Natalie Portman’s Dior Ad Banned in UK: Should it Have Been?

Natalie Portman’s sultry new mascara ad for Dior has been banned in the UK. The Advertising Standards Agency, a watchdog organization for adverts in the UK, has banned it because editing has made Natalie’s eyelashes look unrealistically good.

Getty Images

Rival makeup brand L’Oreal filed a complaint saying that the advert "misleadingly exaggerated the likely effects of the product." An investigation by the ASA found that the image was originally meant to advertise lipstick, but was retouched in Photoshop when the decision was made to use it for mascara.

The ASA has ruled that the retouching is "directly relevant to the apparent performance of the mascara product being advertised," and that the ad “must not appear again in its current form." Do you think that this is a fair judgement?

No one should be able to manipulate an image to make their product better. Its lying.

Edit: it'd be ok to manipulate the eyelashes if it wasn't mascara and was for lipstick as originally intended.

Wow...good for them! I wish we had laws like that here. The advertisers lie almost as bad as the politicians in this country.

Yes, I don't care if it's a $20,000 tube of mascara. No mascara is going to make your lashes look that good.

Get real .. if you are ugly, no amount of gook will fix it and only the stupid would go for it.

Using that logic, every ad should be banned. When I get my whooper, it's looking more like a flopper if you ask me.

It's only an ad. Not everyone would believe it is real or not. If they don't its real they wouldn't buy it simple as.

But it should have an exclaimer stating that it has been photoshop or have been done with extensions. They do that in the mascara commercials and ads here.

A person seeing that ad might assume that the mascara by itself would literally make their eyelashes voluminous like her and that wouldn't be the case.

mascara ad *This picture states her eyelashes were styled with inserts.

Yeah, I can see it in huge letters at the bottom right. Why don't they make that disclaimer as large as the word "Extravagantly" at the TOP of the page? They would lose sales, that's why.

No matter what anyone says, altering and Photoshopping . Pictures will always exist. Instead of getting mad at the unrealistic beauty on TV and magazines, why don't we all just keep in mind that its all fake

Same go for those packets of frozen or microwave meals, what you get NEVER resembles what's on the cover, unless it's already eaten once.

I think it's a tempest in a teapot. What irks me no end is all those "fat burner" pill commercials that lie through their teeth. According to these ads all you have to do is take one of these each day and you can eat whatever and however much you wish and the fat will magically disappear. Will someone tell me how they can get away with this BS?

Really? Ban a completely inoffensive ad because it doesn't do for everyone what four hours in a makeup chair with professional makeup artists will do? Come on. Everyone knows the picture ain't the product you get in reality. This just seems really moronic that there's a watchdog group for ads.

My feelings exactlly. If I could buy that mascara and look anything at all like Natalie Portman I'd be in line as we speak!! Ever notice how big and juicy and fresh a Whopper looks on television and when you get one it's flat and soggy and the veggies are wilted from the heat of the meat? This is how products are presented and this is why you'll never see Joan Rivers in a makeup ad! lol

Of course. What you see is NOT what you get--at least tv ads have gotten entertaining because I don't think most people really pay attention to them if they're not at least funny.

If the mascara is as good as they claim, why not just use the results of the mascara itself?

It's no different to an advert for a holiday showing someone else's hotel. If the product is truly good, why fake the results?

Same reason fast food looks better on tv than in reality--because the whole point is to SELL the product, be it mascara or hamburgers.
