Natalie Portman Names Her Child: Do You Approve?

You!

We're not surprised Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied gave their son a strange name, but this might be one of the more passable celebrity baby names.

Please welcome... baby Aleph!

There will probably be a lot of speculation over what the name means, but it almost certainly has something to do with Portman's heritage.

Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and since Portman lived in Israel for the first three years of her life, that throws a little light on the unique baby name. But it still contains a wealth of possibilities.

For starters, it could mean she's planning on having 22 kids -- one for each letter of the alphabet. It's the most obvious answer, but very nearly impossible. (We'll put that in the "maybe" pile.)

Aleph is also the Hebrew word for the number 1, and according to People magazine, that's significant in Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism. It apparently represents the "origin of the universe" and the "primordial one that contains all numbers."

Deep stuff, and exactly what we expected from Ms. Portman. But that does mean that the kid is going to live with the name "Aleph" for his entire life. That's pretty much Alf if you say it quick enough.

Three things wrong with this question. 1), It's her kid. She can name her kid whatever the hell she wants. 2), There are worse names out there. Blanket Jackson, anyone? At least this name has some meaning to it, and 3), Do you need the approval of random internet strangers to name your kids?

It's not my place to approve or disapprove. She and boyfriend, husband, whatever he is can name their baby Muffy the Wonder Squid. And I won't pass judgement.

I read once that, before you choose a name for you baby, you should go out in your front yard and yell the name up to what will be the child's bedroom window (like his/her friends will do in years to come). If it sounds stupid.....don't use it.

I believe a name must mean something. There is historical and Biblical references to how the name of the child became the child's life fulfillment. Aleph is pretty cool and means something.

My middle name is Snoopy. Yes, like the Peanuts beagle. My friends even called me Snoop Dogg at one point (though I don't have any resemblance to the rapper). It will be a fun story for her son to tell, and in any event it's her kid so we really don't have a right to say something about it. Especially with a name so non-offensive. Now if it was "F*ck" or something else completely absurd, you may have a point, but I really don't think Aleph is that bad.

I only said yes because there was not a "None of Our Business" option. Is it a silly name? Maybe. Will the kid get teased for it when he gets to school? Most likely. But, its her kid, and her choice. I don't really care.

What kind of insane conformist crap is it when someone is being judged for naming their child something besides John, William, Jennifer or Christine?

Aleph is the first letter of the Jewish Alphabet. It means the beginning or first. Nothing strange about her naming her son that.

Who are we to approve or disapprove? It is her child. When the baby is older, if he doesnt like his name, he can always change it. At least that is easy to do. The most important thing is that the baby is healthy and loved by his parents. Nothing else matters.
