'Modern Warfare 3' Is Quickest to Earn $1 Billion: Impressive or Expected?

"Skyrim" won all the big awards this year, but it's not winning in sales. Activision's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" didn't just become the quickest game to sell $1 billion -- it became the quickest entertainment product to reach that mark. According to Yahoo, the game pulled in a billion dollars within 16 days of its release. That's faster than "Avatar," which held the old record of 17 days.

But the signs were all there. "Modern Warfare 3" pulled in $400 million on the day of its release, and $775 million within five days. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said, "Call of Duty has become that rare entertainment franchise that transcends its own genre. Core gamers love it, as our stellar reviews show. But every year, new people are drawn into Call of Duty."

Why is this a big deal? It has more sales because video games are becoming more readily available and more aggressively marketed. Did you expect as many sales as the original Donkey Kong?

At $60 a game, digital distribution, and the proliferatino of the game on nearly every platform? Expected. But impressive also. I just recently bought MW2. I was dissapointed by how outrageously short the campaign was. MW3 may be the most bought, by skyrim is the most played because it has the most content. I'm very glad I didn't by MW2 at its peak cost, becaust after wrapping up the campaign in 5 hours, I'm now done with it and noone is playing multiplayer anymore. Back in the day I bought starcraft for 40 bucks, and it lasted me 10 years.

Just as Black Ops was the demise of MW2, MW3 is now the demise of Black Ops.
I don't have to deal with this long, (virtual) bloody feud,
Because you see,
I play Assassin's Creed.
So I kill my enemies with this thing called a hidden blade.(or a crossbow or gun, whatever. sheesh)

I, personally, haven't been a CoD fan since the second one.
All of them since MW have been fairly contrived, and cookie-cutter - providing just what people want in order to sell units, and not push boundaries.

What can I say.. not surprised....it's a twitch shooter. It's core demographic are young kids to young adults. Takes little skill but gives you your lovely fix of dopamine and is something to entertain you until the next copy of the same game comes out. Way to pull a Hollywood. I'd rate it a 6 out of 10 and that's me being generous.
