Mobile Gamers Now Outnumber PC Players in China: What's the Best Gaming Platform?

I grew up on gaming consoles through every iteration of Nintendo's and Sega's offerings. I had a Gameboy and Game Gear for family trips, car rides to school, hiding under my covers when I was supposed to be "in bed" -- and just about any other chance I could get to escape the parents.

I finally graduated to PC gaming, where there was a lot more opportunities for competition and earning cash from my efforts. I still own more recent consoles and handhelds, but my heart is still set on PC gaming. How about you? Are mobile devices pushing handheld gaming into the lead?

VENTUREBEAT.COM reports:The number of mobile gamers in China is expected to hit 192 million by the end of this year, according to market researcher Niko Partners. This means that the number of mobile gamers now likely exceeds the number of PC players in China.

Though I enjoy playing on consoles and my PC equally, I choose consoles simply because that option encompasses portable as well as home consoles AND there is much greater variety in console games as opposed to PC games in my experience. I'm a big fan of the traditional western RPG, which only works on the PC, and I prefer to play RTSs on PC as well, but I probably play my PS2 the most (because that's where my indecently large backlog haunts me from. My Wii, PS3 and 360 are collecting dust at the moment - poor darlings. I wouldn't be surprised if my 360 has red-ringed itself in a plea for attention).

Now, smartphone games are all very well and good when you've got only a couple of minutes to spare and want to play something a bit mindless but they don't compare to portable consoles; I don't go anywhere without my DS, 3DS, or PSP - unless I bring a book instead which takes up quite enough room in my bag already.

Of is truthfully the best for gaming. Console commands and mods make games much more fun to play. I do still enjoy my PS3 though.

Got and Xbox and a Laptop.

Prefer PC games by far...Xbox is a little too casual for me though I see why some like it. Too many attentionwhores and 9 year old kids running around on it now so I stick to PC games. As long as it isn't Runescape you're safe enough :P

Definitely tend to play a lot more on consoles because my current computer doesn't work well with gaming. I do really love to play RTS games on PCs and I can't wait till I can afford a new computer so I can get back to playing them!

This is purely a preference thing and it's not possible to say platform C, A, B is better than platform A, B or C... It all depends on the consumers' needs and expectations in said platform...

I really have no preference. The only reasons I picked PC is modding and the option for improving your hardware.

You can't really say best because each one fits different needs, while PC's are the best for up to date gaming, not everyone can constantly update their cards so if you just want to pick up and go without trying to figure out your configuration and if a game will play on your comp then go with a console; if you're on the road and you just want a quick game go with handheld.

not one is best over all but best suited for individual needs.

PC of course. There are far too many limitations for gaming when it comes to consoles and handheld devices. The technology of the Xbox and PS3 is now five years out of date. And as a result, this out of date tech is holding some parts of the industry back. However, PC remains on form as it always has. Better visuals, online gaming, community, support, etc. The superior platform is clear...

I think it depends on the gamer. I for instance don't give a *huge* damn about visuals (they're a bonus for me) and I don't bother with online capabilities - which throws 'community' and 'support' out the window. If harnessing the power of the newest technology is a very important thing to you then, yes, PC is the obvious choice, but I wouldn't say that alone makes it superior. Even mobile gaming has it's merits - not that I care for it, because it's not my style - but it does.

While I agree with you I also have to point out that not everyone can shell out the money to constantly update their PC's Graphics and sound cards, if most gamers are like me, they like to go all out so it runs smoothly.
if you just want to pick up a game and play then you want a console instead of constantly making sure the PC you have will meet your needs with the game.

I've played on each platform and have found the console to be most enjoyable. The others do have their advantages as well, but, overall, I would have to go with the console.

Chicks and kids play games on smartphones, not serious gamers! hhahaa. that oughta' spice up the conversation ;)

Real video games require real gaming machines -- platforms dedicated to games. PCs offer the most diverse array of gaming genres (strategy, shooter, sim, fantasy, fighting, puzzle, etc...), but sitting in a chair 2 feet from the screen diminishes the "fun aspect" of gaming. It makes gaming more like work.

A video game console offers a big screen, loud sounds, a comfy couch, an ergonomic controller, and same-room multi-player experience.

Me, I have my PC hooked up to my 72" HDTV and 5.1 surround system with a wireless mouse, keyboard and a Cideko Air Keyboard Conqueror. Haven't owned a console since I had a 3DO.
