NBC Air Racist Commercial After Gabby Douglas Gold Medal: Is The Commercial Racist?

I think that was just a coincidence / unfortunate timing. And nobody would have read anything into the promo commercial if it had featured a female dog (a bitch) or a donkey (an ass). Anything can be misconstrued if people want to.

However, Bob Costas' comment was a bit strange: Why would Gabby only inspire African-American girls and not girls in general? If anything about this could be construed as racist, it is this unnecessary specifier.

It was a commercial for a new TV show, that's all it was. Of course the ( politically correct ) police force may see it otherwise !

I don't think the ad was meant to be racist, but the timing was definitely inappropriate. Whoever loaded that commercial into the slot should be fired, not for being racist, but for lacking the professionalism needed to do their job.

I saw it and thought OMG, this is the worst timing ever. Some things you just have to let go of and move on.

I hope it was just an untimely commercial. If it would had aired at any other time it would have been alright. So I'm going to assume it was just bad timing.

I don't see the racist connection with the commercial. I don't particularly like the repeated references to Gabby being the first African American to win the title. What the hell has that got to do with how hard she has trained? How physically talented a gymnast she obviously is, and her ability to remained mentally focused when other great athletes faltered? She is a member of a great American team, young women who performed as a team, not as individuals of one race, or another. It feels as though someone is subtle in their effort to try and diminish a great American victory. Of course other young African American girls (along with girls of every other race and nation) will be inspired by Gabby. That goes without saying. Gabby was inspired by Dominque Dawes, among other great gymnasts that came before her.
I'm not happy with Bob Costas reporting this time around.

If that commercial is real yes, but I didn't noticed it when I watched the Olympics yesterday. When I viewed it on SH I thought it was satire, I can't believe NBC would do that, I need more information.

Update: NBC as a whole has not carried it's network like a Faux No News, so based on some of the comments I've read, I guess this commercial is real and I have to give the network the benefit of the doubt. Someone showed bad judgement in running that ad right after Gabby win and I don't give a dam if the monkey is on a show.

Although I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt others don't have to and I do understand why they would of be offended. For those who completely dismiss why African Americans could get upset over this, I say to you, learn their history, put yourself in their shoes, then maybe you'll understand how that would be their initial reaction.

I choose to now think it was shear thoughtlessness in the timing of that commercial, because I've never view NBC as that kind of network. If you're someone who's not familiar with the network, you may not be so quick to give them a pass, so be tolerant and give them a break. In the end, as they learn more about NBC they may come to the same conclusion as I did.

Might have been a bit racist if they had a female monkey up there doing a flying squirrel but I don't think there is a black american male doing rings.

No...but I guarantee you that if the Olympics were being broadcast on a FOX channel...it would not be considered 'bad timing' or 'unfortunate'...it would be deemed 'purposeful' and 'racist'....people would be 'outraged' and somebody would have to lose their job....you can bet Sharpton and Jackson would be picketing and demanding

LOL, I saw the commentary and the commercial last night and never even thought of this. I think this is an overreach.

Many people obviously don't understand the association of monkeys, chimps, gorillas to African Americans. There's a history of African Americans being called or compared to these animals, so yes, if that commercial did happen that's one of the first things that could come to their mind. It's said, until you've been in someone else shoes, sometimes a person truly don't understand.

That's just bad timing.

Even with the tragically unfortunate timing, it's still a bit of a stretch to call it racist.

I think the timing was just horrible. If this comercial hadnt played after that announcement, no one would have had a problem.
