Ever since it was announced that Transformers 4
is a go, the question on everyone’s lips has been: Will Michael Bay be
back to direct? Well, there’s some good news, and some bad news. Bay
will return for the fourth installment, but then that’s it. He’s decided
to bow out gracefully and make way ‘for the next guy’, as he put it.

Whatever you think about the man and his unique style of direction, Transformers won’t be the same without him. The franchise has survived the loss of Megan Fox who was replaced with the equally eye-catching Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
but in losing Bay, the series will lose what really gave it its appeal:
huge set pieces, epic to the point of ridiculousness. The freeway chase
in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the meteor strikes, and any battles, period no one does blockbuster action like Michael Bay.

Does it really matter, though? With Shia LaBeouf’s decision
not to return for a fourth film, the entire original cast will be
replaced leaving not one shred of continuity. Well, executive producer Steven Spielberg is still around, and he’s a Bay fan:

I certainly can’t imagine anybody other than Michael being equipped
to make another Transformers. He’s invented a genre and he’s got the
secret formula.

So what will Bay do next? Right now he’s working on a bodybuilding crime story called Pain and Gain with The Rock and Mark Wahlberg. Then there’ll of course be Transformers 4, but after that it’s anybody’s guess. Rumor has it we might even be seeing Bad Boys 3 in the near future.
