NY Post Writer Defends Racist Rant by Blaming Jay-Z: Who Is the Racist? (Phil Mushnick or Jay-Z)

Most people seem to like the Brooklyn Nets’ new logos and color scheme, but one New York Post sports columnist is definitely not a fan. Then again, maybe he just can’t stand the team’s part-owner, rapper Jay-Z.

To go along with their move to Brooklyn, the Nets are sporting a new look: a black-and-white color scheme, which pays homage to the old New York subway signage system, and two new primary logos. Jay-Z, who owns 1.5% of the Nets, played an instrumental role in their design—a fact that clearly makes NY Post writer Phil Mushnick uncomfortable.

Jay Z Brooklyn Nets
Mushnick, who has long been a critic of Jay-Z’s role in the franchise, wrote in his “Equal Time” sports column:

“As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment? Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N------s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B----hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!”

And it didn’t stop there. As furor erupted over what many are calling his “racist rant,” Mushnick tried to turn the story around and pin the blame on Jay-Z.

He said, “Such obvious, wishful and ignorant mischaracterizations of what I write are common. I don't call black men the N-word; I don't regard young women as bitches and whores; I don't glorify the use of assault weapons and drugs. Jay-Z, on the other hand . . . Is he the only NBA owner allowed to call black men N---ers? Jay-Z profits from the worst and most sustaining self-enslaving stereotypes of black-American culture and I'M the racist? Some truths, I guess, are just hard to read, let alone think about.”

There are certainly legitimate points that can be made about the messages conveyed in hip hop, as well as situations that just cry out for satire, but we think that Mushnick missed the mark on both accounts.

What do you think SodaHeads? Who is the racist? Phil Mushnik or Jay-Z?

He got nad over black and white and used the N word? I'm black, and I don't even use it. It's quite disrespectful.

You just have to love the first amendment, and the freedom that our founders gave us to make public spectacles out of ourselves.

Meant to say neither.. Phil was quoting Jay Z, if people don't like the use of the N word than people should be up in arms about Jay Z using it too in my opinion. It shouldn't matter what colour you are when it comes to a word that's supposed to be offensive to a race.

I don't blame this guy for hating Jay Z, I don't like him or his music either.

No he was not quoting . Saying a word that someone said in different context is not quoting . You people will defend thing, even if you have to change the meaning of a word.

How about why did you boy inject race into this in the first place ? Most actors use swear words in their line of work , do you think they should be attacked for that.

If it was in context can you show me where Jay-z suggest that we called a team New York N-.. Just because someone case a word that someone else says does not mean that it is in context .

Funny you suggest that I am racist.

Jr. You are what two years older than me? If you call someone Jr. should should at least understand what a quote is , and what context is . I am sure that you have used the term dog before . So would it be ok if someone called your mother a dog ?

Also when you suggest a team name should be changed to N- you are interjecting race.

How is calling someone a N-- not injecting race into something? Speaking about picking up a dictionary have you learn what the words, quote and context means yet.

Since you don't see the problem , it seems to highlight that you don't understand context . Since you are still dancing around how using that term at all is not injecting race in to the conversation.

I'm not the one dancing around that term.

I'm the one throwing it in your face, and asking what the difference is between someone who looks like me using it, and someone who looks like you using it.

You are the one dancing around that context.
  • Joey Met 2012/05/07 16:08:33
    Joey
I did not say you were dancing around the term I said you were dancing around how using that is not using race. You know what whats funny , many fat people can call each other fat , yet would have a different reaction if a fit person called them fat. Many country people , call themselves a rednecks , yet if I called them a redneck they would be about red to right. When call there friends B and even themselves that at times but when a man or someone that they don't like does it there is an issue . But people normally don't complain about these situation why is that ?

And it is clear that you don't don't about much about Jay-z if out think that is the only thing his music is about .

So now you are suggest that N- has nothing at all to do with race. You got to be kidding me .

    Lets look at your facts.

To your first state .. I am not a fan of Jay-z
To your next fact he did more than just say a word.
To your last face it seems like word racist is another word that you have hard time understanding .
  • Met Joey 2012/05/07 17:34:10
    Met
What did he do besides say a word? He wrote an article, by very definition all he did was write words down.

If you think black people should be able to do something white people shouldn't be able to... You're racist by default.

it's not me having contextual and racial issues.

it's you. Struggling to realize that you're a racist, were likely raised by racists, and live in a racist community that accepts you for being a racist.

Again, that's not a ME problem.
