Guys like GSP and Anderson Silva are far from overrated. Theyre champs for a reason and theyre the best in the sport. Some fighters however get too much credit or hype for whatever reason and they just don't deserve the praise. Who do you think fits this list. Here's mine:
1.) Kimbo Slice
It's obvious why Kimbo was overhyped. He was a youtube phenom. Even though Dana White was never a Kimbo fan and criticized him on a daily basis he put him as a contestant on TUF: Heavyweights knowing that he would draw attention. People immediately picked him to be the winner of the show, yet he was overmatched by Mr. Fitness Roy Nelson. He would later be dominated by Matt Mitrione in another UFC fight and would wind up being cut. Kimbo might of had knockout power and was extremely popular, but lacked technique to survive in the UFC.
2.) Brock Lesnar
Lesnar was dominant during his tenure in the UFC? Hello, he owned a 5-3 record. You call that dominant? Sure, he shocked everyone that he could do this when so many critics said he's a WWE wrestler, not an MMA fighter. I give him props for that. He beat Randy Couture once and Frank Mir once but Frank Mir was a grudge match. He was overmatched by Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem and he would later retire. Was Lesnar horrible, no. But dominant he wasn't.
3.) Jason "Mayhem" Miller
Whether it's Bully Beatdown, his energetic and funny personality or his dyed hair "Mayhem" has a huge fan base. He's a veteran who's been doing this for years. Many were extremely excited when Miller signed with the UFC and Coached TUF alongside Michael Bisping. They thought Miller could now show off his talents on the big stage and could become a top 10 middleweight. However Bisping dominated Miller during the Finale. If you look at Miller's record it's good, but he's made a living of dominating nobodies. The only three notable fighters he has defeated were Robbie Lawler, Kazushi Sakuraba and Tim Kennedy; and he was robbed of a decision against Jake Shields for the Strikeforce middleweight belt. But he looked awful against guys like Georges St. Pierre, Frank Trigg and Michael Bisping, both three are legitimate UFC fighters. It's easy why Mayhem comes off as likable, how could you not? But do you honestly think this guy is going to become a top 10 any time soon? Perhaps if he worries more about fighting than his image, but good luck.
4.) Roy Nelson
"Big Country" Nelson. Winner of TUF Heavyweights. Nelson is also a fan favorite because of his knockout of Kimbo Slice during the show, his aggressive style and is always praised for his toughness. The thing is though he's not a true heavyweight, and we've seen this in fights against Frank Mir and Junior Dos Santos. The guy is just plain fat not to be mean. Commentator Joe Rogan said he could easily cut down to light heavyweight or possibly even middleweight if he laid off the pizza and chips. Nelson is a solid fighter, but not a spectacular one and not what everyone makes him out to be. Not as a heavyweight at least.
5.) Jake Shields
After a bunch of Strikeforce belts and a win against Dan Henderson, Dana White thought Shields was the man to face Georges St. Pierre. Boy was he wrong. "Rush" dominated Shields for 5 rounds in that fight and Shields would later be knocked out by Jake Ellenberger in the first round in another fight. His wins against notable opponents though were all controversial. Both the Mayhem Miller and Dan Henderson fights could of gone either way, same with Martin Kampmann and Shield's recent win. If Shields can barely get through Mayhem for five rounds, what makes you think he can against GSP? And why he's still a top 5 welterweight is beyond me. Shields is solid, but boring and extremely overrated. Like Mayhem, Bully Beatdown made him famous.
6.) Chael Sonnen
Chael is known for two things. His fight against Anderson Silva and his big mouth. What people don't realize though is that Sonnen tested positive for steroids during the Silva fight. Other than that he's lost alot and to weaker competition. Demian Maia has beat him before and Jeremy Horn has twice or three times I believe. Even his last fight against Michael Bisping, he really didn't win that fight he was given a blessed decision. Chael is in for a rude awakening against Silva if that guy shows up in the ring again. He's in danger of making himself look like a fool which I think will happen. Sonnen can hype a fight better than anybody, but he is a bit overrated IMO.
7.) Chris Leben
Like Nelson, fans love Leben because of his toughness and personality. His only win of note though was knocking out Wanderlei Silva, anything to brag about? He's a solid fighter but one never to reach the top of the division. He's fun to watch, but that's about it.
8.) Tito Ortiz
Ortiz has been overrated for quite some time now. Even though he was the longest reigning light heavyweight champ, he can thank Chuck Liddell for protecting him from legit competition. Look where he's at now when MMA has emerged into something different. He's been overmatched by guys like Liddell and Rashad Evans, two of the best Light Heavyweights. Tito is a good promoter and was a star at his time and probably could make the UFC hall of fame, but he'll always be overrated in my eyes.
9.) Michael Bisping
Some say Bispings underrated, I say he's overrated. He deserves a title shot? Since when? Barely beating guys like Dan Miller and Matt Hamiil and having to do an illegal knee on Jorge Rivera? Lets see who he's lost to... Dan Henderson, Chael Sonnen, Rashad Evans and Wanderlei Silva. Three of those guys are legit contenders, and Wanderlei is washed up. If he can't get through Wanderlei, you really think he can beat up Anderson Silva? Give me a break.
that's my list... did I miss anyone?

