Atlas Shrugged: Part 1
Fiercely Independent railroad tycoon Dagny Taggart determines to use innovative technology to revive her business, no matter what the personal cost.

Categories: Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Based on the controversial Ayn Rand novel Atlas Shrugged.

About the next part in the series:
After the box office failure of Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, there was some doubt as to whether or not any more of the proposed trilogy would be put into production. However, in a private debt sale in early 2012, the producers raised $16 million of the $25 million they sought,[3] enabling a budget larger than that of the first movie. The production company announced that Part 2 would be released to coincide with the U.S. general election season in fall 2012.[1]

A horrible film based on a book by the mother of modern conservatism. What a load of crap. This woman was insane and the people who follow her and believe her book is the new conservative bible are idiots.

Ayn, while somewhat hard read, truly understood the perils and reality of socialism/communism as she grew up in the Soviet Union and then moved to freedom as an adult.

In the movie, her lead characters were not bad people, not overly greedy or destructive. For all of the negative remarks about Ayn, the movie does not portray them so badly. in real life, many of the wealthy are much worse, more greedy, willing to destroy lakes and rivers and get people killed just to make a buck. In this movie the lead, at least Dagny, seemed to be concerned about the welfare of her workers.

    Remember two things:
1 - the movie was made after her death, and therefore without her express knowledge or permission

2- the movie is centered in present day US, the book is during some of the worst years of communism

We aren't there yet and most Americans have absolutely no idea how good they have it or how badly those in communist countries do.

Yes. As I heard it Ayn wanted wanted a say in the movie script but the producer told her no so she balked.

I watched The Fountainhead too, on Youtube. Not as much fun. Very tedious with the incessant need of the main character to have total control over his ideas, totally unyielding, and the other main character had to be based on Ayn herself. Loony as a toon. lol

I think the fountainhead was the book I read - it was years ago and it was agonizing getting through it. It takes quite a bit for me to refuse to finish a book - so I made it but it was awful. I was ready to murder and hack the main character into tiny, tiny, tiny little pieces by the end of the book. I doubt I'd enjoy the movie much more but it'd be interesting to see and at least it would be shorter.

But the wonder of capitalism is its effectiveness at parting fools from their money. While the book Atlas Shrugged was a wonderful story, it is difficult to see how the protaganist's long can be converted to a successful screen play. Without the content of these narratives, the story becomes rather trite.

The wonderful thing about capitalism, however, is that my opinion does not matter. Those with the money to make this money are free to make this movie....never forget, however, a fool and his money are easily parted. I am reasonably certain the producers, directors, and most of the actors in this movie will get paid while the bond holders have little chance of getting their principle back.

Not an epic special effects movie by any means, but I love a story with a message and the movie kept me in suspense as I have not read the book. I think the book would be too long for me to enjoy and the movie focuses on the love story between Dagny and Reardon, as well as a future world where the government has become oppressive and burdened with bureaucracy somewhat like America today, but definitely more like Soviet Russia, on which I assume Ayn based her book. I look forward to the next part.

I have not seen this movie, or read this book, but I have read other Ayn Rand books. What a nut job. Her preachy, nut job philosophy even ruined to Legend of the Seeker books.

Don't plan to see the films as I read the book years ago. Rand was a psycho atheist extremist who would be leading the right wing nuts if still alive. It was sheer poetic justice that for the last 8 years of her miserable selfish life she was forced to use the social programs of SS and Medicare that she hated.

Yeah, she loved her benzies. Funny how all the righty religious freaks and Catholic Paul Ryan can worship this stone cold atheist, and not be consummate hypocrites.

well, she may have professed atheism but there are hundreds of allusions to Christ in Atlas Shrugged with Galt playing the part of Jeebus.

She detested religions. Faith in a God is not compatible with reason and objectivism according to Rand.

I can't stand her either but her atheism wasn't the problem. God would not have fixed her - might have made her even worse. She was preachy enough.

Frankly I can't figure out what conservatives see in her - I found her painful to read and her characters self centered to the point of insanity. Then again - I guess maybe that's what conservatives see in her....

Being a serious fan of Atlas Shrugged (I reread it every year) I thought they did a very good job with the characters. I would have loved more content but it is a huge book and to depict it all would take a series of 10. This book was the original CULT book because so many people love it. My son (age 40 with his own business) keeps a copy on his desk for the times when he needs a boost from someone who thinks as he does.

I've never read the book, so I wanted to see the movie. I liked it and I can't wait for part 2, which I thin is to be released in October of this year, a buddy of mine who read the book said it's pretty close.

I consider it to be almost prophetic

Read the book it is a GREAT Book and the story is amazing not matter what anyone says. I think she was a brilliant woman and almost a prophet about what is happening in this country. My family is working to build a defense survival group of people with excellent abilities to go in to a very unpopulated area when the fall comes and start to build a new society of people who work and earn based on their skills. This country is headed for a fall and no matter how good Obama is I don't think there is a way to stop this down hill slide.

good luck to you and your group. I support these activities, preppers may end up being the keepers of what America should be.

I should be doing the same, but I'll probably be one of the 80% dead within the first few weeks.

If you are interested in reading a pretty good book, read "One Second After"

Thanks we are trying to be prepared. We already have a good medical supply, this year we have a huge garden and I hope to can and freeze a lot. My son is looking for a really big generator that operates on solar power. Guess you can tell we think we are near collapse. No one believes it can happen here but we do. I will look up your book thanks for the info.
