Mariah Carey Joins 'American Idol': Will She Save the Show?

Mariah is on fire ... at least as far as "American Idol" is concerned. The pop diva will join "Idol" as a judge next season, Fox announced Monday. Wait for the :15 mark in the video below to see what Mariah had to say on Twitter!



"I am so excited to be joining ‘Idol,'" said Carey, addressing the Television Critics Association, according to The Associated Press. "I can’t wait to get started in the fall ... and I will see you in January." Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler recently announced that they would not be returning for season 12, leaving two judge spots open.

The departures come as "Idol" is struggling a bit: While it was still the top-rated entertainment show last season, the finale was the least-watched ever, and young adult viewers seem to be departing in favor of newer shows like "the Voice."

So who will fill the other two spots? It's still not clear if Randy Jackson is returning (we think he will). As for the other "new" spot, Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly said it could be star or someone like music executive and "Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine, according to the AP. Mariah will reportedly earn at least $15 million a season. Can she save the show?

    I like Mariah but...when is this show gonna end? I couldn't even tell you who the last few winners were. And the only winners that I hear about are Carrie Underwood, Keli Clarkson and Daughtry..but he didn't even win! lol

    Possibly. If Mariah is honest as a judge and gives balanced judging (something that was REALLY MISSING BIG TIME last year) than she could help save the judging panel which will help save Idol for at least another year. If the other judge(s) that come to replace the leaving are equally good than they fix Idol's third biggest problem from last season. Idol's second biggest problem last year was it's format. It's biggest problem though was who won. In American Idol's most talented season ever another white guy with a guitar won who didn't have enough talent to deserve to gaze upon the much more talented other eleven contestants let alone beat them to win. Him being able to win was a format problem because if the show emphasized honest music critiques than he'd have been exposed as being very good. So American Idol if it's gonna survive much longer needs a lot of tweaks and improvements. The judging panel is a start.

    It's probleme is that it is drgged out over a long time and people are so busy they don't have the time or patience to keep up with it. I record but I don't get to vote if I record.

    I'm not convinced that she'll "SAVE" the show so much as perhaps revitalize the dwindling interest in the show. I believe she'll bring a new and fresh perspective to the judge's panel, not to mention additional viewers.

    It's a well-known fact that A.I. has been slipping in its' ratings since shortly before Simon Cowell's departure. While Cowell's personal opinion & feedback was often controversial, it was also brutally honest and in-your-face critcism which is absolutely necessary if the contestants are seriously considering a career in the music entertainment industry.

    With regards to Steven & J-Lo, it was about time they both left the show. J-Lo was oftentimes kind and 'maternal' in her encouraging and positive feedback (which is what us Latina women are good at doing). Now, while I personally appreciate Steven Tyler and his music, he was a verrrrrry poor judge, often at a loss for any constructive feedback at all!! I'm glad he's gone. I just know we gotta keep the DAWG in the house!!

    I would not have noticed if she came on board since I do not watch the show. This is so unimportant and watching so many wannabe singers make fools of themselves and being made fun off is painful.

    With any luck, she will be the coup de grace and we can be done with this show. Not against talent showcases, just tired of this one. Send this TV horse to the glue factory!

    I'm not sure it can be saved, but more because of a glut of music based TV competition shows, and it's age. All the same, I'm looking forward to another season, and hope that Mariah does well. I've only heard her sing, and don't know much about her personality, or stage presence. Hey....isn't her husband the host of America's Got Talent?

    She'll boost rating temporarily. And the sponsors will be more wiling to pay out the big bucks because of that.

    The only people who become more famous and more rich from that show anymore are the judges.

    She can help, but no one person is the answer. Reality programs are focusing too much on judges and their influence on contestants. There talent should be evaluated more objectively and upon their ability.

    No people are getting tired of reality shows and getting tired of so many music shows. AI was the only music show for some time but in the last few years you have added x factor, the voice and others and i think people are just tired of it. AI has been going down each year in the ratings.

    Yes, I believe that Mariah can prop up Idol for maybe a little while; depending of course she can maintain some heat for the program and not slack off. They are paying her quite handsomely for this position, so only time will tell. The ratings for Idol have dropped considerably and the producers needed some new blood to pump some life back into the program.

    My prediction is they'll go through many more celebrities in hopes to keep it alive but without success. The show will end. It'll be yesterday news soon enough.

    I think her presence will have an inspiring impact on the (female) contestants - if not anything else. Mariah Carey is the primary role model for young female Pop vocalists who aspire to have the BIG voice; even more-so than Celene Dion and Christina Aguilera.

    All shows have a life span. When you start tweaking them, to imitate a more successful show, you loose the audience that you still have.

    Nope, Idol will take her down like it was Glitter part 2. Look what it did for Steven Tyler, what an embarrassment. The simple truth is that music isn't a competition, it is art, talent, taste or lack of it.
