NY Post Writer Defends Racist Rant by Blaming Jay-Z: Who Is the Racist? (Phil Mushnick or Jay-Z)

Most people seem to like the Brooklyn Nets’ new logos and color scheme, but one New York Post sports columnist is definitely not a fan. Then again, maybe he just can’t stand the team’s part-owner, rapper Jay-Z.

To go along with their move to Brooklyn, the Nets are sporting a new look: a black-and-white color scheme, which pays homage to the old New York subway signage system, and two new primary logos. Jay-Z, who owns 1.5% of the Nets, played an instrumental role in their design—a fact that clearly makes NY Post writer Phil Mushnick uncomfortable.

Mushnick, who has long been a critic of Jay-Z’s role in the franchise, wrote in his “Equal Time” sports column:

“As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment? Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N------s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B----hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!”

And it didn’t stop there. As furor erupted over what many are calling his “racist rant,” Mushnick tried to turn the story around and pin the blame on Jay-Z.

He said, “Such obvious, wishful and ignorant mischaracterizations of what I write are common. I don't call black men the N-word; I don't regard young women as bitches and whores; I don't glorify the use of assault weapons and drugs. Jay-Z, on the other hand . . . Is he the only NBA owner allowed to call black men N---ers? Jay-Z profits from the worst and most sustaining self-enslaving stereotypes of black-American culture and I'M the racist? Some truths, I guess, are just hard to read, let alone think about.”

There are certainly legitimate points that can be made about the messages conveyed in hip hop, as well as situations that just cry out for satire, but we think that Mushnick missed the mark on both accounts.

What do you think SodaHeads? Who is the racist? Phil Mushnik or Jay-Z?

Mushnick's comments are valid about Jay-Z. He's not going after an entire race, just an idiot who uses racism to get rich.

Remember, this is the rapper who proclaimed "his president is black" and makes rap songs about "n******s, Bi****, whor***, drugs, guns, hating the police and other vile things, so he can't cry about racism when he is a race baiting purveyor of hate.

The columnist WAS trying to point that out-as an ironic device-and should have phrased it better while STILL making the point that jayz PERPETUATES the stereotype, then cried foul when it bites him in the ass.

Phil Mushnick was simply way out of line with those over-the-top comments. He made a crazy fool of himself.

Only a racist would pull racism out of nowhere (a logo) and perpetuate racial stereotypes.

I agree that Jay-Z is misogynistic and ignorant, but he has not done anything racist so far.
99.9% of the time- whites who can't wait to say the n-word are racist.

Whoops, I meant to vote Phil Mushnick. Anyway, as I was scrolling down, I looked at that logo for a LONG time and kept thinking, "What's wrong with it..?" Then when I got to the "black and white color scheme" explanation, I had to re-read it, an then read it again. Cue the theme from the Twilight Zone. This dude is out there.

I don't like Jay Z personally but this Phil has some serious issues. He needs to be fired before he further ruins the reputation of the New York Post.

Do not be deluded, The New York Post will never be shut down over one mildly recist columnist. See, cause that would truly show the ignorance in this hate game we all keep playing, wether we want to or not.

I did not say the New York post should or would be shut down. All I said was they should fire Phil before they start aquiring a bad reputation. Not many companys want a racist lunatic representing them.

I know ya didn't. I doubt they will think much about a few cancelled subscriptions that this "might" cause. I agree he should be reprimanded for his actions. I belive that people who make racist statements, by law, ought to have to on their own time appear before the offended and apologize.

Look, I'm with you on the whole racism isn't racist thing but if you read the article it would be pretty clear that in this case the typical white racist stereotype applies.

You're right. I was just expressing my own non-on-point views. During the Civil Rights era, Jews & Blacks often walked hand in hand on the various Freedom Marches. Somewhere during the last 50 odd years that cooperation evaporated completely. It doesn't surprise me at all that Mushnick wrote what he did. This is no love lost between the folks.

Mushnick makes a very valid point.
"That's OUR word", and other retarded sophistry used by blacks to defend their racial slur-laden lyrics should be bitch-slapped, even if only in a rhetorical sense.
Jay can makes millions pimping it, but Mushnick is a bigot for calling him out on it?

All he had to say was, I don't like the new logo.. why bring the N word into it? There was no need for such derogatory language and then turn around and say "who me racist".... YES YOU...!!!!

He obviously used the opportunity to express his disgust with racial pimping.
Which is how Jay-Z got the money to buy into the team. And the whole black and white theme does seem divisive.
I agree with him on both counts.
