. The games are put other there. Whether or not someone choses to play them is their own decision. Someone always wants to place the blame on someone else. I love my kid too, and I am NOT going to shelter her. OR blame others for her feelings or my own. Everyone thinks differently then then the next person. Unless if someone was intentionally trying to hurt me or one of my own, I pay no mind. Life is too short!

I agree with you on two points. 1. He should have previewed the game first and this could all have been avoided or not. For all I know, he would have made a stink anyway. 2. All of us have our viewpoint and I'm not trying to yours, even though many have tried to force their viewpoint on me to the point of badgering, which is just plain wrong. I was just curious and I guessed right. Not here to fight unlike many other sodaheads.

Difference between a conservative and a liberal.

Conservative finds it offensive, and refuses to see it again.

Liberal finds it offensive, it needs to have a law against it.

Ohhhhhhh the humanity! Jaysus Kee-riste!!! I sit here with my blood boiling over most of this "offended" by everybody business. God dammit, when will these people stop! I don't give turd one about liberal, conservative or what EVER. This ultra sensitivity is like dope; once you go that way, you can't stop and it becomes more and more frivolous by the minute. Sensitive, hyper-offendable,snivling, wimpy, politically correct douchebags. They should all be slapped around and told to shut the f#ck up. If they don't, time for another beating.

Dad, I don't think your daughter would be offended and your blowing up of the situation is far worse than the minor irritation that may or may not have been absorbed by your sensitive little brainchild. Checked into plastic bubbles for you and your kids lately? Penis head.

Man that's how it all begins. It's just a pill, and just for the health of the mother.....then you end up with partial birth abortions.

Video games aren't supposed to be taken too seriously. Sure there can be violence, but as a parent, the parent's role is to moderate a child's exposure to media and just talk to them about it so they understand it better. Not full on oppose it and judge all videogames because of just one. Still though, jokes on adopted people shouldn't have been put in a video game.

seriously, Wheatley, the guy who says fatty fatty no parents is an artificial intelligence core built to be the biggest idiot who ever lived- and yes, that is exactly what they tell you about him in the game. Yes, he says fatty fatty no parents, but it could not be made any more obvious in the game that you're not supposed to take anything he says seriously. The other person who makes fun of you is a homicidal and criminally insane computer core named GlaDOS who killed everyone else in the lab and hates you because you "Killed" her in the previous game. OF COURSE she is going to say horrible things. She also calls the main character (Who is pretty thin) fat constantly. You're clearly not supposed to take her insults seriously either, unless you like taking advice from homicidal maniacs.