I agree, I think Silva is going to give him the ass kicking that we all have been waiting for... I can't wait! This guy(chael) his no power at all, I saw the Bisping fight and dana gave it to chael. He(dana) wants Silva to lose so bad, you can see it in his face when he talks about it.reply -
didn't chael test positive for steroids in that fight and didn't silva have an injury? if the real anderson silva shows up and if chaels not juiced up i can't see him winning this... he's on the verge of embarrasing himself in front of brazil... in a way maybe he deserves it I've never heard trash talk like this before that Chael's doing to Silva.reply - bert NYYankees 2012/04/05 18:16:42
Me neither, boy is this guy asking for it! and you're right, Anderson was hurt in that fight, his rib or shoulder I don't remember, but he wasn't 100%. I know a lot of people that always want Anderson to unleash on his opponent, I think we're going to see that in this fight...can't wait!!reply - Bali bert 2012/04/08 17:03:16
who else has handled silva like he did though?reply -
nobody lol... demian maia went 5 rounds with him but it was still lopsided... that was the fight where anderson silva started dancing in the ring acting like a jackass. but looking at the bisping fight sonnen didnt look too good and he tested positive for steroids during the silva fight so if that guy in the bisping fight shows up again hes gonna get killed.reply - Bali NYYankees 2012/04/08 17:12:42
i think sonnen will show up ready for the silva fight. granted he is one strange cat with regard to his media antics....can you imagine trying to interview him? most of the pros have some strange characteristics however, i still like wanderlei silva, he was always cool pre fight and all business, no small talk needed,.reply -
wanderlei trashed talked bisping and sonnen before but then again they deserve it... and he did rampage once but thats because they hated each other since their pride days. wanderlei is only cool towards fans and media he seems like a nice guy outta the cage, but weigh ins and fights he seems like a merciless monster lol its just like where did that come from.reply - Bali NYYankees 2012/04/08 17:17:35
thats what i like about him....remember the soocer kick he applied to someones head a long time ago? another amazing fighter is ben henderson, pretty amazing contortionist as well.reply - bert Bali 2012/04/11 02:42:39
You're right, I agree that he handle Silva that day, but couldn't finish. It's well known that it's not how you start, but how you finish.... I think you'll get your money's worth this time around...reply - All American 2012/04/02 23:06:01Tito Ortiz+1You left out that Russian guy; he was that heavy weight who dominated overseas, but was a flop here. I see his face, but I can't think of his name off hand. He was a heavy kicker who could put people down by his kicks alone.reply
-
+1cro cop or fedor? theyre both overrated i forgot both of themreply - All Ame... NYYankees 2012/04/03 04:15:38
That's him, Cro Cop, he crushed people with his kick, but had little if any success here.reply - Bali All Ame... 2012/04/08 17:06:29
he wasn't russian, he was croatian......and his name was ummmmmmmm Mirko Crocop. the russian is fedor, and he is a badass but all used up at this point.reply - Javimendo 2012/04/02 22:49:34Brock Lesnar+1He can dish it but he can't take a punch. He quits when the pain begins - what an over-rated piece of loud pork.reply
-
+1i agree. we saw this in both the velasquez and overeem fights.reply - Javimendo NYYankees 2012/04/05 15:29:53
Exactly! His inner wimp was revealed.reply - Bali Javimendo 2012/04/08 17:07:01
+1nothing more than a brutereply - martin28 2012/03/27 07:08:46Kimbo Slice+1I think of all these guys kimbo and leben were overhyped. I hate to see that crap leben does when he's "knocked-out" how in the world do you keep fighting when your supposedly unconscious?reply
-
+1yeah kimbo was way overhyped. so many people thought he would win tuf and become a heavyweight champion he was a bust.. hes proof that a street fight is different from a cage fight. and yeah leben is a bit overhyped too. he's tough and shows alot of grittiness... but he's lost to michael bisping, anderson silva and mark munoz... these are all top 10 contenders. he's fun to watch ill give him that... but he's only a solid fighter nothing that special.reply - martin28 NYYankees 2012/04/05 17:19:38
I think Kimbo Slice's trump card was intimidation, he was portrayed as a human brute especially when he was getting punched in the face and screamed at the guy hit me. Fighting against trained fighters, you're not going to get the same level of intimidation, if at all.reply - Bali martin28 2012/04/08 17:07:40
leben is one hell of alot better than kimbo ever was.reply -
lol yes... but leben still isnt a contender in the division he's just entertaining and a fan favorite. he lost to anderson silva once, and he lost to mark munoz and michael bisping those are top 10 middleweights.reply - Bali NYYankees 2012/04/08 17:13:56
on that i agree, he does have a good chin and has come a long way from his UF debut but will never be a worldbeater.reply - martin28 Bali 2012/04/09 23:32:44
yeah that's true, I just hate that dazed fighting foolishness he does.reply
