The 19-year-old former Disney princess is engaged to 22-year-old "Hunger Games" actor Liam Hemsworth, the couple confirms to People.com. "I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam," Cyrus tells the mag.

The Australian hunk popped the question on May 31 with a 3.5-carat diamond ring from jeweler Neil Lane, three years after he started dating Miley, People reports. The couple met on the set of "The Last Song" in 2009; at the time, Miley called Hemsworth her "first serious boyfriend." They've since broken up and gotten back together multiple times, according to reports.

Honestly, who cares? Love is love and marriage is just a piece of paper - people can get divorced anytime, and it's their business, so why should it matter? If getting married young is what makes someone happy then who are we to dictate what they can and cannot do with their lives?

It's not age, it's maturity. We got engaged at 15, married at 18, and celebrated our 33rd anniversary this year and are going strong. So no, not all who marry young get divorced.

Too bad everyone doesn't subscribe to the notion of waiting till around 25. That way you'd have sowed lots of wild oats, smelled most of the green grass on the other side of the fence, matured, pretty much know what you want, etc. But, heck, human beings are not robots and are not totally predictable. I thought the odds were against these 17-year-olds when they got married in the first place, but I was sure hoping they proved me wrong. But, alas, they didn't.

At least Miley and Liam are both adults. They also seem to have been together for a while, which doesn't really ring as impulsive. Although you do have to wonder: If they've been together for 3 years, he was 19 when she was 16, which isn't really legal so I can understand people getting upset over that.

I mean, how can you really complain when Chris Hemsworth's going to be your brother-in-law?

Not sure about in the USA, but here I think it's legal as long as they're not sleeping together. ( Well actually the age of consent is sixteen here, but that's not really the point)

In the US, it does depend on what state you are in, but at least in California, it's 18. I didn't think about the fact that he's Australian though, so it would really depend on where they were and whether or not they were sleeping together.

Wow, 17 is way too young, but I guess there are couples who have survived it, but not in the celebrity field. It seems it does not matter what your age is in that group, they are normally doomed before the knot is sealed. It is rare that one survives that crowd, young or old, but come to think of it, the Paul Newman and Joann Woodard marriage did.
