The daytime talk show is big business. For decades, the kings and queens of mid-day fare from Oprah Winfrey to Phil Donahue to Ellen DeGeneres have been entertaining housewives and college students in the afternoon hours. The market has become more and more saturated in recent years and every season, there are new chatters testing the waters.
This fall is no exception. Perhaps one of the most anticipated offerings comes from ex-“CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric, whose show “Katie” hits the airwaves on September 10. Jeff Probst took his name out of the running as Kelly Ripa’s co-host when he announced his own show that will also debut the same day. Time will tell if he can outwit, outlast and outplay on a show other than “Survivor.”
Ricki Lake is at it again. “The Ricki Lake Show,” not to be confused with “Ricki Lake,” which ran from 1993 to 2004, will be a little less Jerry Springer and a little more Oprah. Comedian and radio host Steve Harvey is bringing his humorous look at real issues to TV in a self-titled talk show and British presenter Trisha Goddard will expand from her guest spots on “Maury” to her own eponymous series. Which new talk show host will you most likely watch?
