Mark Zuckerberg Tells Eighth-Graders Not to Take Shortcuts: Ironic?

Mark Zuckerberg was just the name behind Facebook until "The Social Network" pinned him as a deceptive social misanthrope who used his genius to evolve an idea supposedly developed by someone else.

We'll probably never know exactly how true the accusations are, but it does put the 27-year-old's Belle Haven Community School speech, which he delivered to graduating eighth-graders on Wednesday, in an interesting light.

There's no shortcuts. Life is just like anything that’s really awesome -- [it] takes a lot of work and you just have to practice a lot and get there ... No one ever does anything alone... Great friendships are what make life fun and meaningful and it also enables you to do awesome things.

If that's how the rest of his speech went, we're guessing the number of graduates zoning out with their Facebook apps is pretty ironic, too.

(Seriously, how many times can a genius use the word "awesome" and get away with it?)

It is not ironic or hypocritical, what are the odds that any of those kids will be as lucky as Mark was. He is doing the students a favor. You have to work hard to succeed. I believe this is what these kids lack, a work ethic. Look Kobe Bryant has a lot of raw talent, but he still works harder than any one else. He wants to continue to be prolific shooter so he keeps taking shot after shot after shot.

He'd know better NOT to use them as he now has to keep going back and fixing the times he has done it.

I don't what he did in Harvard when he created facebook. But I find it quite ridiculous that everyone is using the fictional movie "The Social Network" to prove their point. That's like me asking if vampires are real and people saying "Of course, didn't you see Edward and his family on 'Twilight'?" AND regardless of whether he did in fact 'steal' the idea, he did a hell of a lot of hard work that the majority of people can't do if they had a step by step instruction book in front of them. Also, FB pisses me off. To contact someone if you have an actual problem is a process that takes forever to weed through all of their faqs and pages that are set up so that people won't contact anyone and will just get their answers, if they are there, from the faqs sections. And when you finally, finally get to the holy grail which is the contact page, they don't ever respond. Not even a form letter to say, we got it, we'll look into it. NOTHING. So I posted my issue on Mark Zuckerburg's discussions page. It will likely be deleted because I put a link to the pedophile that is contacting my 13 yr old daughter via FB, but it will be seen and maybe (hopefully) something will be done about it.

Well, the shortcuts on the facebook up certainly do not work.

How about they get on that?

(No, I didn't even read this article because I don't give two sh*ts about facebook.)

Ironic beyond comprehension. Quote is from Wikipedia: "According to The Harvard Crimson, the site was comparable to Hot or Not, and "used photos compiled from the online facebooks of nine houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the 'hotter' person".

To accomplish this, Zuckerberg hacked into the protected areas of Harvard's computer network and copied the houses' private dormitory ID images."

He used those STOLEN pix to bolster his early membership rolls (without anyone's permission or cooperation). If that wasn't a shortcut, I don't know what is.

I mean, surely we all realize that "The Social Network" is a fictionalized account of what happened. Before Zuckerberg could have created something like Facebook, he had to have the actual phenomenal programming skills to do it. The fact that he was a prodigy and gained those skills at a very young age doesn't mean that he didn't work hard and put in a lot of hours learning to do what he can do.

Its not ironic its just disgusting. All he did was make a dumbed down social website that a grandma could use. Then he sells the info people post online to companies. He's a hack and a sharlaton.

I had to attach to someone elses comment. Couldn't vote because I don't know anything about him, so I will say.. attach elses comment . I made an account on facebook about 8 months ago just to talk with my family. I have not been able to get on there yet. Everytime I try to sign in, it wants my cell phone number or a credit card number, and they aren't getting either one, so I guess no facebook for me. No big deal.

This guy worked his ass off...what shortcuts are you insinuating that he did? As for saying the word "awesome", well he was talking to 8th graders and that's the language they understand...

Well it's debatable if facebook was even his original idea. If it's wasn't his alone, and it is borrowed, I'd call that cheating.

You're right it is debatable, but he put in the hours upon hours of making it work...the twin brothers seem to me, trying to horn in after something has been successful and trying to get an undeserved chunk of change.....

Yes, that is hard work, no doubt about it, but if it isn't strictly your work and idea, and yours alone, you took a shortcut.

It seems that this article is suggesting that it is ironic because Zuckerburg himself took a shortcut. I don't think thats true. Even if he did 'steal' the idea for Facebook, I don't think that means he took a shortcut? I don't think that thinking of an idea is the majority of the work. Even the movie, which questions Zuckerburg's work ethic depicts him as someone endlessly devoted to working on and developing facebook. I don't think he took a shortcut.
