Count Madonna among the many people outraged over Russian punk band Pussy Riot's conviction on hooliganism charges. After three members of the feminist group were sentenced to two years in prison last Friday for performing a "punk prayer" in a Russian cathedral protesting Russian President Vladimir Putin, Madonna issued a statement slamming the conviction, according to The Huffington Post.

Madonna

"I protest the conviction and sentencing of Pussy Riot to a penal colony for two years for a 40 second performance extolling their political opinions. Even if one disagrees with the location or how they chose to express themselves, the sentence is too harsh and in fact is inhumane. I call on all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment. I urge artists around the world to speak up in protest against this travesty. They've spent enough time in jail. I call on ALL of Russia to let Pussy Riot go free."

Meanwhile, Russian police are searching for more members of Pussy Riot, a police spokeswoman said, according to The Guardian. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, have already been in jail for five months. Will you join Madonna in supporting Pussy Riot?

    First, whom are we who are not Russian to dictate that the Russian Laws are unjust. Just how many of our US laws are seen as being unjust in the eyes of other countries. We as Americans hate when other countries step on our feet over our laws, yet here we are asking to step on the feet of another country.

    Looks like communism is still alive and well in Russia. You dare speak out against ANYTHING to do with their country and you get put in the slammer or worse.

    Well it sure has nothing to do with God in that country. For a long time it was an atheistic country. So they believe that THEY are the divine ones and that THEY were guided by some force or other. Somehow I doubt that since they always treated their people like crap. I don't see a divine being allowing a country to treat their people this way. If that's what divine is I want no part of them or anybody like them. At least here we can say something wherever in our country about the government without getting thrown in jail for it. Granted some of it is in bad taste, they could have protested elsewhere instead of where they did, but it was no reason to put them in a form of prison.

    Doesn't change the fact that they were arrogant control freaks and manipulators. What a wonderful legacy to pass on to THEIR kids.

    Actually I'm a good person and always have been. I've made mistakes, but I learned from them. My parents are very proud of me. I've overcome alot of obstacles to be where I am now. And it wasn't by manipulation and control, it was hard work. I was just kidding.

    I have done many things in my life that I'm not particularly proud of, but not trying has never been one of them. We are in the same boat and I'm certain my grand parents would appreciate me bringing you along to dinner. I'll wash and you dry. -:)

    It took me a little while to learn to loosen up. The other day while trying to get a medical OK for service, I found myself caught within the paperwork gears of approvals and refferals. While standing in front of the problem, I went from trying my darnedest to withhold a laugh, which just makes it worse, to almost spiting. She said what's wrong and I said well that's why I'm here, isn't it? She laughed, also, and stopped being the problem. I still don't know why that answer was funny; it isn't now, but it was then. -:)

    In my view they should have carried out the protest on public right of ways out side, I would be more ap to defend the rights if this was in say a public meeting to rebuke a view then settled down and let the matter carry on... I don't agree with sending them to jail for two years.. no one was hurt..!

    Two years in a work camp is FAR too harsh, they are not allowed to wear warm clothes, no pants, only a skirt, they live in military-style dorms with 100 other women many of whom are violent criminals.
    The violent inmates will probably make their lives VERY miserable;
    This is outrageous.

    I agree. I think it's just another way of manipulation and control which the Russian government is notorious for. I'm just glad I don't live there. I agree that this punk group can be a little childish in some ways with flipping the bird at people and such, but it still was too harsh of a punishment. I definitely agree on that one. That sentence should have been reserved for true criminals.

    Russia will never listen to the rest of the world. They'll probably have the Russian mob kill the band members just to smile and deliver a big middle finger to the rest of the world. That's the price of recognizing sovereignty.
