New England Patriots Caught Spying Was A Lie: Should the Boston Herald compensate the $750,000 the Patriots were fined?

The Boston Herald accused the New England Patriots of taping the New York Jets' coaches on the sidelines, which is against league rules. Due to this, the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell fined the Patriot's coach $500,000 and the team an additional $250,000, along with taking away their first-round draft pick for this year. However, the Boston Herald has recently apologized, saying the allegations were false.

As far as I have heard there was viedo taping of the coaches on the sidelines and they have since been destroyed. When and where was this story broken. I'd like to be able to find out the truth if I've been mislead.

The videotaping came to light after a camera was confiscated from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella while he was on the New York Jets' sideline during New England's 38-14 win last Sunday at Giants Stadium. Goodell will not change the outcome of the game.

Goodell said he had considered suspending Belichick but didn't "largely because I believe that the discipline I am imposing of a maximum fine and forfeiture of a first-round draft choice, or multiple draft choices, is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension."

There very well could be a bit more to the story. However, this is a perfect example of why you can't believe everything you read or hear. The press like to sensationalize everything for ratings/money.

This whole thing was blown way out of proportion from day one. They came back and won their next 17 games with no cameras on the field. The New England Patriots are a dynasty!

Pshh... the Patriots are guilty as sin dude. Just get over it and acknowledge the truth.... the Patriots were cheating.

If Bellichick misunderstood the rules... then why did Matt Walsh tell Roger Goodell that Bellichick instructed him to have a "Cover Story" for what he was doing? They KNEW it was illegal.

And just because nobody can find a tape of the Rams walkthrough doesn't mean it didn't happen. It just means the coverup was successful.

The money doesn't mean squat. It's the draft pick and the loss of credibility over this trumped up issue. Please notice people that the Patriots almost ran the table after BB stopped the practice. Please notice also that the initial warning went to every team not just the Patriots. So the claims that the Patriots SBs are tainted is baseless. BB continued doing it because he thought that his reasoning was within the Commissioner's guidelines. It obviously was not. People hated and were jealous of the Patriots because they were successful, something which is sadly rampant in the U.S. That Herald article was just piling on. The reporter was hoping to grab some of the spotlight from the issue. The reporter should be reprimanded for not fully vetting his claim.

The NFL acted on what a newspaper stated....even though the paper pointed the finger, it was the league that pulled the trigger....the league shoud refund the money and the Herald should keep its nose out of league business..........

The Pats shouldn't have been fined in the first place. Freedom of the press doesn't mean you can lie. Not only should the Pats be reimbursed but they should be given as least $500,000 if not more for the libel and whoever reported it should be jailed.........................

They screwed up, the least they could do is TRY and make it better... although, giving them the money isn't going to make much of a dent... they need to be promised first-draft pick next year, or something like that.
