NEW MUSIC NOW > Father John Misty: What Are You Listening to This Week?
New Music Now!

Meet SodaHead's new favorite artist! Last week, we introduced Cincinnati-based Walk The Moon. This week we've been digging Father John Misty, the solo project of J. Tillman, former drummer of a little band called Fleet Foxes. (Maybe you've heard of them?) Like Fleet Foxes, Tillman's solo project is folk-tinged indie rock. It's a relatively new project featuring a relatively new sound, even though he's been recording as a solo artist for nearly a decade.
Tillman got his start as a founding member of Saxon Shore in 2001, but didn't release his first solo album until 2005, while working at a bakery where he recorded his songs in the wee hours of the morning. Since then, he's released an average of about one album a year in addition to playing drums for Fleet Foxes and touring with the likes of David Bazan (formerly of Pedro the Lion) and Damien Jurado. It wasn't until May of this year that he unleashed his alter ego, Father John Misty.
Father John Misty's debut album, "Fear Fun," was preceded by the release of a music video for "Hollywood Cemetery Forever Sings" starring "Parks and Recreations" actress Aubrey Plaza. The song is mildly psychedelic, and the imagery shows Plaza's character jumping between apparently psychotic states in different contexts. The lyrics seem to depict a relationship haunted by worry and doubt, but the language is vague and hazy. Give the song a listen, and let us know what you're listening to this week!
