America was shocked when they learned that Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o's recently deceased girlfriend was in fact a hoax. Now, he's opened up about the whole affair to Katie Couric.

In the interview, set to air on Thursday, Te'o told Couric that he found out that he had been misled when he received a phone call from someone claiming to be his social media girlfriend Lennay Kekua on December 6th, months after she was meant to have succumbed to Leukemia.

When Couric said ""You stuck to the script. And you knew that something was amiss, Manti," he replied "Correct... put yourself in my situation ... This girl who I committed myself to died on Sept. 12. "Now I get a phone call on Dec 6. saying she's alive, and that I'm going to be on national TV two days later, and they ask me about the same question. What would you do?"

His father Brian, who appeared alongside Manti along with his mother, Ottilia, said "I've known him 21 years of his life. And he's not a liar. He's a kid." Do you sympathize with Manti Te'o?

Absolutely. He's human and he's young. Clearly these "catfish" situations happen a lot and relationships on the internet can be intense. I mean Christ, look around here at all the emotion tossed around by physical strangers. We grow to dislike or backslap familiar avatars daily. Thats just as useful as getting caught up in an internet relationship or addicted to WOW.

Now add to that national attention. You're a young kid doing something stupid (like thats never been done before) and bam it turns out you've been massively lied to after having your heart broken AND you've got people sticking cameras and microphones in your face about it?

I do feel bad for the kid because he is just a kid. This isn't some cold and calculated Lance Armstrong stuff here. This isn't some adult whos using lawyers to ruin peoples lives. This is a kid that has the rest of his life in front of him and got emotionally caught up in something stupid. Then boom, it blows up and you're hit with a flood of different emotions at once. Anger, betrayal, heartbreak, embarassment.

And outside of your own issues to deal with you've got a bunch of tools (see below) on the internet who don't know you who have their own failings making themselves feel better by belittling you.

Thing is T'eo will move on...

Thing is T'eo will move on. He'll get drafted and play hard and likely meet a nice girl and start a beutiful family and have a good career. This will pass away.

Trolls on the internet dissatisfied with their own lives will still be trolls.

After watching the Katie Couric interview... I am doubtful. and guessing perhaps the hold thing was a planned maybe by his buddy..why would a straight buddy spends hours on the phone with him... unless they just let the phone lay there.. and not actually talking..... "oh poor me" plot to win... I think the whole thing was a joke.. don you? Ya' think...Hello! He played the "dumb" card.. pretty well.. didn't he.

All right.. I am just going to go with it......

All- which are about 2- maybe 3 gay friends I have (come-on guys I live in Vegas) had their Gaydar up a long time ago.
And it is more sad than anything...
He was teased, as he said, many times for no girlfriend- and preasured by his family.
    What to do?
Make-up a girl- and deny who you are?
    Then she dies....
Well- there are are hundreds of years of history for that...

ANYWAY- I LOVE THE IRISH- WHAT A GREAT YEAR!!!
And this is just plain stupid...

Me niether. This kid might be skilled at football, but he has the IQ of a turnip.

Lets see.. he falls in "love" with a "girl" he never met in person. He gets duped into thinking he/she loves him. He falls for his/her faked death, likely arranged by another boyfriend or even more funny was the boyfriend pretending to be the girlfriend. He then finds out, continues to lie to cover his own worthless ass, then tries to play the role of victim to try to salvage his now sinking career.

Yeah, a real upstanding player to admire. Hell no! Go away fool. Sorry, Manti Te'o, you are just a Grade A putz, liar and damn fool. Any team that picks you for anything beyond water boy or jock strap clearer are just as ignorant and gullible as you are.

I cannot even work up as much emotion as you have. Skilled football player, will be first round draft pick and will make millions - why on earth does anyone care about his personal life as long as he is not violating some law? Waste of time

I don't care. That's the point. Must have started on a slow news day. None of the story adds up. A guy that's high ranking in the upcoming NFL draft can't find a LIVE girl friend on campus at some Ivy league school filled with hot babies many no doubt willing to hook-up just to move up the social ladder so he falls for some picture and has a PHONE affair then gets dupped in her "dying", finds out its probably a hoax and then himself keeps it going? You kidding?

It was a cruel and rotten thing to do none the less.It should be a crime.

These things happen all the time. After all, it wasn't like he just looked at someone's profile on a website and assumed they were telling the truth about their gender. He even got phone calls and heard a woman's voice, not a man's. Even if you still think he's stupid, the prank wasn't funny and it has to be pretty embarrassing for the whole world to know about it.
