New Reality Show: I'm Hotter Than My Daughter

While America enjoys its fair share of reality shows that require contestants to leave any possible morals or dignity at the door, what's happening across the ocean is far worse. A new BBC show titled I'm Hotter Than My Daughter laughs in the face of parents hoping to raise well-adjusted and confident young girls. The 30-minute program, which premiers tomorrow, pits sexily clad mothers against their more modest teenage daughters in a style showdown, the loser receiving a makeover.

This was the show's casting call that apparently drew enough contestants for at least six episodes: "BBC Three is searching for the mums of today who are younger, hipper,
more attractive and more independent than ever before! Do you and your
daughter share clothes? Do people often mistake you for sisters? Or are
people amazed to discover your real age? If this sounds like you and
you would like the opportunity to have a fun makeover, then please get
in touch."

Don't be fooled by its deceptively innocent wording. The SunUK spoke to three pairs of contestants and the mothers' lack of concern for how their clothing choices impacted their daughters is down right disturbing.

Take Jessica Letheren, 17, who says, "Mum has hogged the limelight for years now. It's time for her to
move over and give me a chance to shine. Now I am 17, I thought it would be me getting the attention, but all the boys
at school comment on how she is hotter than me. I want the boys to fancy me
and not her." Meanwhile, her 42-year-old mother, Allison, says, "I love it when people think Jess and I are
sisters. It's really flattering. Obviously, I can see how Jess might get
embarrassed too."

Another case is Kobie, 18, who shares a disgraceful story about her mother, Sharon Hunte, 40. "She's constantly embarrassing me like
that - like on my 15th birthday when we went in a limo to a restaurant
with all of my friends. She was leaning out of the window of the car
poking her bum out, then after a few glasses of wine at the restaurant
she got on the table and started singing 'Don't you wish your mumma was
hot like me.'" Sharon's defense of her flamboyant appearance: "I just feel empty if I am covered up as I don't get the attention I love. I thrive on." Did I mention Kobie is not Sharon's youngest child? She also has a four-year-old daughter.

In what seems like an effort to justify BBC's decision to air this demoralizing program, the company's commissioning editor Harry Lansdown told Digital Spy: "This is a fresh
format that goes to the heart of competitive relationships, not only
between mothers and daughters, but also siblings and best friends and
I’m sure the makers of Snog, Marry, Avoid will make it a fun watch."

I don't get the Snog, Mary, Avoid reference, but what I do understand is that the BBC believes it's healthy, entertaining, not to mention "fun" to watch young girls desperate for their mothers to grow up and act responsible so that they can be the adolescents they deserve to be.

Would you watch this show or ban it out of principle? This is one I'm hoping doesn't spread its wings to find success in the U.S.

Mothers should WANT their daughters to be more, think more, feel more...than :little sex-pot dolls"...NOT parading themselves in a shallow, disgusting freak-show of a competition AGAINST their child!! FRIGGING DISGUSTING!!

It is all about the money. Disfunctional family exposing their daughter for entertaiment.
Boycott the show. I think it is a waste of time.

People will do anything to be on tv. They don't care if they are embarrassing themselves or their daughters. All for a few minutes of fame. Terrible.

ok...when will this (unrealistic) Reality Show craze end? I'm ready for it to be buried. The concept for this show is downright degrading to women...and how will these daughters develop their self esteem by competing with their mother in order to be sexy or beautiful?

That's awful! Shouldn't parents want their kids to do better than they did, not worse?
  • affinity_of_time 2010/02/05 02:40:35
That's horrible. But I guess nay daughter who would let her mother pull her into it instead of refusing shares the blame. The daughter could always tell her mother no. Just saying....

Good point. But though these mothers humiliate their daughters, their girls might still look up to them. It may be hard for them to say no.
