'Modern Family' Creator Steve Levitan Takes Shot at Ann Romney: Fair Game or Uncalled For?

The Republican National Convention is in full swing, and everyone watching waited in anticipation for Tuesday's critical speech by Ann Romney -- wife of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. She talked passionately about her respect for the moms in this country and “a love so deep only a mother can fathom it.”

jesse tyler ferguson

One day earlier, Mrs. Romney told “Entertainment Tonight” that her favorite TV show was “Modern Family.” The potential future first lady can clearly equate her life mothering five boys to the trials and tribulations of the Pritchard-Dunphy clan. But the comment had many wondering about the big, glaring, gay, white elephant in the room.

Since the show features two same-sex men in a relationship, raising a child, where does this show fit in to Romney’s belief system? Both she and her husband have repeatedly spoken out against gay marriage.

Creator and writer of “Modern Family,” Steve Levitan was happy to hear that he had such a high-profile fan, but could not let the issue slide. He tweeted, "Thrilled Ann Romney says ModFam is her favorite show. We'll offer her the role of officiant at Mitch & Cam's wedding. As soon as it's legal." What do you think: Was Levitan’s response to Ann Romney fair game or was it uncalled for?

She and her husband don't believe gays should have equal rights. It is fair game and they should be ashamed of themselves for their selfish views.

Typical off the Romneys t make these kind of comments witthout actually thinking about them. I have nothing against Ann Romney, mind, but she doesn't seem to have any empathy with those who don't fit in her economic standing or with her beliefs.

I will not watch that piece of garbage show, never have, and never will. If I smell even a whiff of liberal bias and hate around the producers or the message they're forcing through on their programs, I avoid it like the plague of immorality that it is!

It surprises that she said it was one of her favorite programs to a point. But she was being honest. Steve Levitan should have just been happy for the comment and let it go! We know who's more gracious!

He wasn't even nasty, he just made a harmless joke. I'm willing to bet she's a lot less offended than the 41% who voted "uncalled for". She might even actually have a sense of humour and be able to laugh at herself!

Liking a show doesn't equate to agreeing with everything in it.

However, the quip by Levitan was harmless and good-natured. It could have been MUCH MUCH worse.

How can she say her favorite show is a show that includes a gay couple, when she and her husband are against gay marriage? Seems hypocritical, but kudos to the Modern Family writers for such a great comeback line

Not believing in gay marriage and accepting an alternative lifestyle are 2 different things. She didn't say she hates gays or that she doesn't approve of their relationships, she believes for religious reasons that marriage is between and man and a woman.

The gays are a SMALL part of the total show. It points up that conservatives can be discerning and don't swallow the whole package as a moonbat will do.

Some people will take a compliment meant with no ulterior motives.
Shame on everyone for thinking too deeply on something so simple.....she said she liked the show........ Some people aren't happy unless they can attack and be mean-spirited. Some tolerance.!!!

This is precisely what I feel. For example, she was asked very clearly on Fox News why she thought that the Democrats had more support amoung women, and all she seemed to parrot about was the economy. She didn't mention that it was because her husband and party were anti-abortion. She insisted that her and her husband wre very caring towards those in difficulty- but that is a hard statement to make, considering her husband has been quoted saying that he doesn't care about the very poor, because they have a safeety net, and that he likes firing people.
As you say, I am sure that she is an excellent mother and grandmother, I am sure that Romney is also an excellent father, but you are right about her lack of knowwledge.
