New Study Says Violent Video Games Can Be Good for You: Believable or Bogus?

For years, people have argued that violent video games are bad for society because they can increase aggression and violence among youth. But, according to a new study by Keele University, playing violent games may actually help you by increasing your pain tolerance.

The study by Keele tested 40 volunteers and found that they had a higher threshold for pain after playing a first-person shooter game, as opposed to a non-violent golf game. Each group played for 10 minutes and had their pain tolerance tested by placing one hand in ice-cold water to see how long they could last without withdrawing. The study states that 65 percent of the participants kept their hands in ice water longer after playing the violent video game compared to the golf-playing group of volunteers.

So how does this work? Apparently, while playing violent video games your body goes into a form of 'fight or flight' mode. Your heart rate increases, awareness rises, and you are desensitized from at least some pain, since you are essentially playing a simulation of a dangerous and violent scenario one would realistically never want to be a part of in real life. As a result, the study suggests that violent video games may be a helpful way to cope with pain in the short term. Whether you believe the study's effectiveness or not, shooting game fans now have a new excuse to keep playing on.

Yes, people are stupid, but that has nothing to do with pain tolerance, or with video games.

playing video games does NOT increase pain tolerance, it migth build a very fake sense of "im togher than you" but thats very false as playing video games does not make you a better fighter or better real life person!

according to Darcia Narvaez, Ph.D. violent video games have a very negative impact on kids. violent video games support rewards for being violent. and violence is teh last thing we need in todays society! kids have simple minds and feel the need to "associate" things with other things and when at a young age they play games that are violent they will then "associate" violence with "reward". and often these kids start practising these violent behaviors in real life. habbits we are creatures of habbits, what we do often will result in what we do always, kids who spend hours on violent video games, will likely portray violence in real life.

according to neuroscience violent video games and movies reduce cognitive brain activity.

I know more about video games than any of you adults do. I honestly think you guys should learn to ease up and have some fun. Seriously let kids be kids, just tell them what's wrong and what's right. The problem isn't the video game, it's the environment in which the kids grow up in. I play video games all the time, I'm perfectly healthy, I have no desire to intentionally harm anyone, and I have manners.
I will check out the links though. Thank you.

teaching kids to be violent is NOT letting kids be kids! it robs them of what it means to be a kid if you ask me!

now im nonly talking about violent games, and of course it won't make everyone violent. but it does harm

That's the thing though, tell your kids it's wrong to hurt people. I mean if your kid thinks that he or she can kill people just like in Grand Theft Auto, then they are stupid, and need to go to a better school. I'd say look at where the shootings, and violent acts occur then look at the literacy rate of that area and the literacy rate of the individual, that as well as bullying issues.

    the term is "sublimation"

the desired action is replaced with something else. instead of taking it out on a real person, they could take it out on a imaginary creature. It makes people better to punch a pillow, or a wall, too, without hurting the person who deserves it.

and completely ignore events where people act like they are playing violent video games but in real life
  • TKramar democoach 2012/09/17 21:04:16 (edited)
    TKramar
the video game is there to replace the real life actions, not to inspire them. would you rather have people blowing away imaginary digital creations, or real people? Take away their outlet, and you'll have more violence against people.

thats bull! because video games where not created to reduce violence, they are created to feed emotions or destroy them! and violent video game creators know that full well! thats why many murde rgames today are as realistic as possible! and why millitary uses it! mecause it increases violent behavior!
  • TKramar democoach 2012/09/17 21:09:23

It's not good to just bottle things up, if you don't give people some sort of outlet, they'll explode. Whether it's gory movies, or violent video games, we've always had them.

