Meet SodaHead's new favorite artist! Last week, we introduced Scottish singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé. This week, we want to introduce you to Capital Cities, a Los Angeles-based indie pop band who is receiving international recognition without the help of a label. From their 2011 debut self-titled EP to their latest release, "Kangaroo Court," the group's immediatly accessable sound has been a favorite of radio stations and music bloggers.
Believe it or not, central bandmembers Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian met on craigslist in 2008 through a mutual search for songwriting parters. By 2010 the duo had settled on Capital Cities, and had the project's first EP out within a year. The album's lead single, "Safe and Sound," received rave reviews and landed at the top of several independant music charts in the States and abroad.
In May, Capital Cities (now a six-piece band) released their sophomore EP, "Kangaroo Court." The title track is a catchy, danceable pop tune reminiscent of '70s psychedelia and disco, full of engaging synth affects and apropos trumpet melodies. Each instrument is well-integrated, tastefully restrained, and expertly mixed. The EP also includes a chilled-out remix of the song by Shook. Check out the original track below, and let us know what you've been listening to this week!

I PRESENTLY HEAR THE SOFT SOUNDS OF WIND CHIMES IN MY PINE TREE, CHIRPING BIRDS, AN OCCASIONAL CAR PASSING THROUGH THE HOOD AND LAX ACTIVITY IN THE FAR DISTANCE......THAT'S L.A., FOLKS. I'M MESMERIZED, AND I JUST CAN'T GET UP AND TURN ON THE OTHER MUSIC!reply - Hirnungah Mancandy 2012/06/08 18:16:00

+1Being in the industry, I'm just curious as to how one sells their work without a record label. Distributors will not put out an artist's work. They deal with the label, not the artist. The ONLY way I can figure this works is that this band, Capital Cities, is its own record label. The catch is that they are the only ones on the label. My biggest question is, where can you buy their music. Itunes and Beatport, the world's two largest music companies, will not take an individuals music. Gotta be on a label. Anyone know?reply - Fergie Ben 2012/06/08 19:00:56
+1You can buy their music on iTunes. Many unsigned bands are on iTunes.reply - Ben Fergie 2012/06/08 20:08:44
