Comic-Con International in San Diego is months away, but there's almost always some kind of fan conventions going on now that Dallas, New York City, Baltimore, and Phoenix each have their own event. The New York Comic Con event, which boasted an amazing 96,000 attendees in 2010 (compared to San Diego's 130,000), is well under way, and so far video games are getting the spotlight.
New York-based culture blog Ology has been catching the action first-hand, and they've narrowed their favorites video game reveals to five essential picks: "The Secret World," "Street Fighter X Tekken," "Mass Effect 3," "Star Wars: The Old Republic," and of course "Batman: Arkham City."
Each of these games brings something completely different to the table. "The Old Republic" is rumored to be a massively multiplayer online Star Wars game in the vein of "World of Warcraft" -- which sounds like a lot of fun in theory, but then so did "Final Fantasy XI." Meanwhile, "The Secret World" will approach the MMO genre without the shackles of an existing franchise, and attempt to experiment with alternate reality gaming, where the real world becomes integrated into the gaming experience via phone, media, or social networking.

"Street Fighter X Tekken" is pretty self-explanatory. If you're a fighting gamer, you'll know what to expect and why it should be awesome; if not, it's just another arcade fighting game you can button-mash to get your aggression out. "Mass Effect 3" should be a pretty straight-forward sequel, as well. Intergalactic third-person warfare at its finest.
But "Batman" is still the star of the show, and if you've played "Arkham Asylum" you know why. It's like "Splinter Cell" with batarangs and a cape.