Hell, should we get rid of sports like hockey and football because it "inspires violence"? What's more violent than a good tackle? Some MMA crap, like they're doing now and calling sport? It's a sublimation of the normal violent tendencies.
  • democoach TKramar 2012/09/17 21:16:22

so yours yaing 200 years ago people where more violent then they are now? PLEASE! they had no violent video games or movies! so by your logic society was all violence back then as they didn't have video games to release anger!

we've always had gory movies or violent video games? roflol tvs weren't even around 150 years ago! how th ehell wher evideo games around forever?

talking to friends or family is teh best way of settling anger, talkign to the one who angered you is the best medicine, violent video games just fuels the anger.

i personnally hate hockey! "i went to a fight and a hockey game broke out" roflol!

being part of martial arts teaches you respect, im in kung fu, and the entire message in their, is peace! and love! and using defense in purely defense circumstances! violent video games teaches starting the violence!

    No more...and no less.

Violence is part of human nature. I'd rather see it sublimated into something else than against people. Hit a wall, punch a pillow, shoot a digitized bad guy. I'm opposed to guns.

Being part of martial arts gets you killed, because you THINK you know how to fight, but wind up pulling your punches. Also, the other person isn't going to stand there and wait for you to finish your move. Real life is a much better teacher.

violence is thought! and like i said video games where not aroudn forever, and violence has not gone down, if anythign violence is much worse today then it ws 100 years ago! if that doesn't say anythign i don't know what will! besides most play those games for "fun" rather then anger management!

no being part of martail arts can help you stay alive! i am in king fu, and they teach go in and don't stop till you disable the othe rguy or he literally retreats! but they also teach to be respectful of everyone! i know lot of martial arts wait till a punch is given defend and attack and repeat. but many also teach that if one attacks you to jump right in and end the fight!

i was downtown once, and some guy obviously was trained in martial arts, and another guy was just mean and acted all tough and all, that guy swung at the martia arts guy he deflected the pucnh and thrw a kick, after that the guy who acted all though only used cuss words, but did nothing more! martail arts does not get you killed!
  • TKramar democoach 2012/09/18 10:14:09
    TKramar
In a "training" scenario, you're not supposed to injure the other person. You're going to revert back to that on the street, and pull your punches.

Life has not gotten any more, or any less violent--but violent video games give people an outlet. Better they kill zombies on a computer screen, than kill innocent bystanders in a street somewhere. I can guarantee that killing computer-generated characters is much safer for society at large, than spree killers.
  • democoach TKramar 2012/09/18 13:09:15

so your saying video games have been around for ever.

you say video games is more real life then martial arts.
    (thats pretty twisted thinking!)
you think spree killers aren't around because of these video games? ROFLOL maybe you should look at the news more often!

btw your not in martial arts you can't say anythign about it! i am and i can say your wrong!

your arguments are invalid, because a spree killers are still here, but you claim people only use video games instead. you say martail arts is no good, yet i have seen an instance where it saved someones life! worst of all you have said it has been around forever! get your facts straight!

Where did I say that? Any of that?

You need to work on your comprehension skills.

If I kick your ass, it is because I have more experience in actual fights. I grew up smaller than my peers, and frequently found myself in fights because people thought I would be an easy target, and I had to prove them wrong.

    I'm not pulling my punches.

    TKramar
No, I never said that. I did say humans have always been violent, it's a normal part of human nature to be violent.

Ah, I see what you're saying....okay, while we've always had the tendency to be violent, we've also always sought another outlet for that violence. Many sports come from a violent background.
  • democoach TKramar 2012/09/19 15:44:32

and i don't watch those those sports either! im a gymnastics/snowboarding fan.

the only "violnt" sport i do is kung fu, and it teaches not to be violent!

has violence gone down because of these video games? no! in fact studies show that kids playing these games spike these violent behaviors!
  • TKramar democoach 2012/09/19 19:14:03

Violence is a part of human nature, it's not going to go up or down, it's a constant.

no its not a constant. you seem to be a violent person! its a surprise your not in jail yet, lol!

and if you where right that people are violent. then murder wouldn't be a problem, after all we are all violent right?
  • TKramar democoach 2012/09/19 21:16:37

Self defense is generally not something they jail you for. And I don't see it as a problem, except that people also, in general, want to live. Except for those with suicidal tendencies, like those who play at fighting, and have no idea what real life is like.
