NEW MUSIC NOW > Meet Fiona Apple (Again): Who Are You Listening to This Week?

SodaHead Music 2012/06/15 15:00:00
Meet SodaHead's favorite artist of the week! Last week, we introduced Los Angeles-based indie pop band Capital Cities. This week, we're actually introducing... er, reintroducing an artist who's been absent from the music scene since 2005. Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Fiona Apple is known for taking long hiatuses between albums, and her relative instability. But her world-class talent is undeniable, and she's back for more with "The Idler Wheel..."

First, a little background. Apple first rose to fame in 1996 with her debut album, "Tidal," which she started recording when she was just 18 years old. Within two years, her breakout single "Criminal" took the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, securing her a place in musical history. But in 2000, not long after her second album, she was on the verge of retiring. She's only released a single album since then, 2005's "Extraordinary Machine."

Now she's back with a brand new, highly anticipated album, set for release on June 19. The full album title is "The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver of The Screw And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do." Whew. The title's length and obscurity resembling her equally strange and evocative lyrics. The album's lead single, "Every Single Night," is a vivid glimpse into the heart and soul that forged those mysterious words. Check out the video below, and let us know who you're listening to this week. Feel free to post audio clips and videos. We want to hear!

You!

I actually like the classical and folk elements more than the metal, but i do like metal. I don't like rap-jazz although i tried it and it sounded better than any of the same genre you would hear here. For the metal i will definitely look up some of the bands in there,

A basic Last.fm account is free. Now that I've been playing with the tags (listening to gypsy now) I'm finding all sorts of music. Tried Romanian folk earlier.

I'm not a rap fan either but that was different. Still not for me.

I will definitely use the site in the future, at the least to get new artists and then find more of their songs on youtube.

I jump between Last.fm and Youtube all the time. I've tried a few music sites but none of the others have Last.fm's international selection. Try "symphonic metal" and "folk metal" tags. Warning: you may run out of space on the iPod. :D You might want to check out "medieval" too since you like folk metal.

Really good, the Music was great. I usually don't like songs in English, unless they are not native English speakers (probably why i like it), I actually have no idea why it is that i don't like English songs from native English speakers lol.

Well Omnia is Dutch. They sing in many languages including a couple ancient ones though most songs are in English. Guess they're very good at singing without accents.

well i looked them up and saw they were dutch, which is probably why i like them, since English isn't their first language. Its really weird :/

Play Omnia radio on last.fm. You'll hear a lot of other really good bands.

This is pretty cool. I never used countries as search tags for music on Last.fm. I listen to all different kinds of music. Estonia as a tag is bringing up all sorts of stuff.

She's very talented, but a bit too morbid for me. I was a big fan of "Criminal" back in the day.
