NBA May Allow Advertising on Uniforms: Is It a Good or Bad Idea?

The NBA's Board of Governors met this week to make rule changes. The league had a shortened season last year due to a collective bargaining dispute between the players and owners. The short season and increased expenses may have prompted the NBA's Board and Commissioner David Stern to consider supplementing their advertising revenues.

The NBA Board of Governor's announced it would consider allowing advertising on the uniforms in the 2013-2014 season. The commissioner said they would restrict the size of the patches. I worry that the size will increase as the league gets excited by the advertisers appetite for more.

The commission must worry that someday their jersey's will look like soccer jerseys. Non-professional soccer fanatics cannot recognize a team without first consulting a chart of advertisers. What do you think of the idea of advertisements on NBA uniforms?

What a joke. And it will be a bigger joke when someone buys a jersey with advertising, giving those companies free advertising.

Only if the player them-self gets a say on if the add goes on their jersey, and if the player gets a majority of the money paid for by the sponsor. Adds on jerseys are not a new thing for sports. Most sports with jerseys outside of the big 3 (football, basketball, and baseball) do this.

Examples: Soccer (some teams), Paintball, E-Sports, shooting sports, golf, rugby (some teams), extreme sports, Racing,.. ...etc.

Only a real basketball junkie watchs preseason. So he will probably not notice the advertising. And at preseason games, they don't have as many camera's so the TV shots will be far away.

Maybe they can start advertising for the Presidential race in 2016! That would take us through 4 seasons! LOL !

Not many people like ads. Why do you think ad-block plus is such a popular web browser addon, and why do you think people watch less TV now, and instead watch them on the internet? (hint.. ad control, or no ads)

The love for money destroys nations.

The different things in life that are either given to us for free or at cheaper costs are because of the sponsers, which are commercial ad. The whole world has gone commercial. Sometimes I wonder if some commercials are sponsered by other commercials to have it paid to get advertised. But I would not be surprised on that if they did. But also if you figure it right sports is getting paid from two different sides, one the people that attend the games and the commercial ads/sponsors. But yes it does depend on also of how popular those teams are and if people can afford the outrages prices for example like season tickets. Even concert tickets are more expensive than what the sports tickets are. But businesses say that it would be given to us a cheaper price if they are sponsered. I don't see where yet, especially getting tickets to concerts and games.

Spoiled players and owners are selfish enough. Every dollar more from advertising raises the retail prices we are paying. Red Bull and others will pass their costs onto to amateur athlete.

Sorry to break i to you, but that's not in the works. The idea behind it is to keep the ticket price going up as it normally does, and to also earn even more by singing minds with a brand name.

This is great. It is just another reason that American sports is corrupt. Look what money did to Penn State! The ads will let viewers know who the sell-outs are.

Absolutely not. I watch the game for the game and I don't want to watch players running around with jerseys so full of "advertisement patches" that you can't even tell what number they are. I'm sure the league can figure out other ways to increase their revenue. Do not soil those gorgeous jerseys! Besides wouldn't it cost more money to have all of those patches put on everyone's home and away jerseys?

This world is too commercialized as it is. Just look to the right of this page. (I try not to). Besides, it would just go from one ad to looking like a NASCAR vehicle.

Awful. As soon as this starts I'm done with the NBA.

European football has advertising because the nature of the sport prevents commercials from being used during televised events. The game doesn't stop. So they don't have access to that revenue.

Plus, the way they've been branded is different than North American teams.

The "Big Four" have access to commercial advertising and utilize it to the detriment of the game on the field/ice/court. Monotizing the main piece of brand identification for the team is crass.

At this point I consider Bud Selig the worst of the four commissioners. If this happens, Stern will easily jump to the top.

Maybe the adds will be for Bail-Bonds. That will help it's players.
