Critics say Miley Cyrus is too young to be engaged at age 19, but not to worry: the ex-Disney star tells Marie Claire that she wants a "long engagement." Watch the video below to see what else she told the magazine.

"I don't really care about the wedding or the piece of paper as much as I do the promise we've made to each other. And we want to have a long engagement," she says of her 22-year-old fiance Liam Hemsworth in Marie Claire's September issue. She continues, "Life is too short not to be with the person you want to be with."

The couple already live together in an 8,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style villa -- and despite being young, they manage to keep jealousy in check. "Liam and I have a really good relationship … neither of us is super-jealous. We know each other and would never do anything to hurt each other," she says.

As for the engagement, she says it was a surprise, even though they'd "been kind of talking about it." Do you think a long engagement is a smart idea for Miley Cyrus? Or should they go ahead and make it official already?

Long engagements are good. You should know you're a good pair before actually getting it official. People are getting married after only knowing the person for like a year these days. Which is probably why divorce rates are high.

Personally I would not want a long engagement and I don't understand why so many people do, but to each their own.

I think it's a great idea because the relationship won't last and it's would be a shame for the pair to marry knowing there maybe a pending divorce so it's better for them to have a long engagement than a quick marriage.

You don't want to be engaged too long but you don't want to get married to young, you need a perfect balance.

Better to stay together engaged long enough to realize that you don't want it than to have rushed into it and find out 72 days later that you made a mistake.

I wish her all the luck in the world for marriage is a serious commitment and I wouldn't want her to fall into that large percentage of hollywood actors that get quicky divorces after a year.

Life can change when your married keeping the engagement long will just strengthen their relationship and give them time too really understand if they're willing to continue with it.

This way it saves the waste of time and cost in having the wedding when the engagement goes down the toilet in a month or two.

Absolutely. There is a such thing as too long of an engagement like 5 years that is way to long to be engaged, but 2 years is actual a very normal amount of time for being engaged.

I think long engagements are fine, young couples getting engaged are fine, and Miley and Liam, I like then together. But I think maybe they should wait before such a commitment is made.

That's exactly what people today need. Marriage is seen as a hop, skip, and a jump nowadays. People need to see if they can live together without being contractually bound before marrying.

it gives you time to think if marriage is what you really want. or you prepare yourself for your future with them. either way, i think long engagements are pretty smart.
