No refunds or rain checks for U.S. Open ticketholders
Posted at 3:16 PM by Michael Walker Jr. | Categories: Bethpage Black

Here's some mud in the face for fans who paid $100 for tickets to today's rain-soaked opening round at Bethpage Black only to have play suspended after three hours: No rain check, no refund, no exception.

According to the USGA's Rand Jerris, Thursday's abbreviated round -- in which the lead group made it to only the 11th hole -- counts as a day of golf and the USGA will not issue refunds or rain checks. While the tournament could finish on Monday due to forecasts for continued rain, Jerris said the USGA has not made a decision regarding possible tickets for Monday. However, Thursday tickets will not be honored and fans can throw them away, Jerris said.

Jerris could not answer questions about how the no-refund decision was made or if there is a set number of holes or time on the course that constitutes a "day" of golf. He referred those question to USGA higher-ups who were not immediately available for comment. The extensive fine print on the back of the ticket does not cover the USGA's rain-delay policies, and no clear explanation of rain-check policy is contained in the USGA's online spectator guide.

If people stop paying money to watch someone else play a game, then they wouldn't lose money.

But if you pay to watch someone play a game, and you don't get to see anyone play the game, then have you gotten what you paid for? If you go to the movies, buy your ticket, and then they announce that they're not showing the film, do you get a refund?

because their tickets can't be used on the open day because its the new final round (monday) smells like a screw over live and learn.

It's very upsetting and makes me a little angry that the U.S. Open can't do the right thing and refund these people. After all, they make a killing each year at every site they are at! Being a good golfer and a decent fan, if this happened to me and my family and friends, I wouldn't ever attend again! See ya, PGA!! Get a grip on your greed!!

It's disappointing that they are not giving refunds, but that is the way golf tournaments usually go. They can't let the Thursday people come back today, because there are already 50,000 Friday tickets, and the course could not handle that many more spectators.

refunds golf tournaments thursday people 50000 friday tickets handle spectators

My father in law was a professional golfer so I was basically forced to learn the game when I married into the family. It's a frustrating game to play, and apparently even those in the gallery can suffer as well.

If you look at the top picture, I think the 23rd umbrella from the bottom is me! It was a truly messy day, but golfers know that you always try to play through. I got there about 8:30, and they stopped play at 10:16. They made the right decision to stop play:

umbrella messy golfers play 830 stopped play 1016 decision play

I'm disappointed in the USGA for not giving refunds. However, it is consistent with the way these issues are usually handled.
