'Modern Family' Creator Steve Levitan Takes Shot at Ann Romney: Fair Game or Uncalled For?

The Republican National Convention is in full swing, and everyone watching waited in anticipation for Tuesday's critical speech by Ann Romney -- wife of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. She talked passionately about her respect for the moms in this country and “a love so deep only a mother can fathom it.”

jesse tyler ferguson

One day earlier, Mrs. Romney told “Entertainment Tonight” that her favorite TV show was “Modern Family.” The potential future first lady can clearly equate her life mothering five boys to the trials and tribulations of the Pritchard-Dunphy clan. But the comment had many wondering about the big, glaring, gay, white elephant in the room.

Since the show features two same-sex men in a relationship, raising a child, where does this show fit in to Romney’s belief system? Both she and her husband have repeatedly spoken out against gay marriage.

Creator and writer of “Modern Family,” Steve Levitan was happy to hear that he had such a high-profile fan, but could not let the issue slide. He tweeted, "Thrilled Ann Romney says ModFam is her favorite show. We'll offer her the role of officiant at Mitch & Cam's wedding. As soon as it's legal." What do you think: Was Levitan’s response to Ann Romney fair game or was it uncalled for?

Did you even read the joke? How was it insulting?

You may call it a joke, but the underlying point was understood by all. And yes DEAR, I read and understood it !
It was insulting because Mr. Levitan was taking aim at our future President's position on
same sex marriages and that , my dear, is insulting to his wife who really was trying to give a compliment to the show and in no way was her point political. Unfortunately all these California "cuties" can't wait to be rude to anyone who doesn't hold their point of view. Well, he didn't have the "last laugh" because we can and will vote by not watching the program.

Actually, don't watch the show and I'm heartily sick of having the gay.lesbian life-style shoved in our collective faces. I don't care what your life-style is, it's your choice.

Not being forced to live in the closet isn't shoving it in your face... why shouldn't gay people be allowed to see gay people on television?

Nobody ever suggested that. It's just that if gay couples do the same things as straight couples (hold hands in public, appear on t.v. shows, etc) it's suddenly a big to-do. It's not being forced on anyone. They're only doing the same thing for gays as they do for heterosexual people.

Jeez, can they just NOT bitch about everything on earth.

I understand that in a hollyweird persons mind, we should all just accept whatever THEY tell us is correct. BUT as long as we live in America, with an admitted 87% Christian populace, can they JUST let us alone???

How about you all pick on odammit for his debt, stupidity and epic failure of a presidency, cause we all know that had a repubs made things this much worse, we would hear abou tit 24/7/365.

87%... HA. Who are you kidding? That percentage was either manipulated into existence, or completely made up. There is no way 87% of the people in this country go to church and are god-fearing people. Good thing too.

Odammit. The name twisting gets funnier and funnier. I don't agree with everything you hae said, though: Obama is not stupid- that is an exaggeration. I think that his legal bakground has not been very complimentary to helping the economy. Its not a crime, though. I think he believes that what he is doing wil help the American people, but as Niall Ferguson correctly said in Newsweek recently, things like the ACA are likely to cost a lot more than forecast, and there is a lot of debt at present.
Remember that the Obama inherited the deficit from George Bush- it was under the latter that it ballooned because of his tax cuts. True, Obama has not made it worse- and even worse, Romney will have a hard job, if elected, of clearing it up.
Another point worth noting is that the Republicans have consistently been blocking many of Obama's proprosals, even ones that they would have traditionally favoured- such as lowering taxes. Its all in Michael Grunwalds new book about Obama's economic policies. Check it out.
This doesn't excuse Obama, mind. But he cannot be blamed entirely.

I hate questions with only two choices. My choice would have been NONE OF THE ABOVE

The guy was joking, stating his beliefs and did not attack Mrs. Romney for her beliefs. And she did not say that it changed her beliefs because she liked the show.

This whole question is a non issue made into a faux issue to get people bugged.

Although I would never support a show such as this because it sends a horrible message to my children(my opinion), Mrs Romney set herself up for this one. She had better get used to it too. All is fair in entertainment and politics.

Actually, most conservatives could care less whoma person loves, or shacks up with, we WOULD like to keep traditional marriage as just a man and a woman, but most of us think civil unions are fine.
Unlike DEMS, we could care less whom you love or screw, as long as they are of legal age and willing.

The civil contract would include all the benefits and legal obligations of marriage, but would be called something else, right?

So its only the title "marriage" to which you are objecting when two people of the same sex are involved?
  • Lanikai David 2012/08/30 18:25:28
    Lanikai
Yes, basically. Marriage has always been a union between one man and one woman. Let's leave that be. Civil unions would be fine for gays.

Although, I don't know why anyone would want to get married anymore. Obie tax scheme allows a PERSON making 250,000.00 to not have a tax increase, or a COUPLE making 250,000.00 to not have a tax increase,

There is no financial benefit to marriage.

I don't agree with you, as a Christian I am more conservative than you on this point.

I see this issue as one of immorality and fully support the Biblical position!

I don't care what you call a union between two gays it is a sin which will be ultimately punished by God!
  • Lanikai David 2012/08/30 20:35:57
    Lanikai
Well, I decided that I cannot STOP homosexuality. I cannot prevent it, or convince them to NOT be or do whatever. SO, I will fight to keep marriage between a man and a woman, but I will NOT worry over the gays having civil unions.

It became a matter of my best friend. he is gay, he loves his partner, they have been together for 15 years, they are deeply in love and they go to church, read their bibles, accept Jesus as Lord and proclaim him to all they know. I cannot judge them, I will not judge them and I am happy to let them be them.

My Christianity is my relationship with Jesus, and as an evangelical, I can consider it immoral, I can consider it against the teachings I believe, but I will not stand against them.

Funny isn't it? I just let them be.

"Funny isn't it? I just let them be"

Lenikai there is little I can do as America moves ever closer to Sodom and Gomorrah and I am glad that God is judge rather than I.

However, if you are living a life which God regards as sinful it matters not one iota how often one reads the Bible or attends church!

As Christians we will be judged by others as well as God, so if we tell the world that "we could[nt] care less whom you love or screw, as long as they are of legal age and willing.", we are antiChrist!

Christ cared, he told the woman taken in adultery after her accusers had left, "... go and sin no more"!

Christ is our example and as followers of Christ our lives should reflect his teachings and be an example to others.

I have a real problem with telling sinners we don't care about their immorality!

Our role as Christians is to help as many as possible find Christ and salvation rather than encouraging them to march to destruction!

If we don't care we should!
