For years, people have argued that violent video games are bad for society because they can increase aggression and violence among youth. But, according to a new study by Keele University, playing violent games may actually help you by increasing your pain tolerance.
The study by Keele tested 40 volunteers and found that they had a higher threshold for pain after playing a first-person shooter game, as opposed to a non-violent golf game. Each group played for 10 minutes and had their pain tolerance tested by placing one hand in ice-cold water to see how long they could last without withdrawing. The study states that 65 percent of the participants kept their hands in ice water longer after playing the violent video game compared to the golf-playing group of volunteers.
So how does this work? Apparently, while playing violent video games your body goes into a form of 'fight or flight' mode. Your heart rate increases, awareness rises, and you are desensitized from at least some pain, since you are essentially playing a simulation of a dangerous and violent scenario one would realistically never want to be a part of in real life. As a result, the study suggests that violent video games may be a helpful way to cope with pain in the short term. Whether you believe the study's effectiveness or not, shooting game fans now have a new excuse to keep playing on.

I will check out the links though. Thank you.
now im nonly talking about violent games, and of course it won't make everyone violent. but it does harm
the desired action is replaced with something else. instead of taking it out on a real person, they could take it out on a imaginary creature. It makes people better to punch a pillow, or a wall, too, without hurting the person who deserves it.
Hell, should we get rid of sports like hockey and football because it "inspires violence"? What's more violent than a good tackle? Some MMA crap, like they're doing now and calling sport? It's a sublimation of the normal violent tendencies.
we've always had gory movies or violent video games? roflol tvs weren't even around 150 years ago! how th ehell wher evideo games around forever?
talking to friends or family is teh best way of settling anger, talkign to the one who angered you is the best medicine, violent video games just fuels the anger.
i personnally hate hockey! "i went to a fight and a hockey game broke out" roflol!
being part of martial arts teaches you respect, im in kung fu, and the entire message in their, is peace! and love! and using defense in purely defense circumstances! violent video games teaches starting the violence!
Violence is part of human nature. I'd rather see it sublimated into something else than against people. Hit a wall, punch a pillow, shoot a digitized bad guy. I'm opposed to guns.
Being part of martial arts gets you killed, because you THINK you know how to fight, but wind up pulling your punches. Also, the other person isn't going to stand there and wait for you to finish your move. Real life is a much better teacher.
no being part of martail arts can help you stay alive! i am in king fu, and they teach go in and don't stop till you disable the othe rguy or he literally retreats! but they also teach to be respectful of everyone! i know lot of martial arts wait till a punch is given defend and attack and repeat. but many also teach that if one attacks you to jump right in and end the fight!
i was downtown once, and some guy obviously was trained in martial arts, and another guy was just mean and acted all tough and all, that guy swung at the martia arts guy he deflected the pucnh and thrw a kick, after that the guy who acted all though only used cuss words, but did nothing more! martail arts does not get you killed!
Life has not gotten any more, or any less violent--but violent video games give people an outlet. Better they kill zombies on a computer screen, than kill innocent bystanders in a street somewhere. I can guarantee that killing computer-generated characters is much safer for society at large, than spree killers.
you say video games is more real life then martial arts.
(thats pretty twisted thinking!)
you think spree killers aren't around because of these video games? ROFLOL maybe you should look at the news more often!
btw your not in martial arts you can't say anythign about it! i am and i can say your wrong!
your arguments are invalid, because a spree killers are still here, but you claim people only use video games instead. you say martail arts is no good, yet i have seen an instance where it saved someones life! worst of all you have said it has been around forever! get your facts straight!
You need to work on your comprehension skills.
If I kick your ass, it is because I have more experience in actual fights. I grew up smaller than my peers, and frequently found myself in fights because people thought I would be an easy target, and I had to prove them wrong.
I'm not pulling my punches.
Ah, I see what you're saying....okay, while we've always had the tendency to be violent, we've also always sought another outlet for that violence. Many sports come from a violent background.
the only "violnt" sport i do is kung fu, and it teaches not to be violent!
has violence gone down because of these video games? no! in fact studies show that kids playing these games spike these violent behaviors!
and if you where right that people are violent. then murder wouldn't be a problem, after all we are all violent right?
i'd rather read somethign uplifting! you sound like you might be emo
you sure act like one1
